- Precision Rifle Network. Today I'm giving you a tabletop review of the Tract Toric 4.5-30X56 ELR scope. Specifically designed for precision rifle long range shooting, this optic has japanese glass, 32 mils of elevation adjustment, illuminated reticle, locking turrets, zero stop, and more. I have had this optic for over a year and have used it extensively. Here are my likes and dislikes and recommendations for you to consider. Please check out the affiliate links below as well.

*my mistake: I say it has Japanese glass. It’s actually built in Japan, and the glass is Schott. I meant built in Japan.
Also, when i said “street price” i meant used, but didn’t clarify. Off day, sorry folks.
It's $1400 - $1500 with the 15% off law enforcement and military discount.
Thanks Joel. I really appreciate these longer-term reviews. I trust your honest & discerning opinions and would love to see more in this (or higher) price point (like your ZCO).
Thank you sir.
There’s a long form review of the ZCO here on the channel.
Thank you for a thoughtful, thorough, comprehensive and well articulated review. Have been pondering this scope and the Apex Rival 4-32 which is unavailable but your review has tipped me over to the Toric 4.5-30X56.
Glad it was helpful!
Great review! Love my Tract Toric ELR
Thanks man!
Great review Joel
Thank you sir!
Not nitpicking at all.
I use my toric as my main 22lr optic. Nrl matches, prs22 etc really never have targets closer than 35ish yards.
25 yards possibly but for safety reasons I dont ever see them having targets set closer than that so 25 yard parallax shouldnt be a concern for anyone looking for a rimfire optic to compete with.
Appreciate the informative long term review update. Sounds like you want a SFP scope for reticle useability at all magnification if you click anyway. There's one on sale for $1050 that MSRP $2755. Posted as a reply to someone below.
Thanks. With this reticle, I completely agree on the SFP.
I own one and I've looked through a couple other of their optics and for the money I agree they make an awesome product. Personally I love their 4-20 it's become one of my favorite optics... but I think you hit the nail on the head they don't make the best of the best but they're no where's near the bottom either.
So, what do you consider the best of the best? Please give names. Also, I have owned from almost the beginning TRACT Toric 4-20x plus TRACT spotter.
@@rudolphferdinand3634 Nightforce, Kahles, Schmidt & Bender, Leopold mark 5 and up, Zeiss's top end optics and the Razor line from Vortex are a few but it's not by much... More of my opinion on that is because they've been around much longer and have built a reputation which is something that can't be bought or rushed. I have the Tract 4-20 and it's one of my favorites but it's still relatively new to the market and if you look through some of the optics I've listed you'd see the glass in the tract isn't as clear... it's really good for the money but it isn't the best. I'm not knocking them I'm just being objective but again for the money they make a great optic...
@@DanielBoone337 here is what I am going to ask Tract Optics, why should I buy another Tract scope when there are others that are better out there? I just bought a new rifle, and I want to put on it the best. Also, I am 70 years old, so I don’t have the eyesight the Athlon scope just ain’t there in the glass.
@@rudolphferdinand3634 like I said man once you get to this level words like better and best become much more subjective... if money is no problem then absolutely step up and buy a very high end optic from the company's I listed. My personal favorites are Leopold Zeiss Nightforce and the Razor line from Vortex but by no means am I saying they make a bad optic. I love the one I have and to date I've never seen a bad review of them so that means their QC is on point.
It better then all of mine. I have 2 vipers 2 credos a forge and a tango4
I find myself shooting alone or with people who think all my 1k$ glass is too much. Much less mach barrels, surefire lights and suppressors. I just can't find like minded people to push me farther right now. Was planning to sell some rifles and glass for a mk5 but like I said people think I'm crazy as is.
Great coverage
I hear you. Precision rifle people are definitely a small niche within the greater firearms industry.
I love my Forge. A highly under rated scope, especially if you managed to get it on midways clearance. Best $350 Ive ever spent on anything gun related.
I have the 4-20 and next to my $2500 razors and mk5s I honestly think it holds up for half the price. It is heavy but so is the vortex. I love my leupolds for how light they are but I would honestly buy this over the razor gen 2 for the savings next time around
Fair enough.
I agree that it’s pretty decent for the price.
I bought my tract scope three years ago from the company the glass is schott glass made in Mainz Germany scope is made in Japan best scope I've owned
Thank you 😊
Thanks for watching.
