I looked on your amazon page, I didn't see one for my 2020 Suzuki DF300AP so I looked on the OceanSouth site but they only had an option for a 2012 Suzuki.
@@captainscottlum2371 WRONG mine is the same cover that was on my old 6 year old 2014 suzuki....it fits my 2020, too.
@@CaptDavesSportfishing I wonder if it also fits the 300?
@@captainscottlum2371 The 250 and 300 are the same motor....just look at your cowling style. from (I think, 200) to 300 the cowling hasn't changed since 2013.
Why did you use 10w40 over the 30? What’s the difference?
When I change the oil on my DF 250, I wedge a small piece of cardboard under the drain plug hole to prevent the oil from running down the motor. Basically make a drip lip for the oil. Works like a charm and I don’t have to wipe the covers down when I’m done.
Hey Capt. Local 904 resident here. Doing my twin 125 zukis tomorrow in the water. (Wish I could change elsewhere but it's really difficult.). I use an inflatable pool tube with a covered bottom and a flat piece of wood in the middle and set it in the water to have a floating oil catch and it works great. Any spillage is caught by the inflatable and I just pull it out when done and dispose of properly. Trial and error and some ingenuity.
Good gawd! Not sure Id even own a boat if I didnt have a trailer! And that means I wouldn't be in the charter biz. Hmmm,
I may have just ended up being a male model instead....haha
You’re the man captain Dave thank you
Sierra are great oil filters. Way better than quick silver. I purchased both sierra and quicksilver for my 3.0 merc and sierra is way better built
Thanks Capt. I just order twin suzuki 200's for my offshore boat! Sooooooo excited !!
Captain, Tim
Happy with my 2nd one, its only 165 hrs right now. I dont run far or long. This 2020 will be for sale in 2-1/2 years from now.
Thanks u help me
Alot
Ok I’ll bite! I’ve learned a lot from you, so maybe this tip will help you👍
I take a piece of thin plastic like Saran Wrap size, use blue painters tape and stick on the side of engine just under drain port to make like a bib, then any oil that drains down the side doesn’t touch the motor, and you can make it small enough to just reach your funnel so it helps stop the last few drops from dripping on foot! JMO.
I was hoping for more ''less' macgyver'isms and a more ''fastener, pipe, funnel'' tricks. On some engines can't remember which, all ya did is cut the filter box a certain way and push it on. as a funnel. Guess, if ya want really better, buy a Merc. or better yet a OXE 300 diesel ❗❗ yes, thats what I really wanted.
instead of that purple for degreasing have you tried Dawn dish soap. Its been used on ducks when in oil spills from tankers. Just a thought.
I have what I have, dude....
Awesome job
Hey Capt Dave,
Next oil change try using 2 or 3 inches (longer if needed) of duct tape beneath the oil drain hole to act as a drain chute to keep the oil from running on the lower
unit when the oil starts to dribble out the hole. Just peal off and dispose of it when finished. You might not have to use Purple Cleaner to get off the spilled oil.
sounds good....but shouldn't have to jump thru hoops.
LoL. Jed hed bih. Informitive vid
Old guys on a ladder scare the c r a p out of me. Great video Dave.
I don't see any old guys in this video.......lol
speak for yourself....🙄🙄🙄🙄I'm not a old guy. Just one that doesn't enjoy a 40 pound cowling cover!
@@blindabinda1234 GOT THAT STRAIGHT! I do more before 7am than most will do all day. Seeing Im up at 3:30-4am instantly every morning.🌅🌅
@@CaptDavesSportfishing my internal alarm gets me up a little before 6 for work... I'm 36... I say by the time I'm 45 it will change to 4.lol
@@blindabinda1234 I've always been a fisherman and a ''morning'' person. I get asked constantly (gets very tiresome) about night fishing, hell I'm dead to the world usually by 9pm in my lazy-boy, so NO I don't run that river at night.
Susuki dealership blames me. In this harbor is 300-400 outboards and mine is the only one going into limp mode. Maybe I got a fresh water motor, as it doesnt run in saltwater
I certainly don't know what to tell you. blames you, you may want to find a better mechanic
Oil, oil filter, fuel filter, anodes and Rydlyme. Keep them fresh and your motor will show you some love.
I use an oil extractor and pull it all out from the dipstick tube. Very little mess if any. Great channel thank you for all you do.
And no way as good!
Look at that shiny new motor. Changing oil in a Zuki is always a mess. If I may Capt Dave add one little tip, If you can if its possible do the oil change in a place or at a time with no wind. Windy day and your wearing it. Iv'e taken many an oil bath.
I have a sheltered area as you know even with a shade screen above motor and leaf catcher hahahaha
@@CaptDavesSportfishing I know you have a great work area, It was more for viewers
@@orowock1 yeah I knew that.
