- Volume 2 of the Japanese manga adaption of H.G. Wells' classic novel, "War of the Worlds" has been released, and I had to share my love for my favorite scene, Thunder Child vs the Martian Tripods, featuring the Royal Navy Iron Clad itself and its heroic sacrifice battling against the Martian tripods. I am translating this manga myself (only the script) as a fan and encourage others to support the official release as both volumes can be bought overseas from Amazon JP. Note: I am not the author, but I love this series. I highly recommend it.

oh my God! what does this,,,say need for world war of the worlds!!!!!
@@TayoEXEComing back to this two years later, I’m now noticing that there’s a slight missed opportunity in the audio video, to be similar to the live show. At 2:52, the sound of the cannons firing almost aligned perfectly with the song in the live performance. If the audio of the cannon firing happened after the line: “Cannons blazing as she came” it would have been perfect. And the timing between each sound, there’s a slight pause.
But that’s just me.
The captain in this manga is basically how I imagined the captain of the Thunderchild. EVen as he chokes on black smog hes determined to keep fighting to his dying breath like the old veteran he is.
Yeah, I love that it shows the crew. Even when they can't see anymore, they keep going, knowing it's their death sentence. A major last hurrah for humanity in the original story before the Martians take over for the second half.
"Lets show these Alien bastards, lads. All ahead, Flanking Speed"
@@TayoEXE the thunderchild was such a tough ship. In comparison to the modern adaptation, where our technoligy is more advanced and we didn't stand a chance, the thunderchild managed to down two tripods.
I always fully believed that the captain and crew of the Thunderchild knew they were going to their deaths in a fight they couldn't win, but they went in anyway, full steam and cannons blazing to the end. They were sailors of the Royal Navy and they had a duty to do and went down swinging
Actually the black smoke shell bounced off of the ship's hull and the crew was just barelly exposed to it.
Crazy that I had to wait for a 70s prog rock opera to be paired with a manga to finally get the most faithful adaptation of the War of the Worlds.
If not the most faithful story wise, it sure puts me in the atmosphere that I think the novel was going for. Victorian England setting, humanity's ignorance and apathy until the tripods are immediately a threat, humanity's fight back but downfall, the beautiful and horrifying scenery of the red weed, the overwhelming terror and craze the event causes on people's psyche, and the breath of relief in the end with a cautious warning of it not being the end.
No force fields. Less curb stomps on humanity. Humanity stretched and tested. And a sense of wonder and mystery as well as that "cool" factor that I can't really explain.
Actually in 2005 a movie which was a direct adaptation of the book was released on dvd I’ve watched it and owned it it was great

Oh, you mean the Alvim Corrêa illustrations where the tripods look kind of like water towers? Someone did make a video/game demo in the style I believe! Look up "War of the Worlds 1913 - Short & Very Stylish Video Game Remake of H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds!" here on UA-cam. :)
I’d prefer that with Drach’s interpretation of her
Aliens: Invade earth

OMG, the interpretation of the scene is awesome
Thank you. ^_^ This is how it played out in my head while reading it.
Damn this manga looks legit, great visuals of the tripods dominating London, that’s the vibe it’s gotta be, an unstoppable slaughter of humanity and a fight for survival, that’s The War of the Worlds, if any adaptation nails that vibe, it’s a good adaptation in my book.
Tripods here kinda look like the BBC miniseries ones, how the legs look and how the Black Smoke is dispensed and such.
It's somewhat short at 3 volumes, but it is pretty faithful to the original novel! This is my favorite scene from the original story, so I felt these two adaptations did it a lot more justice. This is the scene of humanity losing the war, but man, going out with a bang. It's epic. Never thought a boat could be so epic. Haha It's way cool because it incorporates the Martian flying machines toward the end as they can dispense the Fighting Machines (the Tripods) (really cool scene at the end of one opening up and dropping a tripod as it falls out and lands and makes a big crash). The feeling I got from these Tripods design was to look "other-wordly" and more "organic." The author is a big fan of the original novel, so he along with the artist only took a few liberties to fit better for manga and to give his own interpretation as to how these Tripods and other Martian machines would look if they came from another planet.
...when the manga does it better than the official BBC adaptation. ¬¬
Yeah, I've heard the BBC version misses the mark in a lot of areas unfortunately. I look forward to them releasing volume 3 of the manga eventually! My guess is that it will have 4 volumes in total. Not a bad length for an adaptation.
Yeah BBC adaptation was rubbish
All we want is a proper film based on the book
How hard can it be?
@@seanjames5930 most likely animating in cgi the Thunderchild. I’d like it if they used Drachinifel’s version of Thunderchild
Tell me about it. Heck, I would love an anime version of this manga. The last volume (3) just released, and it's overall one of the most faithful adaptations I've seen. It did, however, add some cool things in a final battle involving the briefly mentioned flying machines the Martians were building toward the end. This version had the flying machines dropping tripods from the sky. It's freaking cool!
I just got to the second Book and by far "The Thunder Child" is my favorite Chapter