Nice, fair review. I've got an MOA version on my B14r. I use 30x a lot but that's just personal preference. Agree the turrets are tall and agree with the downside you mention but also think they're gonna be easy to adjust when the weather turns cold and I'm wearing gloves - just more real estate to grab hold of. I'm OK with the reticle but then again I'm usually zoomed in pretty far. I'd actually be happy if it was a 10-30. My only issue with the scope is that for whatever reason, the eyebox seems constrained to me, compared to my other (less expensive) scopes. I've gotta be dead on with my eye placement with this scope, more so than others. At least that how it feels. Oh, and it'd be great if the parallax went down to 15 yards. I can live with 25 but 15 would rock. I do love the glass and build. I prefer black but the sniper gray looks nice with the gray HMR stock of the B14r.
As for other scopes in the $1500ish price range with similar zoom ranges (24 or 25x up to 30x), and a 25yd or less parallax, what would you recommend? I'm likely gonna budget one for my T1x that now sports an inexpensive Arken SH4 Gen 2 I bought on a whim (on sale for 30% off and I was curious). I did have a Nikon FX 1000 on it that I like a bunch but the 50 yard parallax just didn't do the job so that's been moved a my .223/5.56 "DMR" AR. Thanks !
Have to agree with the eye box, other than that It’s been a great scope.
@@tmurray1972 glad I'm not the only one!
The Trijicon Tenmile 4.5-30x56 goes down to 20 yards minimum, is a close twin to the Tract Toric ELR and made in the same factory in Japan at Light Optical Works. It's on sale at Euro Optic and Scopelist for $1050 while everyone else currently sells it for $1755 - $2000. It's the SFP model where the reticle stays the same and won't disappear at the lower magnification. Perfect scope for a clicker dialer. It is the best deal I have ever seen for a Japanese made scope in this magnification configuration with such a high list of $2755. It's about the same level as the Toric ELR with a SFP reticle and a closer focusing 20 yard distance. Has a lifetime warranty too. You're welcome.
The Trijicon Tenmile 6-24x50 SFP also made at the same Japan LOW factory is also on sale from those two places really cheap at $780. It retails for $1655 and sells for $1200 - $1300 everywhere else. I believe it has a 10 yard minimum side focus and use a lighter 30mm tube with not as much elevation travel as compared to the heavier more expensive 34mm scopes so worst case scenario just add a 20moa rail. Has a zero stop too. At this sale price, it's cheaper than the similar Sightron SIII with zero stop.
Deepest condolences since you mentioned you bought an Arken.
If I’m not mistaken, they use Schott glass for that model; German?? Cool review. Thanks for the input!
You are correct. Check the pinned post. Thanks for watching!
I guess every eye is different, but to me. These toric scopes are clearer than anything Vortex makes. Imo Vortex is the worst value for the dollar since they increased their prices like 15% across the board. Low is a fantastic optic company and there is several scopes that come from them. Most are very similar. This thing is a lot like the Cronus and the maven.
Agreed. The Toric ELR is nicer than the Razor 2 and the Cronus BTR. Replied to someone else about a SFP version Japanese 4-5-30x56 LOW scope Toric ELR brother from another mother on sale for $1050 that has a $2755 MSRP.
What I would like to see is a comparison between scopes set up on a 100 yard range with no digital magnification from a phone or whatever is used to record it looking through the scope and running the magnification up and down to the same power settings on all the scopes. So if you are testing 3 scope's the minimum magnification on all scope's and the maximum magnification on all scope's so if you have one that's a 6-18 and another that's 5-30 you would use the 6-18 power setting for all scope's and see if they all show the same image at those power settings or if they are different.
Don't judge a scope by the image you see through a camera. Pointless
@@eggbert191 it's not the image that I want checked it's the magnification do they match or not is what I would like to find out
Joel any thoughts on the Nightforce NX8? Thinking about getting one for my 6.5 CM to replace the SWFA Super Sniper that is on there now which will end up on another build in progress. I like NF stuff and it doesn't have the busy tree reticle in it like everyone now does.
It would be a good choice.
Funny enough, I actually swapped out my Gen 3 razor on my NRL22 rig for the 4.5-30 Toric.
After shooting a night match that had a 14 rnd 90 second no-dial stage with 7 targets drom 50 yards out to 275 yards (and back in) to my surprise the EBR-7D doesn’t illuminate the numbers 🤦♂️ (having come from a gen2 with the 7c). Also topping out at 10 mil in the reticle was a pain as well. The Tract being more like a nightforce Mil-xt would have been a huge advantage.
cool, that's saying something. Thanks for the comment.
