Change your Suzuki 4 stroke outboard motor oil. It's simple and only a few tools needed. Use a maintenance kit or just an oil filter and compression washer.

Great vid thanks! I’ve got twin DF200’s ready for my 100hrs service, the dealer wanted $1,100 for the pair! Now I know why they are called “Stealerships!”
I can't find any reason to have a dealership service an engine. I actually allowed the dealership to do my 100 hour service thinking they'd change anodes and other things. All they did was change the oil and take $$$ from me.
Jim, Great video on how to change outboard motor oil on a Suzuki 140 HP four stroke!
Great video by the way. Fast, to the point, and well edited.
Thank you. I try and be as clear and concise. No one needs to hear me ramble on too much.
@@JimWellman You did not ramble at all. A well done You tube video... Fast and to the Point is what is needed more on You Tube for sure. Thanks
Awesome video SIR
I usually run the outboard for at least 10 minutes to warm the oil prior to draining. Opening the yellow oil filling cap allows air to enter and the warm oil to drain faster.
I also grease the throttle and gear shift linkage grease nipple while the side cover is off changing the oil filter. This is the only time you can access it.
Re powering my 18 yr. old DF50, with the same. I have been doing my own tune ups since day one, oil change is easy, follow the book. Unfortunatly parts do wear out, the new DF50's timing chain is now bathed in oil. Good video.
i guess im randomly asking but does anyone know a method to get back into an instagram account..?
I somehow forgot my login password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me
@Thomas Reuben Instablaster :)
@Richard Ashton Thanks so much for your reply. I found the site through google and im trying it out atm.
Takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Richard Ashton it worked and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thank you so much, you really help me out :D
@Thomas Reuben you are welcome =)
Cool! This video just confirmed where the oil drain plug is at on my brothers boat... im trying to find a good video on how to disassemble one but i guess ill be the first one 🤷🏽♂️
The long metal piece is a socket for removing the spark plugs....good video
Thanks, Robert
The tool used for "torque" is actually a spark plug socket.
Thank you for a very informative video. I'm seriously considering. Suzuki for my next outboard!
Welcome. I'm still enjoying mine.
Acá desdé argentina .... Exelente explicación muchas gracias por compartir el cambio de aceite
Thanks for the video, man. It's well made and useful
Thank you my friend for this beautiful education video.
Excellent video! Thanks for taking time to make it.
great video - draining my oil today - DF140 2200 hours...wish me luck
Good luck
@@JimWellman thx have you ever done a video on how to remove the propeller as to check for fishin lines?
@@Logan-ns7uj No, but maybe I will. If you get line in there, I'm pretty sure the only real way to see if there is a damage to the seal is to check the lower unit gear oil for water intrusion. Water will cause the lower unit fluid to turn milky in color.
Jim- What's up buddy, I'm looking at the 140s for repower and you popped up, awesome
I'm happy with mine.Got it in Daytona. Great price. Had a 1996 150 hp Johnson originally, which had lots of power, but can't beat the fuel efficiency of the 140 Suzuki. And it's quite.
7:10 told is for spark plug removal. Thanks for the vid
long socket is for spark plugs
Gotta love when people can't just say "cooler" when that's all that's necessary; gotta say "Yeti Cooler" 😂
You gotta distinguish. A normal cooler is weak and not up to the task. A yeti cooler can support the load. And the drinks are still cold.
@JimWellman Their marketing team loves you. Invented nothing. Created nothing. Just slapped a huge price tag on an old tried and true technology several other companies used for years because they knew the easily persuaded would be the suckers they needed. It probably does well in a 4wd truck driving around the mall parking lot. 🤣
Thanks for the video it helped with my df140a 20hr oil change
glad it helped
Great job Jim. Very Informative!
Take that oil to the top dot "after" running for a few monists. That is full. Anywhere in between is "safe" but you want to maintain close to full.
I prefer using real tools not the ones my grandson plays with... ;-)
I also run the engine a few minutes to warm up the dirty oil.
That tool you show at the end is for the spark plugs.