I was able to get the Manga in Germany. I know a little German so it’s a great reading the manga
Oh, I hadn't heard of a German localization! I only knew French and Russian.
Best part of The War of the Worlds, The Thunderchild!
its flattering when you get adaptations such as this but the original books thunderchild took out 3 tripods before succumbing to its wounds, it was also a pre dreadnought rather then an armoured cruiser, but ill give a hand to the one who made that comic, it sure made the events look more dramatic, easily the most iconic chapter in the story
Considering most adaptations don't even take place in the original setting, let alone portray Thunder Child, Jeff Wayne's version and this version do a pretty good job of helping portray the epicness of the original chapter.
@@TayoEXE if your referring to those terrible American movies, then its kinda a trope at this point that American adaptations cant do British very good lol, jeff waynes thunderchild was based on the majestic class dreadnought, japan has a ship very similar to the majestic called mikasa its a very beautiful ship, you will find her in yokosuka, but i do agree it gives thunderchild a bit more bang to its thunder where the crew of the ship carry on going despite being choked by the smoke
Yeah, the 1952 and 2005 War of the Worlds movies. American adaptations tend to like artistic liberty too much in my opinion. I wish they would just be more faithful to the original setting and elements. The new BBC series at least took place in Victorian England I believe, but even then it still had its problems. Even had the black smoke at least! Regardless, I've just rarely seen visual adaptations of Thunder Child in general. This manga and t
Jeff Wayne's musical visual cues focus entire sections on this scene, and now I've never seen a cooler "boat." Haha
I don't know much about ships, so thanks for sharing that info! I should have paid more attention when I went to Yokosuka. :o
The Thunderchild was weird. Drachenfeild did a video on it, but it’s described as being a torpedo ram, an ironclad, and having guns large enough to decimate a fishing boat. A combination that didn’t exist irl (the only torpedo ram to enter British service had very light armor and armament). Jeff Wayne’s version wasn’t even accurate in that sense (he depicts her as a Canopus-class battleship). So, imo it’s very open to interpretation and artistic liberty there
@@sirboomsalot4902 In a way, it shows how good he was at anticipating certain developments of military technology. At the time of writing, dreadnoughts weren't a thing yet. He looked at the most modern ship of his time and thought "I'll go with that, except I am sure that in the near future, all viable combat ships will need huge guns"
If they make another novel adaptation of War of the Worlds, let’s hope they’ll feature the Thunderchild as a heroic role, or we will be very disappointed.

Virgin bar stool vs chad torpedo ram
xD I love that is shows the crew. Makes Thunder Child feel like a real Chad.
This is so badass, seeing the crewmen bleeding from the mouth but still barrelling right through the gas brought chills through my spine. I wish it depicted the full scope of the battle. Thunderchild blasted apart one Tripard, got hit with gas, then rammed a second, bringing it down, then got hit with the heatray. Still, it charged ahead into the third, and after getting hit a second time by the heatray, the magazine detonates in Thunderchild, causing a carastrophic explosion that takes out the third.
I love Thunder child and it's fall, it represents the final and best hope of Britain in this moment. Britain has is being invaded by a technologically superior force and now an embodiment of the royal navy appears. A symbol of imperial British strength. Which is brought down by the Martians. Just as Thunder child crushed the navies of any nation which resisted the conquest of the British it has been crushed by a greater invader and now Britain is subject to an ironic fate being treated as they have treated others.
Damn. Even the manga is better than the movie adaptations.
Certainly much more faithful, even with its own liberties. Some may prefer the movies, but this manga and Jeff Wayne's hit me differently.
That has to be one of the most intense things I’ve ever watched.
And the thunderchild battle scene is one of the most detailed fight scenes of any novel
With their elements combined, these adaptations really do the scene from the book justice in my opinion.

