Awesome. So good to see young people on the bus. I found the Dead at age 14. 1st show was MSG 09/04/79. Tiger and Brent were brand new. I just missed Keith and Donna.
Skyler, id love to learn more about what the process of creating that cool cabinet/circuitry Frankenstein you made with the 12 inch speaker! I have a mustang lt 25 and would love to do this
Skyler can you please do a video showing your settings for the presets? I have a fender mustang LT25 and could really use some help getting the settings down. Really enjoy your vids man!
Oh my boy!!!....been watching The Grateful Dead Movie and listening to One From The Vault huh??.....gettin' stuck in the 'ol Wall Of Sound '74 era...good......we're proud of 'ya Sky👍......do you prefer "The Wolf" over "Alligator" ???.....
Great tones! Had a quick question on the Strat. You mention you installed a Jimi Hendrix style pickguard. What is that exactly as haven't heard of that before and Google not yielding much. Thanks!
It’s just a strat pickgaurd with the bridge pickup angled the other direction. Since Jimi played a strat upside down, the bridge pickup was flipped. But he also played with the strings reversed, so the lower strings were being picked up closer to the bridge. This gets more high end on them, and makes the higher strings have more midrange.
Sounds great, man! Like everyone has said here, I think a nice little tube amp will automatically make things better on top of how nice it is already. That said, I feel like you have really nailed the tones, man. Id love for you to do a deeper dive into the various pickup selections jerry used for certain songs and things like that. I'm about to get myself an Eastwood Wolf for christmas lol. How has it been in terms of build quality and things like that now that you've had it for a little while? It seems like it is a step up from the Phred Wolph (which has like a two year wait list at this point anyway lol), which seems right up my alley. It's nice that there is a nice mid-level Wolf guitar readily available for purchase. Was it setup well right out of the box? It would be cool to see a dedicated video for that guitar, imo. I dig it, man!
Yeah man it’s been great- I have both the Eastwood Wolf and a Phred Dockstar to get some Jerry and Some Trey. I think Wolf’s definitely the more trebley of the two, and can be a lot more powerful with the gain boost that’s in it. Out of the box it played pretty well, but I guess I’ve been tweaking it over the past couple years I’ve had it. The only real “mods” I’ve done to it have been raising the pole pieces of the humbuckers so they’re just poking out of the pickup by a couple millimeters, I flipped the humbuckers 180° because I think I saw that’s how Jerry had them (at least for a little while in the 80s), and I turned the gain boost down to better match the Phred and not have to change amp settings every time I switched guitars. Overall it’s been perfect for what I need and I think it’s a great little guitar with all you can get out of it. I would highly recommend!
@@skylerrobinson4182 awesome dude! I initially looked at the Phred Wolph but they are ALWAYS backordered for years and I just can’t wait any longer. Wolf is my absolute favorite of the Garcia guitars and I have been wanting something like it for years, but the only options I found (until recently) were for the Phred version at like $900 plus a 1-2 year wait, and then the only other Wolf model guitar makers would have them for like $3000+, so I didn’t even know there was a middle ground option like the Eastwood until about a week ago. The Eastwood will be my first guitar with a middle position humbucker which is probably one of the things I’m looking forward to the most. Can’t wait to crank up my amp and see how she sings! I find Trey’s tone to be literally perfect in every single way for that four-piece band lineup. Such a thick and super mid-heavy sound, yet still incredibly articulate and punchy. I personally have a PRS SE Hollowbody II that I use for all my Trey needs, and that guitar has made me fall in love with hollowbody electrics in general. I’ve had semi-hollows that I have liked before, but a fully hollow electric guitar is a different animal and absolutely incredible to play. It feels like playing an “alive” instrument, imo lol. You can feel every vibration through the body, plus the ability to easily conjure up useful feedback is really cool too in some cases. But yeah man, Trey and Jerry easily have/had some of my absolute favorite guitar tones ever. Both were super unique too to the point where you really can’t get very close to replicating their sounds unless you do have the distinct features of those two guitars. You won’t sound very much like Jerry without using some middle position pickups, preamp and coil taps, and you won’t get very close to Trey without a hollowbody and a tube screamer. Just totally perfect tones for their respective bands.
what do ANSJERR, FUZJERR, WHAJERR, HORNJERR, ECOJERR, SPCJERR, and ACUJERR short for? Fuzz and WHA (Wah pedal?) i can figure out, but what are ANS, HORN, ECO, SPC, and ACU?
I guess ANS is because it was the base sound for trying to replicate his tones of the 80s and 90s- my ANSwer to trying to find a good Jerry tone on my amp. HORN is to replicate the midi horn sound Jerry would use in the later years (on Built to Last in 89 with Wolf, then Rosebud and his Cripe guitars in the 90s). ECO is for the delay pedal he would use on songs like Stella Blue. SPC is the octave effect he would turn on during space, or sometimes the ending of Terrapin Station. And finally, ACU is for the really thin, piezo-acoustic sound of his rig in the 90s (think Lazy River Road and So Many Roads). Thanks 😊
@@skylerrobinson4182 very cool! i have an alligator setting that i wanna run past you, lemme know if it's good! i know you changed your speaker so it'll sound a little different, but here are my settings. Twin clean amp, no mods no delays. on stompbox i got an overdrive with my level on 4 and gain on 4, low on 1, mid 4.5, and high on 10. i have this here because i think it gives it that JBL sound. i also have a reverb spring 65 on with it's level on 6, decay on 2.2, and tone on 9.5
Look, kid, as Brent Mydland was told in the mid-70s, you can either get serious and practice, and get really tight, or you can just fuck around, and you will end up sounding like the Grateful Dead........
I think I’d totally get the Eastwood again because it can get me to a lot more places tonally than a strat. But a strat might also be the more budget-friendly option.
This is SO cool to see a youngster keeping the dream alive. I saw Jerry live and it was like seeing Santa!

