MAKING a Couch Protecting Cat Scratcher | Peaceful Woodworking

- This cat scratcher is custom made to protect the corner of a client's couch.
When making cat furniture, I find it's important to think through all the mischievous things they could possibly do. With this cat being a Maine Coon (quite a large species!), I knew this cat scratcher needed to be able to hold up against that weight and power.
This cat scratcher is made with African Mahogany and features natural sisal - which should be able to hold up against the scratching for a long time. The sisal portion is replaceable so if it ever needs to be replaced, I will simply send her a new one and she can swap it out :-)
On the back, I created big adjustable knobs to get it to tighten against the bottom of the couch, giving it a bit more strength and oomph to withstand the scratching.

Unintentionally ASMR'd by the soothing piano and smooth joinery. Well done.
Thanks, Joseph! Glad you appreciated the peacefulness! :-)
Great Video. You are right, it is peaceful to watch your calm, contemplative style of work. Mine is a little more harried and panic mode, especially during glue up. Looking forward to more of your content. Thank you.
Thank you! Admittedly, my glue ups many times FEELS like panic mode - I think it just doesn't show that well, lol. Plus, major kudos to my partner for not trying to capture that panic in the shots 🤣
Any tips on half laps? You got that half lapped tab thingy dialed in perfect! (Around the 8:50 mark)
My tip for getting a perfect half lap joint is to test it out with a scrap piece similar to the actual piece ^_^ Lemme know if you have any more questions!
Very nice scratcher. One of my cats will get the sisal done in 3 months LOL - BTW, what do you do with all the small pieces and cuts at the end ? Once I heard some companies take those pieces and reuse them somehow.
🤣🤣🤣 3 months! That’s crazy lol. That’s also why I made this sisal portion replaceable :-) The extras I keep for random things - for building, tests, support pieces, and so much more :-)
