I remember getting this figure for Christmas in 1984 and, like you, this character was also my introduction to the existence of the Navy SEALS. I always liked water themed characters as a kid, because you could take them into the bathtub with you and have adventures while taking a bath. Although, I was always afraid to take my Torpedo figure into the tub, because I knew submerging him in water would cause all of his metal parts to rust. As a result, I probably didn't have as much fun with the figure as I probably should have.
I haven't purchased the Classified version yet, because I really dislike Hasbro's "plastic-free" packaging and scaled back my collecting by 90-95% once Hasbro introduced it (I actually gave up on Marvel Legends entirely once "plastic-free" was implemented). However, now that Hasbro has announced that they are going back to the plastic bubbles (which they never fully abandoned to begin with), I feel that I can start to collect these lines again. So I'm going back and picking up some of the figures that I skipped and Torpedo is likely the next figure I will get.
Although, now I'm wondering if I should hold out for a Retro rerelease of Torpedo with a new backpack that's more accurate to the classic figure.

Yes we do. Luckily, they made the new ones knowing that, while other toy lines like Neca, make shit that looks fun, then you play with it and ten seconds in it breaks. I got a Predator from them that lasted twenty minutes before its spear snapped
You can't go wrong with either. I also didn't know what a Navy SEAL was as a kid and this figured introduced it to me.
I do think the Classified one is excellent.

I never had the OG Torpedo because I didn't start obsessively collecting GI Joe until 1985, so I made damn sure to get the new Classified version!

Awesome review. Although I believe that they are airtanks in the og one's backpack. Torpedo was my first figure when I was a kid so I definitely have alot if love for him.
Yeah, he was a great one. Didn't he have airtanks and little torpedos? Although -- I'll admit, a lot of times I will pretend something is cooler than it is. Like making Scrap-Iron's corded remote control an electric whip
