Joe Cole for West Ham was a prodigal talent, who seemed destined to go from strength to strength, then West Ham got relegated. Naturally, top clubs wanted him, including United. He had a good chat with SAF but he was a London lad and got offered a tidy sum. The thing is he wasn't suited to being a winger, lacked the physique and pace, also had to compete with Duff and Robben who had both. So opportunities were limited, however Jose formed him into a force and he got back into England consideration (as a winger). At chelsea they had Makelele, lampard and essien. powerhouses in the midfield, no room for a talented CAM such as Cole. Cole would've shone at United (as a CAM) and I dare say would've challenged the likes of Gerrard and Lampard for England midfield spot.