Would you consider another UA-cam video with the Toric, taking some shots at 50 yards and then at 100 yards and showing how to calculate the mils necessary to go from 50 yards to 100 yards. I expect others who are new to mils as I am will appreciate your explanation. Thank you.
I’ve sold this optic unfortunately.
Thanks for the review. The manufacturer advertises this scope as having Schott (German) glass. Which is it? The scope is made in Japan, but what is the glass?
Check the pinned comment
Thank you for a very informative video. I am thinking of picking up either a Tract Toric 4.5-30x56, or a Zeiss LRP S3 6-36x56, during the likely upcoming Black Friday sales later in the year. I would expect that the Tract would then come in at around $1525 (10% off, no sales tax) and the Zeiss would come in at around $1875 (25% off, before sales tax). Have you by any chance had an opportunity compare the glass of the Toric against the S3?
I’m familiar with both. The glass is very similar in my opinion. Both are solid options.
Thanks so much Joel..But, Where can I get this optic for 1,400-1,500$. Cheap as i can find it is1,850 scope alone..no caps or anything like that..thanks. Please respond.
please read the pinned comment. I meant used for that price, but I wasn't clear on that in the video. You might check the "for sale" forum on Sniper's Hide.
Just how would you rate the eye box on the tract? I'm looking t upgrade from my athlon midas tac 6-24x50. Reason being the eye box is very tight.
hmm good question. it gets tighter as you zoom in obviously, but I'm not sure how to quantify that for you.
I have the 6-24x50 Midas tac and the Toric ELR isn't as critical.
They seem to insinuate that some or all of the glass is german schott glass. Is that not the case? Or does it even matter that much?
German Schott and Japanese Hoya glass are usually very good.
Glass quality definitely matters.
Great review, do you think 4-25x50 better or 4.5-30x 56 ignoring the price difference please
Man I don't know. Probably splitting hairs there. Most people, most scenarios you'd never notice the difference.
I have this scope. And for my money the Vector Optics Continental scopes are better. Glass included.
Nice review thanks, do Tract scopes not have German schott glass?
Yes they use the German Schott HD glass on all TORIC line scopes
Yes. That was my mistake.
I want a scope that is stronger than a nightforce, more clear than a zero comp, lighter than a red dot, has a 1-100 magnification range, more compact than a vudu, but cost as much as a vortex strike eagle….
😂 exactly
So what would you consider a rated 10/10 scope in this price range?
I personally don't think you will find a 10/10 in any scope that costs less than $3500 dollars. And of course it's kind of subjective. People have different likes and perspectives. The Tract Toric is a very good optic, but there are some limitations.
Looks/feels very Cronus-y to me, since its from Japan I’m assuming its from LOW and similar spec to one. If its better in your opinion, Id say its a GREAT buy
Actually that’s a good point. It’s probably very similar to the chronus.
I have both and they are brothers from different mothers. The Toric ELR has the edge in image quality and has nicer turrets.
How would you compare this to the Nightforce NX8 4-32?
I think the glass in the Tract is brighter. Not necessarily better. Not sure on the internals.
With the price drop on the razor gen 2, would you take this over the razor ?
I personally would choose the razor.
The Toric is the better scope compared to the Razor 2.
I don’t have this tract but I do have the 4-20x50 30mm version and both 3-18 and 4.5-27 razors and I can say for my eyes the razor is the better scope. The warranty is what makes it worth the extra $$$, but the tract is not a bad scope and has even been 100 percent reliable. Vortex razor has better turret clicks but the tract does have good clicks but aren’t quite as crisp. Vortex glass has been brighter and better for low light but that’s mostly the 56mm vs 50mm objective. The razor 3-18 seems to be a little closer to the 4-20 but I like both and will still keep both.
Joel there are a lot of us old enough to be your dad. How about a video of scopes for old half blind geezers?
Would love to see your opinion on the newer ones with schott glass.
I'm pretty sure all generations from Tract have Schott glass. ?
Oh in the video you said it has Japanese glass I thought the schott glass was German?
@@jgsnipe1 you're right, I did say that. There's a pinned comment above where I stated my error the day I posted the video. Thanks.
Oh my bad I didn’t notice that! Awesome review I just ordered the 4-25 for my new custom 7mm rem mag.
