He really was one of the great British film actors. He never became an international household name but was always busy in the UK at least and rarely short of job offers. So many great movies too. Ice Cold in Alex, Dunkirk, This Happy Breed and Scott of the Antarctic are personal favourites of mine but what amazes me is that he is only three years younger than the great Robert Donat who he played opposite in Goodbye Mr Chips in 1939, despite Donat playing a veteran teacher and Mills being one of the ex-pupils. Such a wonderful movie and definitely worth a watch if you haven't seen it. Incidentally it was a nice touch you straightening up that grave.

Another good one Paul! It’s sad that you can’t enter many of the churches you come across on your travels but it reflects the modern world unfortunately. At one time churches would be left unlocked but due to the high risk of vandalism they are nearly all locked when no-one is there and the building isn’t in use. Such a shame as these places are microcosms of local history often stretching back a thousand years or more. It’s so nice to be able to read the memorials they contain and learn something about the people that once lived in the area. As always, the minority spoil it for the majority. Anyway, keep ‘em coming!
Paul, great video 👍 Sir John was one of the best, an icon and true gentleman. There are so many movies, Ice Cold in Alex has already been mentioned. The iconic scene at the end, ‘worth waiting for’. One of thee greatest. I know exactly how that feels. A favourite movie of mine, with Sir John was: Tunes of Glory 1960. A great cast, led by Sir Alec Guinness, as Jock Sinclair. Sir John played the new Battalion C.O. Lt Col Basil Barrow, strict and deeply troubled due to being a Japanese POW. Sir Alec had the great lines, “boot boy, band boy and Barlinnie”. However, what a truly powerful and outstanding performance by Sir John Mills. May he R.I.P. 🙏
I've been waiting for this for some time Paul, Sir John Mills, one of the best all-around actors of all time, I remember seeing him in the early 90s in CATS in London.
My Uncle one day was painting in Denham and a gentleman saw him painting and went back to speak to him later and said to my Uncle his employer's wanted to meet him. It was Sir John & Lady Mills and he had a lovely time chatting to them and meeting their dog Hobson. My Uncle agreed to do a painting of their home in Denham for them. Love to know if the painting is still in the family
I was working as a satellite uplinks engineer. I had a job to uplink an interview with Sir John at his house in Denham. I arrived early and parked my satellite track across the road so I wouldn't disturb them. After a short while a lady came to the truck. She was his house keeper and said to me 'Sir John would like to know if you would like a cup of tea'! In his hall he had a collection of hats from his films.

A great tribute Paul to a fantastic actor and person he was a great actor in all of these classic films well done Paul very well presented and fully respectful
Good evening Paul, this gentleman was one of my all time heros and my favourite film wasn't an action or war film, it was Hobson's choice and him playing the down trodden salesman for the scroogey old boss. He was one of our finest actors and one that was loved up and down the land. Imagine getting a second chance at happiness that lasts for over 60 years. Thank you Sir John for bringing our screens alive in the roles that you played on screen, but also treading the boards.
Love your respect for the wind batterd grave. The Mills family are talented and gave us so much. It's not personal if the church doors don't open. Keep trying.

Hi Paul . A superb actor indeed with many great films to his credit . So difficult to pick a favourite , but will opt for , Hobson's Choice . ( Playing , Willie Mossop ) , alongside some other great actors , such as ; Charles Laughton , Prunella Scales , and if you blink , you will miss a very young ,Jack Howarth ( later , Albert Tatlock in Coronation Street . ) . Again , a fine tribute ,Paul , RIP Sir John .
Hi Paul you realy do go that extra mile for us big thanks sir John mills an English icon Ryan's daughter was an epic film an sir John shone so bright you never disappointed us loved this big hug big thanks 💯💯👏👏💯💯👏👏
I adored John Mills, such fine human being and amazing actor. I live in north Elmham, and knew of the Herriot watt naval training school, which although long gone has a sad little graveyard just for a number of boys who through a tragic accident fell to their deaths from the mast. One as young as 12yrs old,. I had ( wrongly is seems) thought the boys had been orphans. Whilst very sad at their loss of life, I’m so glad that Sir John spread his wings, soaring to such great heights in the memorable films he starred in. His daughter Hayley and I must be around the same age, and looked very similar as young girls. When Whistle Down tge Wind was being filmed in Lancashire I was on holiday not far from where filming was taking place, staying with my grandmother….but came rushing home one day in a state of panic, having been followed by a number of reporters and cameramen who ALL thought I was Hayley Mills! What an exciting ,but bit scary time for me, but my grandma who didn’t possess a tv was not amused but this gathering of cars, motorcycles etc etc all calling for Hayley, when my name is Helen. Fun times, happy memories. Glad Sir John found the love of his life with Mary, and together had a wonderful family. As always Paul, huge, huge thanks for all you do. I suspect you visit these churches too early in the day, as they are often opened by church warden or volunteers more like 9-10am time. Fingers crossed for your next visit! Love Helen 🥰🙋♀️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Sir John Mills was the very first actor who caught my attention in hobsons choice, back in the day of my teens at school our class reinacted the film and I played his wife to be ada, ahh the memories and ever since that film I have watched most of them and all Hailey Mills films too, they are the most talented family ever, thank you so much for all your hard work bringing us these incredible people and also a little bit about them, I for one do appreciate it, stafe safe my friend 🥰🥰🥰

