    New Order's version of Ceremony is great but it's so sad that Ian never got a proper recording of this amazing song

    I dreamt of this song and woke up in tears. I hadn’t heard it in years but I loved Joy Division and New Order so much in the early 80s when I was young. Now I’m moved to revisit these bittersweet masterpieces.

      New Order is touring now with Pet Shop Boys. If the show is anything like last year's show they do an amazing encore of Joy Division songs. It's easy to see how much they love Ian and miss him.

    Ian's lyrics is good, but man is the music amazing. This is why I never forget about these guys. Sure Ian was the driving force, but without his band members, I don't think Ian could have showed the world his talent. He simply found the best band mates ever.

    Been listening to this band for 30 years, this is one of their great live performances. All this is Rock History now. I love the raspy, gravelly sound Bernard gets here, its an important stage when the electric guitar "twang" goes "sonic" and "feedback" seems to become a kind of harmony!. .. . Peter Hook found the right answer for all this too, his thrashing bassline is truly innovative, really powerful , as everybody knows. Bernard isn't really the vocalist that Ian was, of course, not the performer and showman that Ian was either. But his technique was original, no question about it. Both of them, plus their indispensable Producer (of course!) are what make the 2 Albums of Joy Division the real origin of "art rock". No one, not the Beatles or the Stones or the Smiths or the Cure, or whoever, can match those two albums for musical enfluence. . .to say nothing of Gillian (so focused and steady) and Steve (amazing and indefagible). . .Ian's lyrics show the enfluence of the English poetry he loved, like Wordsworth. The Eternal, for example. Among so many other things this band's traditional English folk heritage is obvious. June Tabor's version of Love Will Tear Us Apart Again, for example, wow!

      I couldn't agree more. In particular, with your comment 'I love the raspy, gravelly sound Bernard gets here, its an important stage when the electric guitar "twang" goes "sonic" and "feedback" seems to become a kind of harmony!' I listen to this video on loop because I love this sound so much ( ... I'm serious).

    Bernie has done a great job in his own way over the years and has never even tried to replace Ian in any way.
    It was great when after many years they started playing the Joy Division songs again.....superb.

  • @NehemiahRyan
    @NehemiahRyan 16 років тому +1

    yes and no, to our question. The answer is yes it's a guitar effect called Chorus. No because it's a bass played really high up on the neck, giving it the distinct sound. Lots of the early 80s "new wave" bands played the bass this way: The Police, The Cure, The Clash, Delta 5, Talking Heads

    After hearing Radiohead's cover, I really think this performance by New Order is FANTASTIC. The cover is respectful of the original, but this performance just brings it to another level of greatness. For some reason, New Order is musically superior even when it doesn't look like they're doing anything extraordinary.

    First of, New Order's debut album was Movement, released in 1981 only one year and a few months after the demise of Joy Division. Second, the song was written by Joy Division and the lyrics by Ian Curtis, the band's lead singer.

    I liked seeing Radiohead cover this and the Smiths song. The Smiths albums and singles have always been and still are on regular rotation for me because I like the songs and they are still good. If my band wanted to cover their songs I would be happy to play and sing songs that I have always liked at full volume having a good time. I think that is what Radiohead was doing, paying tribute, and they did it well. Being snobby about it is missing the point.

    Dude, take it easy with the name calling. I'm not hating on Barney's skills. He's one of my favorite guitar players and singers. But this is a statement Barney himself has made several times. It's the reason Gillian was brought into the band. You'll notice that live he plays more on the parts where he doesn't sing, especially on "Ceremony." Or watch "The Perfect Kiss" video. Also, read the liner notes to the Retro boxset. He talks more than once about his difficulties singing and playing

    I would say that Ian Curtis was at most 30% of Joy Division. He was an excellent lyricist and he did the vocal melodies. He was was an extraordinary performer. The rest did the music that is a big part of the Joy Division sound. When they because New Order, the dynamic changed, but IMO the band was as good as Joy Division up until their temporary split in 1993. The more recent New Order is not quite as constant musically and innovative as they used to.

    I disagree, but musical taste is subjective. I was a JD and NO fan back in the day, and now 20+ years later, it is the JD songs that dominate my Ipod. To me, the NO songs were good, of the moment, but the JD songs are more timeless.
    Ceremony, however, is one of the greatest songs ever, and this is a fantastic live version.
