@@HannahSmith-ud1ne There is an entire field dedicated to animal nutrition, and yes Hills has generally been recommended because they are a brand that has animal testing, unlike many common brands you will see on shelves. Veterinarians recommend brands with this seal of animal testing because it means the brand has put in time, resources, and energy into that testing amidst a market that has close to free reign on who can make pet food, slap a label on, and sell it (as long as they meet crude requirements which isn't much). I've personally met with representatives of both Hills and Royal Canin when I was in school and working as a veterinary technician. The representative from Hills was a guest speaker to teach our class on nutrition and the basic fundamentals and it was widely helpful. In no way am I excusing the recall claims against Hills, but I do want to get the point across that there needs to be more strict regulations in the pet food industry. I would at least like if the FDA would step foot in this process at all, because it's mind-boggling how much companies can earn easy money with close to no scientific or nutritional background.
Furthermore, while it isn't as "in-depth" as an entire course on pet nutrition, this is an easy-to-understand and remember bit of information I did learn that says a lot about a pet food brand just by the label alone. If a dog/cat food label says "[Beef] formula" it is roughly 25% of [beef]. If it states "Food WITH [beef]" the percentage of [beef] decreases to 3%. And lastly, if a label reads "[Beef] flavored food" you can assume that there is no [beef] at all, and it is all artificial. On the flip-side, there's many labels that have stated "[Beef] dog/cat food" which have generally turned out to be somewhere around 70% [beef] actually included in said food. Take everything with a grain of salt and pay attention.
My crazy life Maybe feeding foods with out the benefit of cooking.leads them find those nutrients from other places including digested “cooked” sources (poop).
Its frightening to know what these companies are really doing. I wish it were more widely known. I knew about it but when I mention it to people they just look blankly at me. Our animals deserve better
I stopped one year ago feeding my cats kibbles. now I give fresh fish and meat with eggshells, yolk, sesam. sometimes cooked meat with 10% rice or potatos.....
Okay, so for the most part, you've got the right idea about what to feed your cats. However, since cats are "obligate carnivores" you dont need to give them rice OR potatoes. In fact, you dont need to feed them anything except meat since they're incapable of getting nutrients from anything but.
My dog recently had trouble with his bowel movements and the vet emergency clinic we took him to gave him Hill's Pet Nutrition as a "tester food". Lucky, I always research on new brands before I try it and I heard about the recall. The vets proclaimed that it was a "newer, safe batch" even tho the serial number on the box and cans matched the recall number. Turns out that their main source of money was through selling the Hill's dietary plans to owners that didn't bother to look at what they were feeding their dogs. I don't even want to think about what could have happened to my dog if I hadn't looked it up :/
@@purplemonkey6775 We never bought the food, and he's better now. We took him to another facility and they did surgery on him, so he's feeling much better :)
Hey there. As an aspiring animal nutritionist, I love seeing these high quality educational videos being put out there. But I would love to see a bit more cat content from you! There's less information out there on cat nutrition, and I would love to see it better represented on your channel.
