My mom used to make these! She used to paint on them so we had a spring/summer one with daisies on a robin's egg blue background and an autumn one with leaves on a mustard yellow background. If you like to paint, then these are a great way to display your art without limiting yourself to just your walls!
They fell apart, sadly. But they lasted about ten years in a high-traffic area! This is a really sturdy project and I want to make them for my kitchen and front door. I have quite a few of my mom's paintings too. She painted a whimsical shoe series for my room when I was a kid, and she painted an abstract lady for her bathroom that I love to death. Us apples didn't fall far from our trees, did we? :)
Mark, fabulous and easy ideas as usual. I have pets and even cheap area rugs are too hard to keep clean, especially in high traffic areas. What a great way to get the perfect rug for those of us who don't want the bland, mundane, or insanely expensive shot of custom colours and design. Thank you!!
Your rugs made me want to see that kitchen! So I took the online tour of your craft house (I'm so envious!!). When I saw your blue & green stripes I flipped! In my once upon a time vacation home I'd created a fantasy room in those colors! It was based upon a crazy self portrait by my son (his birthday gift to me) that is framed in turquoise. Had a green IKEA sofa and a funky turquoise armoire + chest of drawers from their kiddie department. I got a crazy lamp in those colors--from a hospital gift shop, of all places! Bought a lop-sided mirror with colorful circles. And found three large, painted wood 'purses' to add interest. I painted the wooden floor white, and threw in a green shag rug. Cheerful+FUN!!
@@MarkMontanoMakeYourMark Mark, I have a wall that houses a non-vented gas fireplace. The 5-6" surround is slate. Above the fireplace is an opening that houses our tv and a shelf with a few decorative pieces. What could you do to create textural interest on that wall, understanding that it does get warm?
Omg the timing could not have been more perfect!!! I was having a hard time looking for a rug and was considering if I should just paint my own design ^^
Awesome tute! I have been thinking about painting a canvas rug for my new apartment, but now, I know I will do it. Thanks so much for the easy to follow instructions!
Amazing! few things to say here, first I LOVE LOVE LOVE the rugs, they turned out amazing, I especially liked that trim that you glued on, it gives it a nice vibe, another thing you talk about your kitchen, maybe do like a house tour? I mean I'd love to see (and hopefully other people too) what's inside the house of such a creative mind like yours, and finally I recently moved to the US (yay for me!) that's why I haven't been posting videos like before, have a nice day Mark and keep creating.

....ok, here is one I REALLY LOVED, watching you make ! You are SUCH a "trip"...and THAT is a GREAT compliment, buddy ! I am going to share, right NOW ! Happy Saturday
Thanks for sharing. I know you said before you was on an episode of the Christopher Lowe Show when it was airing. Did you see the episode he demonstrated on how to make a painted rug using remnant from a piece of vinyl flooring? Very inexpensive to make. I think the hardest part is deciding what you want to paint on it. The creative possibilities are endless. You have your own one of a kind, hand painted vinyl rug.
The linoleum rug has been at the top of my list for awhile now, every time i see one on TV or in a magazine, it causes terrible crafting jealousy! I'm pretty sure i can find a precut roll of the flooring for cheap, but didn't at my local chain home store like I hoped. It was closer than the place I should have checked at, lol. Anyway, you have great taste in repurposed items :)
@@MarkMontanoMakeYourMark Hi Mark, I have been creating lots of things over the past few years but got out of the habit of uploading content for my UA-cam. But I am back and plan to upload one video a week. Thank you for keeping up with me! Means so much! :-) And I always love watching you and your talented creations!
Love this project and how it turned out. And thanks for introducing me to E6000 stitchless. I never heard of it before but it is definitely something I would want.
Great tutorials! In a similar project I posted on my channel, I painted the back of a large Home Depot rug I found on the street and it turned out great, looks like a custom sisal rug!
I'm almost done with it it's different than this and I'm not sure because both fabrics aren't too thick but it looks good I'll send you my picture as soon as I finish thank you very much
Mark I've always liked your work. With the colorful playfulness you REALLY caught my hippy-boho spirt. I can't wait to have $$ to start your projects! TY again! 💎XO🌹XO💘XO💜XO💎
Mark... you have done it again! Wonderful! But could you do it with a towel for a bathroom? We just moved into a new place and the bathroom really needs some love. I already made a shower curtain, but I can't find a rug to match, only towels. Plus it would soak up the water if we can make this work.
Hi Bellamina, you could not do this with a rug. I think that the terrycloth would just be too weird and thick for the polycrylic finish. However, you could buy a matching fabric and do it or buy another shower curtain and make a matching rug? Just a thought.
I really love this idea, I could see these being used as table runners too (maybe that's just me) I really must see if I can find your book, at the moment I just have a big ass, I better get the book to go with ;D Thankyou for the inspiration.
Those look so cool. I gotta ask since I wanna make some of this stuff, where would I find the polycrylic? I don't wanna have to run all over town, potentially getting lost.
You can get that at most hardware stores. It's the most popular brand and there is a link to it in the description. Call around. I'm pretty sure they sell it at Michaels, too.
Hi Mark! this is awesome! I am in the process of redecorating my back patio and I will be making lots of your projects. 😊 You are such an inspiration and your videos are so didactic too! thank you so much!! I have a quick question on these rugs, how do you clean them? Will outdoor fabric work too? thank you so much! and I have said it before but I am honestly so happy I found you!

It's easier if you use one piece of thinner fabric and seal that to the heavier canvas. Find a really thick canvas and you'll be good to go. Also, since you have kids, I would definitely put non slip on the underside.
Really cool, but how foot friendly are they? What do they feel like when dried? Plastic? Canvas? They look neat. Can they be cleaned somehow? Thanks! xoxo Jen
Yes, Jen, they can be easily cleaned. Mine are in perfect condition. They're not soft like rugs, BUT you can glue a thin padding under them for cushion and they're just fine. I've had mine up for over a month now and they're in perfect condition.

Thanks Tania! Working on another rug diy this weekend. It's really pretty. Think you might like it!
Can you use any glue or just E600, like PVA or something??
I wouldn't because you''ll be ironing the edge and the StitchLess is an iron on glue that will keep the fabrics together.
Awesome!
Thank you!
Did you launder the fabrics before painting them?
I didn't. But I suppose you could. They're completely coated in the acrylic so they don't move at all once you're done with the project.
questions can they be washed and did you use real lipstick or was that just the color?
+Gena Dudley Nope, that was the name of the color.
they are so cute but not being able to be washed with kids would change things for me doing them :/