Yep I always smile when I see a younger person getting into the deads music..
Me too!!!! My first was in 79...at the Philadelphia Spectrum!! I was in my first year of highschool....and have been dancing ever since!
Also, you NAILED the Jerry tone, which always makes me smile. It's such a happy tone.
Keep it up young man and we will all be buying tickets at your concerts. Bravo! Keep on pickin.

What you got dialed in there is pretty Jerry-esque. Good job.
A fine demo and fantastic playing! I have the same guitar as you, but the same playing skill LOL. Great discussion and presentation. Cheers!
Nice playing. You have the spirit. Meaning you get it.
What are your thoughts on the Eastwood Wolf? Would you recommend?
Love 💚 it Skyler! Your playing sounds really good. Jerry would dig you! ✌
Pretty enjoyable video! I was about your age when i found the Dead. I'm 48 now

Me too!
Jerry would approve!
Nice playing
Nice rig man, pretty creative with that dumpster find!

I think wolf for sure- lots more craftsmanship and development put into that guitar
I'd like to see the setting you're using on the mustang for the Jerry sounds. Could you show the effects on Fender Tone for me?
agreed
Dude your awesome! Great job! Very helpful! Thanks!
Sounds great young man! Keep on, brother.
I play an Eastwood Wolf and I couldn't ask for a better jerry rig.
‘73 Eyes feel, carry on young fella!
Man what amps and effects did you use and save in the Mustang? I have the same amp at home for practice etc, and would love to set nine up this way.
Any chance you could upload some of your presets? Would love to download on my Fender Mustang. Thanks

Ahhh! Makes sense and thank you!@@skylerrobinson4182
Great video, thanks! How do you like your Eastwood Wolf? 4:14
It’s real fun, definitely opened up a whole world of more pickup and tone control to me.
Rumble young man rumble! Nice rig
Damn, that's a cool rig.
Good stuff brother ❤️🤍💙
Keep on rockin man!

It’s been great- I haven’t played anything else to compare though. But it sounds like Jerry just plugging it into the amp

I know this is an old vid, but how did you get the wah tone around 10:20
Q Tron
He’s using the fender mustang built in envelope
It ain’t the rig it’s the player
Jerry was all ada .....so buy a cheap multi affects peddle and you'll hit it
Why is Trey number 1?? LOL
It just worked out like that, too much work to rearrange 😅