Thank you for uploading this video. Pet owners need to be aware of this! My dogs are on a raw diet but when they do have kibble it is either Nutro or Merricks which aren't made with by products or artificial crap. Highly recommend to those aren't sure what to choose. To those who really aren't sure, the raw diet has rid our dogs of allergies and they have tons of energy throughout the day.
I just started cooking my dogs food from scratch! It’s actually pretty cheap because I can buy veggies and eat the rest myself. Beef liver, turkey peas carrots broccoli sweet potatoes brown rice oats and crushed eggshells in the instant pot and then I portion it out per meal:) All that and I eat ramen noodles.
I do this too . . . but, I'm told there are specific nutrients that dogs need that are not in people grade foods . . . and some nitrates . . . etc in people grade food that dogs shouldn't have.
I have a German Shepherd with a sensitive stomach. I initially fed her California Natural and it was great, but then one day she got very sick. After an expensive visit to the vet, I learned that there was a recall due to contamination. I have sense switched to Orijen. It is “ruff-ly” the same cost and a way better product. She is now 14 yo. and I m convinced that she has made it this long due to the quality of her food. Just my 2 cents...
@@joanneholcombe735 Amazon or Hollywood Feed. I use the six fishes blend, and she is healthy, her coat is shiny, and she’s not constantly scratching from food allergies. It’s a high protein diet made for active dogs. Start with a small bag and transition over gradually. As someone who treats their dog as their child.. once you look into the ingredient list, you won’t go back.
I cook my dogs food in a crock pot. I fill it with chicken or turkey, broccoli, sweet potatoes, apples, spinach, pumpkin puree, green beans, etc. I don't use them all at once, just a combo of these and other fruits and vegetable that are good for terriers. I also give him fish and eggs. He's so much better happy now and it only costs me maybe $10/week or so. I freeze the majority and pull them out day to day. He used to just pick at his food when I was feeding him Nature's Recipe Grain Free small dog food with their wet food cups mixed in with the dry. Now he eats so fast I have to slow him down lol.
Purina has killed dogs for years and people say its still good dog food, if you look at Purina, Iams, and the other store dog foods lawsuits dated back before I was born was against them.
I took my new puppy to the vet because she was very tiny and lethargic. The vet kept telling me I needed to feed her royal canin, purina pro-plan, or science hill. I researched the foods and was appalled he recommended it so adamantly. Told me he knows better due to his $300,000 education. I feed my 2 year old border collie mix and 4 month catahoula hound mix(puppy version) instinct raw kibble and frozen bites. They do amazing on this food.
To think vets are recommending stuff like this and telling people they're killing their pets if they're feeding smaller, family owned brands. It's disgusting.
They get kick backs promotional's and of course commissions Even a Holistic Vet I go to recommended Royal Canin - a Veterinary formula Am Sure they are no better and They do not do any Nutrition for Health and so do not have a say in my view/book I have done hundreds of hours reading research (on multiple topics) and Dogs Like Humans are Compositionally Unique !!!!!!!!!!! I tweaked own words here I reckon...
I can guarantee Rodney has had more nutritional training than most vets. Vets don't get much nutritional training, and what they do get, it's done by Science Diet. It's still marketing.
