Great video. Was M/V Gavea "Hovering" beside the Edison Chouest? Is the M/V being helmed controlled manually? or Is there some sort automatic stabilizing and positioning system?
I am catching up on your video posts.
MV Gavea is the name of the ship, Edison Chouest is the company. Most platform supply vessels (PSVs, or OSVs, offshore supply vessels) have DP (dynamic positioning) to keep them in place during transfers. You have to have your DPO (dynamic positioning officer) certificate to work on these vessels as a mate/master. The drill ship is a different company, Ensco DS-5 was the name at the time. Drill ships are also on DP and the same goes for their officers aboard.
I'm a Cadet at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, and Ill be doing my commercial ship next summer, would you recommend Chouset for your commercial ship? Do you want to work on OSVs?
Yea, I liked it a lot and I learned a great deal. I do plan on pursuing a position with an OSV company next year

Depending on the rig and position will depend on your interent access. If you are just a hand, good luck getting anything reliable. Bandwidth is a precious commodity.

Thanks :) Yea, it was generally a really good experience. Sometimes it got a little boring, but any job in this industry is going to get boring at times. The crew was great and they let me drive and work the DP system regularly.
Just retired from ECO after 20yrs., started as an OS and retired as Master. ECO treaded me just fine.

78-81 Intracoastal City mostly Arthur Levy Entp. Cozumel Island, San Jose Island, Padre Island....ya those were the good ole days....I wonder if these were where paper mates come from [school time rating] thats what we called them if this is them now? Next best thing to military time working the boats...no combat just rough seas good crew....bars and cajun women... /;^) any idea where this is? I seen a Candies boat pass by

Who cooks on the boats do they have chefs and maids ?
On these boats they have a cook. I work on containerships now and we have a Steward Department that consists of the Chief Steward, Chief Cook, and Assistant who takes care of sheets/towels for the officers
Funny thing to see... Here in Brazil, you can`t step on top of cargo and neither work without coverall and we have THOUSANDO of papers while doing this kind of operation because of Petrobras regulations.
It seems like life onboard ECO is simpler on USA!
back when I worked these [78-81] we did not even wear life preservers unless shit was serious i.e. rough seas...right now I can not recall ever wearing one...wait, except for Personal Basket transporting off a crane lol...

Shure! But I'm European, I don't know if there are any Americans working on the North Sea. Maybe some on the offshore construction or offshore support vessels. You only need a strong stomach to survive winter, the weather here is horible compared with the Gulf of Mexico. On the other hand, you sail on seaworthy ships and there are a lot of career opportunities.

Unfortunately you have to be a USA citizen. Or at least have a green card. I've heard it's difficult for foreign citizens to get into but I don't know the details