Hi Paul, hope you are doing well, John was a great actor, I have watched most of Hayley's films too, back in the day you could walk into a church any time of the day, how things change, good work Paul.🤗
Sir John Mills embodied the resolute, reserved, dependable Englishman. Someone we could all aspire to emulate, particularly during the war. My personal favourite film of his was of course, Ice Cold in Alex. A character with flaws, trying to transport his team through to Alexandria, with an unannounced German spy, and his dependable Sergeant Harry Andrews, trying to keep his head around the scrumptious Sheila Sim. And his reward to successfully negotiate the North African desert? An ice cold beer in Alexandria. AND he made sure the German spy (played by the excellent Anthony Quail) is treated as a soldier, not shot as a spy. Superb film. Superb cast. What you didn’t say was he nursed his wife in their home in Denham through a seemingly endless Alzheimer’s affliction. I don’t know if you knew his house in Denham (a house in a village DRIPPING with English character) or you didn’t want to include it in you’re piece. (It did have a blue plaque, but for some reason it was removed) The sad thing for me is that sir John, his home, his village illustrates the VERY best of England, and it’s a disappearing (if not completely vanished) example of the best of England. I hope you took time to enjoy a pint or two in their delightful pubs. I’m going on St George’s day. There can be nowhere better to celebrate our day.
Sir John Mills, what a man. My favourite JM roles: Shorty Blake in "In Which We Serve"; Billy Mitchell "This Happy Breed"; Jim the AWOL soldier "Waterloo Road"; Pip "Great Expectations"; Capt. Scott "Scott of the Antarctic"; Mr. Polly "The History of Mr. Polly"; Willie Mossop "Hobson's Choice" and Capt. Anson "Ice Cold in Alex."
Another brilliant tribute Paul.. remember ice cold in alex..there is something about the black and white classics...hayley recently been on our screens in the series unforgotten...cheers again hammergazz 👍
Thank you for posting this. A splendid and captivating actor in so many films. I'm sorry to hear he died on St George's day, but not bad for this great Englishman 👍
A true legend /gentleman . he use to live in Denham , village , near pinewood / beaconsfield /ealing studios , to be handy for work ! he also use to do talks about his career ! a excellent share , thankyou ritchie .
So this struck so many chords with me - some I knew and some I didn’t. I knew I was named after Hayley Mills - Whistle Down the Wind was on the night I was born and I was named after her. Ice Cold in Alex is one of my all time favourite films, so I knew that too ( obv!) I also knew that my family came from North Elmham in Norfolk, but I never knew that Sir John was also born here!! I can’t help but wonder if there is a connection between our two families - just how amazing would that be!
Sir John Mills, Sir Bernard Miles, Sir Alec Guinness, Alaister Sim ( turned down a knighthood) , Kathleen Harrison, Eleanor Summerfield....belong in an era well within living memory but in many ways gone forever. In the 80s and 90s, if you were off school because you were " ill" 😊 you could virtually guarantee a film would be on during the day with these folk in it. Always seemed like such a nice fella too. Great vid
I watched this video because Sir John Mills was one of my most favourite actors in . Films like Above Us the Waves put me in awe of his talent. It's nice to see they have a nice resting place. It seems cemeteries over there lack a great deal of care.

Hi Paul, hope you are doing well, John was a great actor, I have watched most of Hayley's films too, back in the day you could walk into a church any time of the day, how things change, good work Paul.🤗
Aww lovely of you to stand those ornaments up Paul xx
Wonderful Actor!! The Whole Family IsvSo Talented I Grew Up Watching HAYLEYS 🎥 Films And Many Of SIR JOHNS Too!!
Yes he was a great actor thank you paul
This was amazing Paul, Sir John was an amazing British actor, RIP Sir John. Thank you Paul for making all the amazing work you do take care xx

Sir John Mills, what a man. My favourite JM roles:

I am at the moment looking at vlogs past some peoples i didnt realised have even past the vlogs are done with love and respect thank you paul ....