Literally 😭
Shipboard guns from a small ironclad can kill the fighting machines along with battery fire from field guns . They can be killed , which means that a organized front could be mounted , just gotta find a gas mask with a closed system to stop the black smoke .
an ironclad dreadnaught i suppose
The fighting machines keep adapting to our tactics was the problem. After the artillery crew managed a kill they used black smoke to flush them out ahead of approach, keeping artillery lines from being set up. After the Thunder Child defeated several, they responded by launching flying machines, which battleships had no answer for at the time
gassmasks didnt exist then

I need Translated version ASAP! The BBC one was absolute trash.
It may be a fictional ship, but I have never cared more about a boat than I have before for some reason. Haha It really does mark humanity's last stand in the original story in an epic way as this was literally the strongest weapon they had against the Martians in this time period.
@@TayoEXE HMS Thunderchild showed humanity's tenacity to live and exist. Even when all the odds were against us, we will fight till the last piece of our war machines stop moving. It was really teary reading this part as this was an old vintage Dreadnought, its still a formidable ship as some fought in World War 2 and survived but its in no way shape or form a capable Naval vessel for such a fight but yet it took on three Tripods before sinking gloriously. It was really something.

I spotted a mistake, in the story, Thunderchild took down 3 Tripods, and here it takes down only 2.
Not so much a mistake as it is just a different adaptation. There are several other differences in the story, but most other adaptations don't even have Thunder Child to begin with.
I feel like the most realistic depiction of the martian invasion from War of the Worlds would actually be the rumbling. Setting and threat aside, those scenes of the panic, chaos, death, and destruction are exactly how I imagine it
I'm not a fan of how the tripods look in this but other then that this looks great I may wanna buy this my self one day and take a read :)

Totally agree! That's why I put it together. I wish there was a movie or TV adaptation that actually had this scene. Let's hope for a War of the Worlds anime or something. Haha
Is the movie with Tom cruise also based on the original book??? If yes why is the movie so much different then the manga?
Yes, the two American-made movies from 1953 and 2005 are based on the novel, but much more loosely. They are set in then modern America, for starters, but the Martians end up dying because of bacteria like in the novel. The Heat Ray is a common element too. However, the original novel is set in England around 1899, so no force fields, and a much different plot. Jeff Wayne's musical and this manga are examples of adaptations that took less liberties and were much more faithful to the book.
To answer your question, the movies are so different probably because American directors and producers had less confidence that the original story would be interesting enough to mainstream local audiences. Same issue with other live action adaptations in the U.S. All the budget, but all the director's vision.
On your death beds... would you not give all for a chance... just one chance... to stand before impossible odds... and valiantly scream. *you shall not pass!* ... This manga would have been perfect if it only wen't with the origonal design for the Martian fighting machines.
As far as I'm aware, there isn't technically an "official" design of the original fighting machines beyond the novel's text description. I found a post on Reddit by Quoissantu who compiled a list of descriptions that's pretty cool though.
Post:
Fighting-Machines:
Appearance:
* a monstrous tripod
* legs have knees
* like a dish cover
* articulate ropes of steel dangling from it
* also described as long, flexible, glittering tentacles that can grip things
* brazen hood that can swivel, which is distinct from the main body
* every part of the machine can fit underneath
* giant, white metal fisher basket on back
* puffs of green smoke squirt from joints
* body like aluminum
* described by one man as “boilers on stilts”
* Martian pilot is visible from the outside with effort (most likely through glass)
* cowled
* bleeds a ruddy brown
Armament:
* kind-of arm with complicated, camera-like metallic case
* case flashes green and has a funnel at one end that shoots heat ray
* jets that shoot superheated steam that turns the black smoke to powder
Height:
* higher than many houses
* nearly a hundred feet high
Movement:
* seen traveling half a mile in roughly 1 minute (\~30mph) (\~48kph)
* capable of moving at the speed of an express-train (30mph/48kph)
* this is according to newspapers
* as fast as a flying bird
* moves with a rolling motion
* it might gallop?
* moves uncontrollably when killed in motion
* legs can retract
Sound:
* calls “Aloo! Aloo!”
* makes siren noises when upset
* makes “Ulla!” sounds, or “ululations,” when calling for help
Also, there are the Alvim Corrêa illustrations that gave them the original image of a water tower.
