2001 TVR Cerbera 4.5 Red Rose review. Revisiting the wild one 20 years on!

  • The TVR Cerbera 4.5 Red Rose was the most powerful version TVR built, with a quoted 440bhp available from its bespoke 4.5litre V8. 0-100mph came up in just over 8 seconds, making it quicker than a Ferrari F40. But how does it compare to today's supercars? That's what I wanted to find out..

I spent a week at TVR Blackpool for an A-Level piece of coursework when I was just 17, and i'll never forget being taken out (shoe-horned) in the back of their development Cerbera with the test driver. To come off the roundabout and see the road you're about to go down out of the side window was truly marvelous for the teenager that I was. Getting back in my Nova to drive back to Suffolk was an anti-climax like no other, as you can imagine. Hugely flawed yet wonderfully unique and frankly awesome machines. Such a shame they've gone (yes, I know that on paper they haven't, but let's be honest...)

We were there for nearly two weeks and the last day we was there, one of the managers took me and the engineer out for a drive in a TVR and it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had, especially as a car mad 17 year old. I vividly recall reading the Evo article when the Cerbera went over to Germany. There was a reference in the article to a group of Mercedes engineers standing around making condescending comments along the lines of, "Only the British would consider making an inlet manifold out of cellotape!" They went very quiet when the Cerbera DESTROYED their Brabus 6.1 'wunder' weapon. I was delighted that the TVR rubbed their noses in it. I once visited the TVR factory in Blackpool and enjoyed a full tour of the factory, it was a fascinating experience. TVR's are purists cars, no bullshit, no nanny state driver 'aids.' Proper cars for proper driver's who don't want a computer on wheels, or to have their hand held by 'driver aids.'

I visited a friend in the UK back in 2001, and while there we managed to get a guided tour of the TVR works in Blackpool. I’ll never forget it. We were surrounded by new Tuscans, Chimaeras, Cerberas, etc. in various stages of completion... saw the chassis being welded up, saw numerous Speed 6 engines standing about waiting for installation, watched the ladies in the upholstery shop, etc. Great times indeed. Watching you flinging this Cerbera took me right back to that tour. Best wishes from Missouri, USA.

It's interesting to hear Harry mention it's 'changing mood' towards the end of the video- it's so true! I actually passed over a 4.5 Red Rose in favour of a Speed Six when buying mine- heresy amongst Cerbera enthusiasts- because it was simply a better drive, it had better manners, no drivetrain shunt, better power delivery, and more supple suspension. From the sounds of it his 4.5 might benefit from the latter, mine soaks up bumps surprisingly well and is a genuinely comfortable and liveable car. The Speed Six is considered to be the poor relation, but a properly rebuilt one will produce a genuine 350bhp, and on the road that's plenty enough! The AJP is a stunning engine, but opportunities to open the taps enough to enjoy that extra little bit of power are so few and far between on UK roads and that sealed the decision for me.
Those moments of sheer concentration and joy that are plain to see on Harry's face- that's exactly what these cars are about! They're pure analogue drivers cars which deliver, in my opinion, the best combination of fear, elation and satisfaction this side of the real lightweights, Lotus, Caterham etc. You have to work hard to extract their best and the pay-off is huge. The long-throw throttle is perfect for balancing the car through corners, especially with a bit of slip angle, and the revs rise so voraciously that the perfect heel and toe downshift is enough to bring tears to your eye. The brakes are, as Harry says, fabulous. The cabin layout is intuitive and well suited to hard driving, of course with no driver aids TVRs will punish the unwary but a skilled driver couldn't be better equipped for an enormous amount of fun- and as long as you're not ham-fisted and unsympathetic, a Cerbera doesn't need to be a scary car. They're very composed and with such a long wheelbase and such quick steering even the most sideways moments can be quickly tamed and swept up.
When compared to it's contemporaries, a Cerbera is (in everything but badge perhaps) a supercar. I have never sat in such an exciting and cossetting cabin, it's true that the build quality is not to the standard of mainstream manufacturers and even the best examples will have rough edges, but if you can overlook those then you'll find yourself in an environment that cannot be matched by any mainstream manufacturer in terms of feeling special. Surrounded by swooping leather and that wonderful instrument binnacle, I'm afraid any Porsche that can be bought for TVR money looks like a Volkswagen in comparison- all plastic and straight edges. You almost need to step up to the likes of Ferrari or super-rare exotics before you can find an interior that's as interesting and endearing. I'll always maintain that the sensation of speed is far more important than the performance figures themselves, which is where the TVR excels- but even in spite of that it still possesses a genuinely impressive turn of speed even by todays standards (especially as most of them seem to tip the scales somewhat lighter than the 1275kgs Harry quotes- they did vary a lot!). In these days of anything fast being 4WD with computer-controlled this and active-that, not to mention more often than not being turbocharged and super-refined to a level that Peter Wheeler could never have even dreamed about, the noisy raucous old Cerbera has never. felt. faster.
'Never meet your heroes', the saying goes. Well I had a Cerbie pinned to my wall as a 10 year old, and now I have one sat outside my window- I am absolutely smitten, and the more I drive it the more smitten I get. They are utterly bonkers, spectacular, and so wonderful. I urge anybody who hasn't experienced one to right that wrong as soon as possible.