Oil plug hole, 2” blue paint tape, everyone seems to have some, maybe. Seems safe or car paint. Form a trough with the tape. If you get real good you can use small piece of bleach bottle plastic which has a natural form near the top of the bottle, you will figure it out .//// Googled, Blue Painter's tape (better than the tan kind of masking tape, but more expensive) will not stick to or damage your car's existing paint (unless it's very fresh!) as long as you don't leave the tape on for a long time. Good luck
BETTER ENGINEERING.....instead of BS rigging would have been real nice.
Capt Dave's Sport Fishing ,, I just did my 20 hour oil and lower unit change on my new DF 250 Suzuki outboard. Thanks for the warning of dribble all down the side. The blue tape did its job and was easy to make a over hang gutter to bucket, as also used on lower unit as oil runs down the fin. It will not hurt your paint. You ask? If anybody knows a better way, reply in my comments. Just do a dry run with 2” blue paint tape. It works! It was also good talking to you on the phone about a little of everything. 😃
I dont sweat it too much
I'm glad someone mentioned creating a sort of drip guide using tape under the drain plug. I do the same using aluminum tape on my DF90A and it works great with no drips down the leg. I like the aluminum tape vs the painters tape as it seems to hold it's shape better but both methods work well.
Thans for thuis helpfull video
Depending on the oil fill location you can use one of those suction hose things and suck most of it out. Obviously you'd still have to take the plug out and end up still getting oil on the outdrive. You could always install a permanent petcoc where the plug goes. Not ideal but it's an option I suppose.
pumping the oil out was addressed below in another comment, NOT doing that. But with trial and error a hose could be attached just not time to do trail and error.
Really hope you do a video of changing your lower unit
turn up your sound , I said '''''its too messy'''''. I did it right after this.
Really hope you do a video of changing your lower unit
did my lower unit, afterwards. too messy, theres hundreds of how to gear lube on youtube.
Wait, it sounds like that kit came with the new motor? I just bought a new 2020 Suzuki 300 and they didn't even give me an allen wrench! I just did my 20 hour last Thursday
well.....go back and ask for your 20k worth of 4 tools!!!!
@@CaptDavesSportfishing I'm in the process of that, they didn't even give me the owners manual.
Excellent video - Thank you.
Did you end up doing a video on the gear lube process? I didn't see one in your lineup but maybe I missed it.
nope too messy. theres too many on YT already
suppose you have more than 2 qts over the top hole?
Then you better suck it out the dipstick same as in the car don't overfill it's as bad as underfill
Iv always been a fan of Suzuki's engines had a 2004 ltz 400 quad and dr 650 enduro not one problem with motor or transmission. Trade in the quad for a 2007 Yamaha 700 raptor had nothing but problems with the ecm and ya it was the first year they put efi on it. I just like Suzuki
OKAY, but this is a saltwater heavy use saltwater outboard.....not land based play toys. I never even think zuki with any other than a outboards.
@@CaptDavesSportfishing I'm looking into repower my 91 sylvan with a 70hp evinrude I like the Suzuki with the option of troll control.
@@robertsteele667 have it and have never used it.
Great video buddy hey where do you get the oil change kit from didn't see it on your tools of the trade
I'm not listing every thing, it's not a general store. Go to ebay...it is.
What are the disadvantages of the Suzuki cars and why does everyone prefer their Yamaha?
There is no Suzuki or Yamaha cars in United States
You got a mail how to drain the oil whith no mess.
I have no idea what that means.
@@CaptDavesSportfishing On Suzuki use ducktape under the drainplug so you get a lip sticking out 5cm and the oil do not mess up the rig.
@@slafandersson3656 OH....
Well looks like i am in the market for a pair of 4s engines. Yams or Suzuki.
Since BRP has stopped making engines.
No one can test a product like Capt Dave.
I did not see the anchor ball with the handle on in your tools of the trade...remember that
yeah, not running a west marine, just stuff I ""use and have reviewed"". Yams are expensive as all hell, I was quoted back in 2014 a 250 yamaha at 28K, I asked if that came with tits or not? Zuki's 19K , this one here, 19,800 with rebate. YEP, BRP will come out with a electric outboard next, which will be laughable.
@@CaptDavesSportfishing yeah they are proud of those Yams. And i am not sure i trust the Yam dealer that is close to us.
I got quoted 38k fo a pair of 300's. Mechanical not electric shift/throttle
@@chrisbernacki1012 me either. that the reason I went with the zuki. better price and rebates and fly by wire is so great
@@CaptDavesSportfishing looks like you maybe my naint mech when i get them
@@chrisbernacki1012 THERE'S NOT MUCH ABOUT THEM I DON'T KNOW ABOUT, as a ''user'', that for sure. I'd run the piss outa yours, and deal with it ''if'', something goes really wrong. I've learned, I'll be repowering every 4 years if I can swing it.