Very helpful, thanks!
Do not dent the oil filter !!!!!!!!!!! If the oil filter gets damaged it will crack and spew oil everywhere and leave you stranded. 💯. Happened to me 20 miles out of Northeast pass in Venice Louisiana had to come back in on one motor.
Thanks, great video. Just got a new 2021 Suzuki 115, similar to 140 and I was wondering what that one tool was for. The one that helps break loose the side panel Philips screws. That was a big help before I tried to loosen them with just a Philips screw driver. Do you have a video on changing the lower unit lube? I'm experienced on servicing my motorcycles and cars but new to working on my outboard.
Glad it helped out. Enjoy the engine. So far so good with mine. Great fuel economy and super quiet.
Thanks but I've heard if you don't let the Steeler ship do the 20-hour initial service it voids the warranty is this true? And I didn't receive any tools and I'm almost certain they'll tell me what are you talkin about when I ask for them but we'll find out
I can't say for sure, but I will say that I allowed them to do mine and this may be the reason why. I can also say that all they did was change the oil and take $275 from me (back in 2017). Good luck getting the tools. I'm sure they're in the trash with the crate your motor shipped in.
@@JimWellman thanks for reply! Yeah you got off easy, they want $400 from me! Taking it in Tuesday morning. I'll let you know what they said about the tools. Thanks for the video, this is the last time that they will steal money from me that's for sure! I do all the maintenance on my Honda Goldwing, this is quite a bit different, and your video helps a lot! Isn't there another oil for the trim? Or does it all operate off the same oil? This is my first outboard, I've had two Mercruiser inboard outboard and had other stuff to worry about, water fuel separator Etc
@@johnk12345100 the lower unit uses 80w-90. That's standard for lower units.
Okay yeah so that's the lower gear lube, I'll search for a video on that, and then though what about the trim motor is that separate oil or all ran through the oil change that you did?
@@johnk12345100 definitely a different oil than the motor oil. Don't know off the top of my head. I'll search.
Great job!!! Thanks!!!
You got it. Glad it helped.
Excellent thank you
Having no easy access to the filter I mean..... & I just bought a 2021 140a
Excellent, thank you!
Hope it helped.
Could you possibly do a video on your color engine gauge? The one you that you had to reset for the service reminder. I am waiting on my boat. It is at the dealer for a repower from Mercury to Suzuki. If you don't do a video on it, I am going to. I have only found one video and it is for an older model. Thanks and this video was really informative.
What would you like me to show in the video?
Just how the menu works, what it shows... stuff like that. I am debating on buying one and there isn't much info when researching on the internet.
The reason I bought it rather than the analog gauges is because I don't like clutter. I also don't want a bunch of unnecessary holes in my console. One cool feature is that it connects to my Lowrance depth finder. That allows the brightness to adjust on the gauge as I adjust the brightness on the Lowrance. Other data feeds through to the gauge like depth. Someone really put some thought into its design. Only thing I don't like is that one somehow input wrong refueling data, so it now says I'm consuming hundreds of gallons per hour. I haven't looked into how to fix that, but if anyone has input, I'm all ears.
According to the manual, the Suzuki oil filter needs to be changed every 200 hours.
Don’t assume that everyone bought a new engine from a dealer. Many of us bought a used boat and motor.
Thank you!
great video do you have a video on how to clean the trim relays for the power trim
Are you asking about a video showing how to remove and clean the relay connections?
@@JimWellman where are the relays in the motor
what kind of boat did you get that on ?
That is a spark plug socket wrench
Nice
Why not add oil up to the full dot? The more oil the better within the operating range.
I was wondering about that? Looked up the specs and it says 5.8 qts US so it makes sense that he added 2 more after the 1st gallon. When I saw his dipstick after 5 qts, it made my heart jump. OK for starting and testing but not for going out on the ocean. I hope he got the dip stick oil level up to the top dot. Good video for the novices like me.
Do you have a video on changing the lower unit gear oil?
Not yet for this engine. I have one for another old Mercury. It should be basically the same.