Well said! I love mine. I'm assuming the one revieved will have had a very good chassis rebuild, which could mean more reiforcement and perhaps something like zinc coating that would add a bit more weight to it. Just speculating really.

But when TVR closed for good, it wasn't just the worst disaster imaginable, it was like having your very heart and soul ripped out. The automotive world will never be the same again. SAAB deserved it. What people forget is Saab even when GM vauxhall had found out how to fix the problematic parts on the cars, saab would refuse to use them. Case in point when Vauxhall/Opel sorted out the intake manifold on the JTD Alfa lumps, saab refused to replace the older part that would detonate the engine when the swirl flaps got ingested. That was Saabs decision they completely refused to fix issues as in their head they had a "the best version" Also the so called 'fast era of saab' they got utterly trounced by Ford and Vauxhalls fast models like the cossie for example. Some fast car that when a montego turbo could walk past it at 80mph

To me, TVR's will always be like early Lamborghini's. When I was growing up in Bruges, Belgium around the early naughties there was one dude who went from a Maserati 3200GT to a TVR Tuscan in that beautiful pearlescent colour. Nothing else like it on the road, 100% authentic.

I grew up a few miles from the TVR factory and for my birthday when I was about 14 my cousin arranged for me to get a guided tour of the factory. I remember seeing the full sized clay model of a new car which looked like a hard top Chimera, it turned out to be the Cerbera. Full access was allowed, imagine that happening today! During development they were testing it a lot on the roads and one came past me on the A585 in Thornton at about 120mph. It sounded epic. I’ve loved them ever since

In the Late 90's, i owned 2 TVR Cerbera 4.2 (P666TVR & P875 NON) and they were my daily-drivers, all year round
I did over 45K miles in those two cars, and loved every minute - reliable, exciting and made me feel very special

Imagine the people coming the other way when Harry comes round the corner on full song, grinning like a kid in a sweet shop. That would make my day every time.
We need more cars like this. It shows just how poor modern stuff is from a feel, sound and most of all how hard they are trying point of view.
This has to be one of the best cars on the channel so far and thats a pretty high bar.

It let water in through every possible place it could let water in, dumped a full tank of petrol onto my drive, and one morning I found it in the middle of the road after it had rolled off my drive when the handbrake failed. I didn't even get chance to enjoy it over a Summer, as I was so desperate to get rid of it. I recorded 18 faults in those 6 months. I'm not surprised they went bust.

    • @NigelMarston
      @NigelMarston 3 роки тому +4

Quite right however owing to the 75 degree angle, the firing sequence isn't a regular one either. Pairs of cylinders fire in a sort of heart-beat, ba bam, ba bam, ba bam. At higher revs this makes for a really harsh noise - lovely harsh - as though it would be the Devil's choice of V8. Very business-like.
After two Caterhams, one of which was almost 250bhp, I was looking for something with a hard roof that gave a level of performance I wouldn't be disappointed with. I ended up testing a number of cars from Porsches to Lotuses and in the end the only thing that had the race-car immediacy that the Caterhams gave me was a 4.5 Cerbera. An amazing car and engine if there ever was one. Mine had the short induction kit which moved the torque further up the rev range increasing its power. It also had an aftermarket ECU. There weren't many options for aftermarket ECUs then because of the heartbeat firing sequence, but Emerald came up with the goods (I had Emerald ECUs on both of my Caterhams too). This combination allowed mine to be mapped to Red Rose power levels.
I am not sure I'd have the nerve to own another though. There's some support for TVRs in the aftermarket world but some parts are tricky to get hold of. I remember being particularly worried about having to source a windscreen, if ever that became an issue, as no-one made them anymore and the TVR-owner community was only occasionally able to convince manufacturers to make things in batches.

A proper white knuckle ride though when you put your foot down - sadly though the lack of dependability led her straight in to the arms of her local Porsche dealer and multiple subsequent 911s.