Oh man the shit I had to go through with my initial vet because I feed a homemade raw diet. My little yorkie would go a couple of days without eating every now and then and I was really worried. Vet refused to run tests because they were SURE the problem was the bacteria in the meat I was feeding (meat that is contaminated with bacteria gets RECALLED BTW). Wound up in an emergency vet on the weekend ($$$$) and turned out she actually had pancreatitis. Which they could have found out for me IF THEY KNEW ANYTHING about dog nutrition.. Be smarter than me and start with a younger vet who has actually learned about raw diets...
Bout 8 years ago one of our senior dogs kept having seizures, and it wasn't due to a heart attack or stroke. Even the Vet said he wasn't having normal seizures. At that time my husband seen there was a recall on Purina Beniful, and we were giving our dog a different type of Purina Beniful. So we stopped with the food all ogether. He stopped having his seizures. We were dead determined his seizures was caused by that dog food.
I have fed raw to my Danes since 1996, I call Science Diet, Science Death. I also have some not so nice name changes for a few other brands you mentioned.
That's all my bulldogs get is raw feedings because of their allergies..the only treats they get is a piece of apple or a piece of carrot. They have never tasted a store bought treat.Their both 11 yrs.old and the vet said they look better than young bullies who come in that are so over weight.
I've been studying dog nutrition a bit and I worked as a dog trainer as Petco. Customers would repeatedly get offended at me telling them not to buy those brands and give healthy alternatives to buy instead. Also Blue Buffalo needs to be on this list as well for the high and insane recalls they have gotten and cases of pets dying on their food too. Just remember sometimes the pricier things for your pets are pricey for a reason. If you want good quality ingredients then you need to pay good quality prices; just as we do with our human groceries and produce. Also consider maybe introducing a partial raw diet or raw diet to your pet. Some thrive on it and some don't. And PLEASE do research and consult a vet who is experienced in Raw nutrition and feeding before doing so.
I tried to switch my dog to higher quality dog foods and she hated them all :( One even gave her really bad gastrointestinal problems and I thought I was gonna lose her. And yes I switched her over slowly. Now we are back on royal canin but I buy the sensitive digestion one which doesn’t have corn in the top 5 ingredients I guess it’s like trying to convince your kid to eat healthy food after feeding them McDonald’s their whole life
I had the same problem but I believe for us the problem was kibble in general, it was just that we started with more expensive kibble. I think he just struggles to digest Kibble. He did really well on the gastrointestinal Royal Canin canned wet and he is now on 50% gastrointestinal and 50% Canagan (grain-free) wet food and doing well. We should be going to 100% Canagan soon. We just use kibble as training treats.
If they have good gut health you don’t need to change foods slowly. Humans don’t eat the same thing every day. It’s suggested to switch up pet foods every few months. I randomly feed different foods on a daily basis. No problems.
If you're not calculating all the different levels of vitamins, minerals, calcium, phosphorus, etc, you could be doing more harm in the long run. Raw diets are great, but you really have to know what you're doing. I've seen too many people over the years do the same thing, only to cause serious irreversible damage to their pet. Plus, eating the same thing day in and day out actually leads to the animal building up an intolerance to those ingredients. You need to switch up the protein source, veggies, carbs, etc.
That’s why I make my dog homemade food, I use chicken, livers hearts etc, oats, just a little bit of rice not to much! Blend spinach, carrots and peas and cook together till it’s all cooked

