Hidden problems within all decks! That take-up idler gear on the capstan is something I've not seen before, must admit I'd be 'turned off' by that. Just MO.
It's not too bad once you figure out how to fix it!
Thank you for the post. I have the same model and the take up wheel would not turn when play. The roller and capstan work and the take up wheel would not turn to take up the tape. I have not taken the deck mechanism apart yet but want to know if the take up wheel is driven by the pulley tire or if there is a belt between that drives the take up wheel. Were you able to find a replacement of the pulley tire locally? Any info you could share will be much appreciated.
Look at 0:48 in the video. There is a rubber tire on the capstain that the take up pulley makes contact with when you press play. The capstain is driven by the motor via the flywheel that it is connected to. The rubber tire on the capstain melts over time and leaves a sticky rubber goo mess. You can replace the rubber tire on the capstain with latex slingshot tubing with an inner diameter of 2mm and an outer diameter of 5mm.
Thank you so much. I took it apart and you are exactly right. The capstan rubber all melted. The idler tire looks fine. I will try the slingshot tubing method. Hope I can save it. Thank you again. Very much appreciated. I enjoy the goodwill shopping unboxing. I like vintage gears and they were much better quality than today's stuff!
Forgot to ask one more question.. do you have recommendations on replacement of the idler tire? Is there an inexpensive alternative for the rubber portion of the idler tire? Thank you again