Glass is NOT Japanese, it’s schott glass ( made in Germany ) division of Zeiss
The rest of it is made by low ( light optical works ) in Japan
yep thx. I pointed that out in the pinned comment.
For $1700 Nightforce NX8 it’s in class above
NF makes excellent products for sure.
I thought they were only direct so the price you see is what they go for? No “street price” as a result.
You’re right.
I need to be more clear with what i mean. Sorry.
I meant used ones, but I didn’t say that. 🤦🏻♂️
Tract has sales during the year during Memorial Day weekend and other holidays. Right now a few Tract products are 20% off (Black Friday) which ends on 28 November.
Toric or the Steiner T5xi ? Anything is better than this damn Arken optic I have but I dont want to make a mistake
in my opinion you can't go wrong with the Tract.
@@PrecisionRifleNetwork Thank you
@@rickm4295 what's your issues with the Arken? Been hearing great things about them. Maybe it's just the band wagon hyping them up.
Same issue with me for most scopes, the reticles are to thin these days, for my taste anyway.
Right. It’s annoying. A reticle is a calibrated measuring device, but I need to be able to see it in order to use it. lol
I actually prefer SFP reticles that won't disappear at the lower magnification settings. I replied to someone else regarding a SFP version of the Toric ELR under a different brand label on sale for $1050 that has an MSRP of $2755 sold at two solid legit companies.
Don't get me started! All the latest scopes have high zoom ratios (5-6x min-max ratio) and invariably the lower end range is unusable. Give me a 3x ratio, say 7-21x. It would cost less, have less complex internals and likely have better image due to fewer components.
The Meopta Optika6 with the Mrad1 reticle by DLO solved the low magnification FFP issue with a horseshoe in the center that can be seen at the lowest magnification.
The glass is not Japanese, it is Schott HD glass manufactured in Germany. The scope is made in Japan…..
Yep. Check description and/or pinned comment. I corrected it when I posted the video. Thx.
i just cant get with the chimney size turrets on these. I had one, and sold it.
yeah that's my least favorite thing as well
It’s not Japanese glass it’s Schott glass which is German. It’s assembled in Japan
Every blank maker has the access to the same formulas. There are 4 or 5 major makers. Saying it's shott glass means nothing as they have a wide variety of quality. They are then sent out to 1 of thousands of companies to turn them in to lenses. They are finished at the buying companies specs so again saying it's shott glass means nothing.
You’re right. I should have been more clear. I meant built in Japan.
@@PrecisionRifleNetwork how would you rank this scope compared to Leupold Mark 5 UHD and NightForce NX8? Thank you for the videos, I’ve learned so much! I was between those scopes for my 308, ended up going with the Tract 4x20 because didn’t feel I needed the extra magnification for my use
@@tracer353 I personally think the Leupold would be my pick, but the NF is excellent too. Honestly don’t think you could go wrong with any of these.
I thought this was German Schott glass not Japanese?
look at the pinned comment
The only thing I don’t like about this scope is the fact that the elevation turret is so gosh darn tall.
I completely agree
The elevation turret height, and the minimum 25yd parallax, tiny reticle on low power that disappears, is a HUGE deal breaker for me.
yes, I agree with all those points.
Think.ill stick with my athlon
Does the reticle get better on 30 power
Got old eyes to
German shott glass
yep I made the correction either in the description or the pinned comment the day I posted the video. thx.
No street price. Only sold by Tract
Correct. I made note of that in the pinned comment I believe. I just meant the price it goes for. I don’t really edit my videos for perfection. Figure people realize I’m kinda a bonehead sometimes.
Not Japanese glass, it's German Schott glass.
I clarified my errors in the pinned comment.
"Street Price" ?? um ....sold factory direct only
yep check the pinned comment
Is not Japanese glass, shouldn't be spreading missinformation in a review. Most people aren't going to be looking in the comments to see you made a mistake and justification for the price.
People aren’t robots.
2000 yards 6.5 cree with 8 mils? Can you give me your load plz 😂
perhaps you heard incorrectly? my 1000 yard data is probably around 8 mils with a 6.5CM. I'm not discounting my ability to screw things up occasionally, but that's not something I would say and mean it.
@@PrecisionRifleNetwork had to double check since I listened to this while driving home and yes I misheard 😁 all the other reviews Ive watched claim the scope uses Schott glass. Not that it actually matters, but curious about it since you claimed Japanese that who has the "correct" info