I 100% believe that about Royal Canin. My vet recommended it and my dog wasn't crazy about it. It also made him scratch terribly. It has been touted as the best by my vet but my dog says....NOPE!
I was giving my dog a higher quality kibble (before that company sold out and began cheapening their ingredients.) My parents bought Beneful while I was away for two weeks and it gave my dog horrible yeast infections on his entire body. It was hell reversing it, seeing him so uncomfortable, as it took weeks to get rid of when we stopped using it and got him on a more natural diet.
Melinda Mercier That’s horrendous! Poor baby. I’ve had both my dogs on Beneful for the past 7 or 8 year and have never had any sort of reaction. Thank God.
Kibble and canned food is garbage no matter how you look at it. Every other person I know has had a pet die from cancer or organ failure. It's better to get some recipes and prepare the food yourself with human grade ingredients. It ends up being cheaper and you won't have to shell out thousands of dollars for vet visits every time they get sick.
Except not all of us have the money to buy enough ingredients for a weeks worth of raw food for a dog. Hell, I can barely afford to feed myself. Also, a dog can be on a kibble diet and still be healthy.
@strawberry_shortcake4life no, unless you don't know how to handle raw meat and bones and kiss you dog after meal time. Dog's immunity is way stronger than some wimpy salmonella :)))
I started my daughters on Pedigree Puppy, but I could tell they didn't love it. Saw how much they loved canned cat food, so added canned fish and chicken, noticed improvement. Was gifted a cheaper, less popular grain free kibble, and they loved it! Had no problem switching, noticed great improvements in overall health, appearance... even their poop looked better! Researched (out of love) and learned how bad most kibble is, started cooking/feeding them real meat, eggs, and veggies, now they're healthier than ever with no problems. They no longer steal eggshells from the compost because they're no longer lacking any nutrients. Our pets should eat better than us. Kibble is crap and needs stricter standards.
I've fed my dogs pedigree for years. If you look at the list of recalls it's had, you will only find about 3 in existence and the newest I believe was the 2014 mentioned. Compared to the other foods I consider it much safer and my dogs have never gotten sick from it. Purina is the number one brand that I will NEVER trust, I'll tell you that much. Please never give your dogs anything Purina. My aunt's dog got so sick from it too. The long list of recalls for so many of it's products should be enough to keep you away.
I used to live right down the road from a diamond dog food plant and they had a train that came thru the plant grounds and they would leave train cars full of the dog food just sitting outside and you could smell it for miles.
Actually cooked bones could shatter and hurt your dog, you should be giving your dog the chicken raw its easier for their stomach to digest it raw and its healthier for them
*Please DON'T* feed your dogs raw chicken 😣🤦♀️. The same reason it's dangerous for humans is the same reason for dogs. If you've spoken to a veterinarian, and under *their* guidance decide to give raw meat, stick to things like beef. Is it really worth the risk to your dog? They can't choose what to eat each day, they rely completely on us to safely feed them. So don't be an asshole and play Russian roulette with their food. Gamble with your own diets, not theirs.
How is cooked meat bad for dogs? That's what's in dog food. Raw isn't necessarily easier to digest than cooked either. It depends on the dog. Definitely never feed cooked bones, but cooked meat is good
i swapped off of Ol'Roy dog food like 8 years ago. after swapping off that and to Kirkland adult dog food i noticed a huge difference in my dogs behavior and she seemed to act a lot better and just seemed healthier.
I use Pedigree dog food and have for 20 years have had 6 dogs over that span and have never had a problem with them. Further more they have pet adoptions to help strays wonder how many non AKC you have just curious have a blessed day😐😶😑
I use “NOW fresh” and “Canidae” for my babies. They list every single ingredient - NOW fresh does so in pictures even - and my babies thrive. Vet says they’re some of the healthiest pups he’s seen. Only better diet he said is a raw food diet but that can be a risk depending on where you source your ingredients.
I've seen one vet be the biggest damn sellout I've ever seen. Royal Canin and Hills Science propaganda everywhere. Their posters literally make zero logical sense like saying that dogs actually NEED corn and grains. Like, what?
My dogs did VERY WELL on Victor brand Dog food. I always got the Performance or the Hero formulations for them because they were large working dogs and those formulations had ingredients for long term joint health.
its price is decent too! For a raw brand anyway. JUST MAKE SURE you have their supplements to go along with it. Their food is not balanced without them
For hills science diet was it just CANNED food that was recalled? is the kibble still good? I've been giving my doggo hills science diet kibble as recommended by her vet
Fresh pet has mold issues because its real food without preservatives. Food gets moldy if its left for too long, check expiration dates and let the store know if you ever find any because it means they aren't changing the fridges fast enough. I've personally never had that problem with fresh pet, we get the bag food, and you can see it all in there, and I've never had this problem, but I also always check the expiration
I’ve emailed freshpet multiple times saying the refrigerators that the food is kept in doesn’t keep the food cool enough. I checked temps and all have been higher then 40 degrees
Glad I feed my little Cooper 'The Farmer's Dog'. It's expensive as all heck, but he loves it and I can actually see the ingredients. Only the best for my best friend! 🤗❤️🐶🐾
Idk I have four dogs, my oldest is 10. They have been on pedigree since being off their moms nipple. They are healthy and striving well. Plus I've never found metal in their food. Js

