    Hi Erin,
    I have found your tutorials/explanations to be the most clear on given topics.
    I have a request from a student to change the font properties in a "List of Tables", generated from the insertion of captions, to a style different than the body text caption styles created in the chronology of building the document.

    • @erinwrightwriting
      @erinwrightwriting  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you so much for watching! There are several ways to change the font style of the list of tables or figures, but I think the easiest is to select the table, select the Home tab, select the Styles dialog box launcher, right-click "Table of Figures" in the Styles pane, select Modify, and then update the font properties in the Modify Style dialog box. I actually have this topic coming up on my channel, so keep an eye out for a full tutorial.

    Hi Erin. I'm finding your videos very helpful. I have a problem with captions you might be able to help me with. The caption for an image appears below the image but then about 50mm lower a place holder appears which blots out the text in that area. I have tried many solutions. None work. Can you direct me to a possible solution please?

    I've been working on Word for many years, and learned a lot from your explanation that I didn't know! I just have one question.
    When you have a reference at the end of the caption and you don't want the reference to appear in the list of figures or tables in the index, how do you avoid this, i.e.
    Caption:
    Fig. 7.1. Semantic wave (adapted from Mabin, 2010)
    In the List of Figures:
    Fig. 7.1. Semantic wave (adapted from Mabin, 2010) ......................... 10

    • @erinwrightwriting
      @erinwrightwriting  2 роки тому

      That is a great question! I am not aware of a way to automate the process, but you can manually delete the parenthetical information in the list. When you do so, Word will fill the space so the page number stays in line on the right margin. Thank you for watching!

    Thank you very much Erin. Please could you help with mult-level captions for Figures and Tables e.g Table 1.1A and Table 1.1B or Figure 2.1A and Figure 2.1B etc?
    Many thanks for your videos

    • @erinwrightwriting
      @erinwrightwriting  3 роки тому

      Thank you for watching my video. If you already have chapters established, you can add the multi-level captions by selecting the Numbers button in the Captions dialog box. In the Caption Numbering dialog box, select "Include chapter numbers." Best of luck!

    Thank you, teacher, your video is very useful for me.
    Can I ask a question?
    Is the any way to use different caption styles for figures and tables?

    • @erinwrightwriting
      @erinwrightwriting  2 роки тому

      That is an excellent question! Because the figures and tables both rely on the Captions style, I'm not aware of a way to create separate styles. Of course, if you don't have many figures and tables, you can modify them manually. Thank you so much for watching!

    Is there a way to update the cross-reference style as well? For example, I have my figure/table captions set to 10pt blue font bold, and if I cross-reference figure 1 can I set the cross-reference in the text body to the same style as the caption?

    • @erinwrightwriting
      @erinwrightwriting  6 місяців тому +1

      That is a good question! The cross-references are meant to have the "Normal" body style of the surrounding text. As such, Word doesn't provide a separate style for them in the Styles pane. You can, of course, edit them manually if you don't have too many. I wish you all the best with your project!

    • @AlphaNumeric123
      @AlphaNumeric123 6 місяців тому

      @@erinwrightwriting Thank you. It's helpful to know so I can stop searching. I created my own "emphasis" style that I apply each time I insert a cross-reference, which hasn't been too unwieldy for me so far

    Hello...do you know how to change the number at caption?? For example I didn't want to start with table 1.1 but I want to start with table 2.1... do you know how to fix this ?

    • @erinwrightwriting
      @erinwrightwriting  2 роки тому

      Thank you for watching! The multilevel table numbers (e.g., 1.1, 2.1, etc.) are connected to the chapter or section number in which the table appears. So, if you want it to say 2.1., it has to be in the chapter or section 2, as determined in your Multilevel list settings. Here is an article from Microsoft support that you might find helpful: support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/add-chapter-numbers-to-captions-in-word-76aa8706-3453-4a72-ad5c-b87d90ce1698. Best of luck!

    Hi Erin, thanks so much for this tutorial. I am wondering if I can change the numbering format for my tables throughout a same Word document. For example, let's say I want my table in my core report to have the format "ChapterNumber.TableNumber", but in my annex, I would like them to have the format "A.TableNumber". Do you have any tips to share?

    • @erinwrightwriting
      @erinwrightwriting  2 роки тому

      That is a great question! To have the table numbers start with an A for annex instead of a chapter number, I believe you will have to create a section break for the annex and then define a new multilevel list using the Multilevel List button in the Paragraph group of the Home tab. Ensure that the new list will label the annex heading as A (e.g., if the annex heading is a Heading 2, the second level in the list should be A). Best of luck!

    Hi Erin, quick question. When adding a caption to figures on Word (365), after clicking on OK, the image heading is added in as an image and not as text. How do we change it from an image to text as a default?

    • @erinwrightwriting
      @erinwrightwriting  11 місяців тому

      Thank you for watching! Figure captions should be inserted as text by default rather than an image. I haven't encountered the issue you describe, so I'm afraid I don't have any advice. I encourage you to contact Microsoft support in case it is a known glitch they are working on. I wish you all the best with your Word project!

    can i make like table 3 ( bold ) text (not bold and italic) ?

    • @erinwrightwriting
      @erinwrightwriting  2 роки тому

      Thank you so much for watching! Unfortunately, the Caption style affects the label and the caption text, so I'm not currently aware of a method to separate the two. However, you can manually change the labels to bold (if you don't have too many tables) without affecting your list of tables.

    • @erinwrightwriting
      @erinwrightwriting  4 роки тому

      That's an interesting question. Figure captions and table titles are both governed by the Caption style because in traditional publishing they share a style for consistency throughout the text. I think the easiest way to differentiate the two might be to create a separate style and then manually apply it as necessary. However, be sure that "Automatically Update" is not checked in the Modify Styles dialog box. Best of luck!