HeyJim, this is great thanks! Question: what’s the best method when adding fuel in. What do you do on the C10 gauge? And do you find the fuel remaining accurate? Thanks!
Gonna be honest here... I messed up one time when adding fuel and screen the wrong number, by a lot. That threw everything off and I haven't fixed it yet.
Jim Wellman interesting. I believe it. Just got into a Suzuki 4stroke motor with the c10. So I have been searching for a fool proof method for adding fuel, vs calibrating, vs getting real fuel remaining. There isn’t a lot data out there with accuracy. Thanks for the speedy reply.
That not a compression fitting, it's a gasket, but thanks. Hard for me to get used to 4 cycle outboards. I've never had one.
I've heard mechanics refer to it as a compression fitting saying it is only to be used once due to its change in size due to compression when in use.
Part is listed as a gasket on parts lists, but I guess most gaskets aren't supposed to be used over and over either.
It’s called an metal O-ring or washer. Gasket’s usually are used on rocker covers and oilpan’s of engines and automatic transmissions.
@@JimWellman lets call it a compression washer.
Crush washer is the term I've heard most often. Thanks for the video. About to change oil on my df70a. Looking forward to a lower unit gear oil change video.
what a pain to get to oil filter .........
Sorry if I missed it but do you know how much torque should be applied to the oil drain plug? Also how much for the two lower unit plugs? Thanks!
I don't know. I'm gonna be honest here...I've never paid any attention to how much torque should be applied to anything. I've always tightened be feel and I've never had any issues doing so.
I have a 99 evinrude which is a Suzuki df50 as I understand, the oil drain plug head was stripped and couldn't find replacement
Found one at auto parts store but it is a little longer any issues with using a longer drain plug?
I'm hoping someone else chimes in, but I'd think that'd be ok. After all, it only acts as a barrier to keep the oil inside the engine.
My screws on the cowling are seized. What size socket is the “tool” that Dealer provided. Can’t remove with screw driver.
Used Pb blaster and tap with hammer. No luck.
Sorry, not around my boat. Look on boats.net. They have good diagrams that can show you what you need.
Happened to me, too. You can PB Blaster 'till your cowling is stained, and it still wont come out. I had to drive out the handle and the bushing. Be careful - you're working with plastic. Got a new bushing and plenty of lube. This is a poor design that will allow salt water in - an o-ring would do wonders. I've decided to remove my cowling latches annually and lube them up. If anyone has a clever solution(s), I'd love to hear it.
More on topic - the video on the oil change was great! Thanks!
Did a prop come with your motor also.
I guess you could say so. I got the 140 installed with the electric gauge and the prop for $12,225 back in May of 2017.
I just watched a video of a guy who doesn't know what a spark plug wrench is. Damn!!!
Hi ,what kind of jack plate is that.
It's a 4" Bob's hooked to a 6" setback bracket from Bob's Machine Shop. I needed at least 10" of setback because of my filled in transom. Found the jack plate on craigslist for $400 and the setback bracket from Bob's for $100. That was back in 2008 or 2009.
Good
Hi Jim. What year is your outboard?
Not sure, but I got it in 2017, so I'm guessing it's a 2017.
Those so called “compression fittings” are just plain old oil drain plug gaskets. Nothing more.
Obviously, it's the technically correct thing to recommend they be swapped for new crush rings after every drain. But I've yet to change any, yet to have one even seep. I've done 30 changes on the same washer and still working as advertised.
But I don't gorilla torque things like I see so often. Two surfaces that are machined accurately and clean of debris, don't require hardly any torque (clamp force) to seal fluids. Just enough to keep them from rattling out from engine harmonics.
Non
The public should not be taking instructions from a person that knows so little about the tools and motor that they own .
And the guy is OVERFILLING THIS MOTOR WITH OIL !
Can you point out for them what they shouldn't replicate from this video?
Poor design
They sure could make it easier on us, but I think they do it to deter people from doing the maintenence on their own. Too many people get ripped off for a service because of a "poor design" which is probably intentional.
