Thank you for sharing your emotions. The longer contracts you work at sea, the stronger these feelings are. I work 4-6 week contracts since a few years ago. I wish you find something similar as well. It is a sweet spot, in my opinion.

All Matson ships should be blessing their vessels the Hawaiian way: 1. Fill a small bowl with fresh water (salt water is used for cleansing). 2. Obtain a long leaf (ti leaf if possible, fern leaf is next best, but any leaf will do). 3. Hang some kind of lei over the gangway or entrance to the boat (flowers or leaves, real or symbolic. In Hawaii maile vine would be used if possible). 4. Announce to all present the purpose of the blessing. 5. Cut or undo the lei (this is like cutting the navel cord). 6. Dip the leaf in the bowl and sprinkle all areas of the boat while giving some sort of blessing ("May this boat be blessed with love, power, and success" (in Hawaiian: E ho'omaika'i i keia wa'a me ke aloha, me ka mana, me ka pono). 7. Have everyone present hold hands on or near the boat and give a personal blessing for the boat and the owners/operators. 8. End the blessing with a song, a chant, or a simple "Thank you" and a hug. 9. Finish with a luau, a "pupu" (snack) party, or some kind of refreshments.

I have a question that might betray my newcomer status to this topic. As I watched a cruise ship navigate so seamlessly on the screen, I couldn't help but draw parallels to flight simulators. Is this experience akin to a virtual training ground for shiphandling? By the way, it was the Francis Scott Key incident that led me back to your channel. Your name struck a chord as I recalled reading about you in the Wall Street Journal. Interestingly, just the other day, I found myself at Des Moines Beach, surrounded by thoughts of Vashon Island. It wasn't until the recent bridge collision that it all clicked - you're the familiar face from that captivating channel.

The company really said "the challenges we all face"?! Mfer, your employees have been literally trapped in a shipyard for MONTHS, just trying to stock enough food to continue surviving, let alone getting out! What challenge were YOU facing, mister management? Salvaging enough profit to still get your bonus? Fuck outta here. I see that corporate attitude at the railroad as well, and it grinds my gears to no end.

Looks like an upgrade in accommodations! Here’s a future video suggestion…compare and contrast between 2nd mate duties and Chief Mate duties. You mentioned the main difference between navigation and cargo, but maybe dive in on that a bit more without divulging any company specifics of course.