Thankfully because of reports like this, many of us have learned that it is better to make your own dog food. Not hard!! Common sense and a little research. Not costly and healthier pets. I have found my Samoyed is allergic to chicken. So I make a standard recipe of 3 lbs Ground beef, 1 package calves liver, 2 cans salmon with skin and bones, 1 can sweet potatoes, 1 can green beans, organic kelp, cranberry, bone meal (or cottage cheese or powdered milk if I don't have) and 4 eggs with shells (ground in blender). I also feed sardines for treats a few times a week. And I'll buy the Stella & Chewy's raw rabbit to feed occasionally. Frozen plain yogurt with ground ginger is given nightly as a treat and for gut health. I'd love to hear Rodney's feedback on this. My vet asked me if I was a nutritionist (sort of sarcastically) and this after telling me my dogs blood workup results were the best she has seen on an 11 year old dog. Same thing her ophthalmologist said about her eyes. So I must be doing something right.
That looks like a nice recipe! Do you freeze it or cook it? If I may make a suggestion, you could also add other innards/ organs than liver to get even better nutrient content (and most of them are cheap to buy). Spleen, kidney, hearth, lung...of course the fish might contain some of these, esp if it is not gutted. We buy a frozen, complete raw food for our puppy (I wanted to make sure the calcium/phosphorous rate was ok, when she's older we'll be making our own). Here's the ingredients, if you're interested: Beef 35 % (meat, heart, stomach, liver, cartilage), Reindeer 35 % (meat, bones, lung, cartilage), Salmon 22 % (whole Salmon with bones), Vegetables and Oils 8 % (Broccoli, Salad, Apple, Carrot, cold pressed sunflower seed oil, flax seed oil).
@@emmamemma4162 I cook in a crock pot for five hours on low. You can feed raw if you want. I freeze what I don't use in a week. You are right about the other organ meat. I can only buy liver at my local grocery, but hearts would be good too. They only sell chicken hearts which I put in my homemade cat's food, but my dog is allergic to chicken.
@@Kasonas What a bummer about the organ meats, hope you'll find a way to get them cheaply and easily (whole fish?)! We feed raw for meals but kibble for training. Cooking might be a nice alternative for making healthy, tasty training treats (we go through lots of training treats, so they need to be balanced and contain everything she needs). I might need to use the oven to make something that is a little bit dryer, but I'll probably make something similar to your recipe.
@@emmamemma4162 That sounds great! Glad you are feeding your dog healthy!! We've seen so many dogs which younger than mine have cancer and I think it's because of the diet they're eating, which is the commercial food. and even if it's not the food I think by feeding them healthy like we are, it keeps their immune system strong so they can fight off diseases and cancers.
@@Kasonas Thanks :) It's tricky since there aren't that many studies on what dogs should be eating, but I'll (literally) put my money on meat, bones, innards and some veg/small amounts of other stuff for variety. Great video! A lot of people don't listen when I try to tell them how bad these brands are. Especially the ones their vets recommend - Royal Canin and Hills. Terrible!
My best dog friend died 2 years ago. I gave him Ol Roy because of the soft bits. One day he started going into convulsions, excessive drooling, and he was scared. He was shaking bad. This went on for a few weeks every other day. Then he lost the use of his back legs When slowed down drinking and and eating. I knew it was a matter of time before you take him in. One day it was so bad. He wouldn't move for hours. I took a nap with him one more time. Ultimately, I took him in and played "knockin in heavens door" 5 times. A few after he passed. Ol Roy is owned by a large conglomerate company that owns many brands we use everyday. Ol Roy, dunkin donuts and pillsbury are owned by the same corporation. Do you think the Rachel Ray dog food is as good as its said to be? My dog with grain allergies didn't have any issues with the grain free formula and its cheaper than his custom food but worried about the issues so many brands have apparently
Anyone reading this I've done a lot of research on cat food. The best brands in my opinion are.. Orijen (Best in my opinion) Fromm (Good quality $ fairly priced) Open Farm (Most expensive but great quality) Ziwi Peak (Good wet food) Stella and Chewy's (Good wet food) I think these brands also are available for Dogs. Don't waste your money on cheap crap for your pets. They deserve better. Iams actually gave my dog extremely bad stomach issues. She has diarrhea at the moment and is extremely gassy. Right now I’m giving her rice, chicken and peas to hopefully calm her stomach down a bit before we switch her back to the food she was eating before. Apparently a lot of other people are having a similar problem with iams where their dogs are vomiting and constantly pooping. I am also sure that iams has yeast in it which yeast is really, really bad for dogs but I might have to read the ingredients again.