You didn't mention the oil alarm? Does it reset by it;s self after the 20 hr change.
That had zero to do with the act of changing the oil, 99% of the time, I do it before or after the stupid alarm. I have a hour meter and a maintenance log book. Yes, you have to turn it off, or youll hear the aggrevating beeping. Its in uour owners manual, and if you dont have one, you can get one.
Turn engine to the left and tilt it half way up. have a funnel with large hole gauze in to catch the bolt and washer. in this position you can undo the oil plug and let it drain without it going all over the side of the motor and halfway up your arms... ALSO wear gloves because used oil is much thinner and nastier than you might think and gets deep into your skin.. new oil no problem , old oil bad for you... and its ok for people to say run the motor and then drain, yeah so now you got super hot oil on your skin !!! errr NO.. . no need for the bullshit marine oil in these motors especially when you keep it on a trailer. any 10 30 oil is perfect for these. if you choose to run expensive oil thats up to you, but any 10-30 is fine, even 10-40 is good.
I like the tilt motor idea. WHY they don't mold the tupperware into a scoop is beyond me, or do as merc does. I hardly ever use the zuki oil. Usually buy 2 gallons of just Sierra 10-40 and a filter off amazon or ebay. I never been burnt. Truck or Outboard.
DAVE, WHERE DID YOU ORDER THE KIT WITH THE OIL GASKETS AND WRENCH
Wrench, any auto parts.....I get alot of my parts from boats.net. Any suzuki dealer worth its salt, has the crush washers. and as usual (with stealerships) will charge you double.
Can you link the oil filter wrench you used in this video? Thanks!
no, take your filter to a auti parts store and get the right cup wrench that fits.
Or, how about using a funnel with a screen to prevent any kind of foreign object getting into where it doesn't belong.
my funnel has screen at 15:49 I don't do goofy shit like that buddy of mine did. Others can ''not think''....mechanic shops LUV it.
Where do you get your oil filters and compression washer etc.
Boats.net. or Any suzuki dealer.
@@CaptDavesSportfishing Ok thanks I ordered mine on amazon
need good oil filters go to napa auto parts good prices,
What are your thoughts on pumping the oil out Dave?
NEVER....but I'll never have a boat on a lift or in the water. Orowock, (he commented here) my Crew Chief mechanic doesn't like it, I asked him. Best to get any possible "bottom sludge out", but if you're stuck.....Your stuck!
Question, do you keep the covers on while you're out fishing? Also, do you take them off after and clean the covers to eliminate any saltwater exposure? I am purchasing a boat with Suzukis that are 2 years old. Thanks!
covers? what covers?
@@CaptDavesSportfishing I was referring to the cowling covers
@@jacolen3791 I'm pretty sure he does it keeps sinkers from hitting the cowling
I also use plain old rotella t4 15/40 diesel oil and works perfectly fine on my diesel truck, boat, and quads
in a 20k outboard???
Capt Dave's Sport Fishing no in my merc 3.0. I stay with what ever manufacturers recommend while under warranty. You will see rotella recommended on many boating forums.
@@pablomay28 didn't think so! yeah just did oil in truck today with mobile 15w-40 on sale a wallys world, $10 bucks a gallon x 3....way cheaper than $34 a gallon....bust out another thousand, ''boat!'' BUT ITS MY LIVELIHOOD.
yamaha 300 vs suzuki 300 is best ?
HOW MUCH $$ YA GOT?
Amazon is sold out of the sprayers
ya know why?? cuz they are great. large or the small ones. oh well, got my big boy jus in time!

yes,,,,industries, excuse me.
Mine is a 175 the book says 9 quarts
THAT'S INTERESTING
@@CaptDavesSportfishing 8.5
Should have done that before you started the video
I'll consult you the next time I turn on my camera
Dave would you like to spend 100 on oil every 100 or dump that expensive 2 stroke oil in your tanks every trip.
well, I can buy less expensive 4 stroke oil very EZ. That was my point. If certified, with same ratings, zuki charges $35 a gallon, and another company charges $22 a gallon. Both have same FWC, NMMA rating, and possibly come out of the same factory. Am I getting, so much more because it's Suzuki oil???
Remember, auto dealerships make all their $$ in the parts and shop, versus the actual car sale. No, I gave up on blowing up 2 strokers years ago....from ""lack of lubrication"".
Now if you got a Yamaha you won’t have them problems😂🤣😅
they all have issues! Try changing out your interior anodes as EZ as me!