I'd rather see a video of pet food that is nutritious and safe.

I don't even want to think about what could have happened to my dog if I hadn't looked it up :/
Is he ok now your dog?

I do the same for my Whippet. He's very fit.
Why not eliminate the middleman and give the Bitch and/or Son of a Bitch a Pregnant Hen, Turkey?

Just my 2 cents...

Great video. Thanks for the helpful info!

I tried to switch my dog to higher quality dog foods and she hated them all :(
One even gave her really bad gastrointestinal problems and I thought I was gonna lose her. And yes I switched her over slowly.
Now we are back on royal canin but I buy the sensitive digestion one which doesn’t have corn in the top 5 ingredients
I guess it’s like trying to convince your kid to eat healthy food after feeding them McDonald’s their whole life
Try fish 4 dog, barking head or symply, all this really good product

She needs bones and organs too, not just muscle meat. Brains, hearts, eyes, livers, etc.
Omg literally the fresh pet is so bad!! I would feed my doggo those and she would always throw up :(
I was about to start our puppy off on that too!
Omg I have that in my fridge :(

Very informative! Thank you!
I'm not feeding my future dog with food that is this low quality.
Please add alternatives
Raw diet is a good alternative to both cats and dogs
Agreed on the Raw Diet.
Except not all of us have the money to buy enough ingredients for a weeks worth of raw food for a dog. Hell, I can barely afford to feed myself. Also, a dog can be on a kibble diet and still be healthy.
@strawberry_shortcake4life Yup

Thanks for the video. Surprising how man trust brands are on the list. I guess I will start making my own for my pet.
I used to live right down the road from a diamond dog food plant and they had a train that came thru the plant grounds and they would leave train cars full of the dog food just sitting outside and you could smell it for miles.
Thank you for this information. Never used any of these products.
Yeah I'll just go back to cooking for my dog , regular cooked chicken is healthy for them anyway
Actually cooked bones could shatter and hurt your dog, you should be giving your dog the chicken raw its easier for their stomach to digest it raw and its healthier for them
Cooked chicken (or any cooked meat) is actually really bad for your dog
But please make sure you don't feed only chicken ok? They need wayy more
*Please DON'T* feed your dogs raw chicken 😣🤦♀️.

Here's the ingredients, if you're interested:
Beef 35 % (meat, heart, stomach, liver, cartilage), Reindeer 35 % (meat, bones, lung, cartilage), Salmon 22 % (whole Salmon with bones), Vegetables and Oils 8 % (Broccoli, Salad, Apple, Carrot, cold pressed sunflower seed oil, flax seed oil).
Make your own meal 👍
Scoobs_Motovlogs it’s time consuming but well worth it at least you know what’s in the food your pet is eating. Rice gave my dog seizures
My father used to feed his dog cooked ground beef along with his kibble food. That dog stank all the time. Baths would not wash the smell away. I started feeding him Blue Buffalo when I took the dog and the smell went away in less than a month!
That’s great! Even though more expensive up front, think of the saving of money and less pet chronic disease and vet bills.
We are on a budget on in general lately things be hard, so what brands are not expensive and good for dogs?
u pay for what u get.. tbh
I love Canidae, wellness, and instinct. All three about $65 for a 24 lb bag. They're all pretty good foods, but paying less is going to get you a lower quality dog food.
Ruler Foods /Kroger has dog food at good price. My dog like it better than expensive stuff.
Are used to buy fresh pet chop it up and I never saw any mould your green stuff in it. But I don’t buy it anymore. I haven’t bought it for years. But when I did, I use a chop it up really fine and I never saw any green stuff in it or multi stuff in it. Maybe now I can see a lot of stuff being bad in a lot of stuff that dogs eat and what we eat.
Orijen (Best in my opinion)
Fromm (Good quality $ fairly priced)
Open Farm (Most expensive but great quality)
Ziwi Peak (Good wet food)
Stella and Chewy's (Good wet food)
I think these brands also are available for Dogs.
Don't waste your money on cheap crap for your pets. They deserve better. Being on a budget can be tricky when you can't afford certain products but in the end, you'll save more money buying the more expensive food vs a big vet bill you'll get for the poor quality food you're feeding your pets.
Unconscionable!
I'm using Ishkan salmon SOFT dry food from Korea. They are using premium ingredients. A little bit expensive but worth it.
My personal favorite is wildology at my local d&b supply. My dogs look great and have had such a good boost of energy, plus their coat feels so nice and they never get an upset stomach on it and my rotty has a very sensitive stomach
2019 is the worst years ever
You do know these are reports from past years right?
xD
HAHAHAHAHAHA you thought.
i used to feed beneful when i first got my dog because i didn’t know much about the pet food industry but i now feed authority and will probably feed nutro or american journey in the future
do you know what makes beneful bad? the video didnt really elaborate very well :/
@@monke2229 unhealthy ingredients.
