This is great stuff. I laughed when you rolled down the window and wound the car up in the tunnel, I do the same thing. I am about to rebuild the suspension in my own MR2 and these videos are a great resource. Thank you so much!
Good sir... I've got nearly 2 decades of AW11 ownership under my belt and I am absolutely happy to share my knowledge. TwosRUs has a lot of parts for the AW11 included upgraded drop links (end links). These are made by a company called High & Tight. I had to get these as I bent 3 of my 4 original end links. The High & Tight endlinks not only stood up to my less than gentle driving through canyons, but also had no issues with handling the couple times that I jumped my AW11. I also ran Koni Yellow struts and Eibach ProKit springs, but also had the full TRD bushing kit, front & rear strut braces and Suspension Techniques front and rear anti-roll bars.
haha ... my vision is off, don't have my glasses on; I read that at first as a troll, then for a moment thought ToysRUs legitimately stocked MR2 parts for a few moments; maybe a suite owned one :p I'm trying to learn about them. Wanted one as a teen but ended up getting into RX-7s and forgot how bad I wanted one. Almost bought one, but my father wouldn't let me get it. 60k $3000, from someone who was passionate about Toyotas ... Its all dreams because of health; but looking for sources of in depth/detailed information. My searches end up with mostly non-informative youtube fluff and threads in forums where people are bickering. @@zakuraayame5091 The AW11 is not a car for everyone, nor most people. They are louder than most cars because the powerplant is right behind your head, they are wildly impractical due to the lack of available storage space, and I would guess that 99.999% of drivers on the road would not take the time to learn the weight balance of a vehicle that does not have the engine in the front of the vehicle which could result in spinning the car around in less than ideal weather conditions. The MKIa (85-86) are far less forgiving than the MKIb (87-89) as the latter had a revised rear suspension that helped to negate some of the rotation tendencies (lift off oversteer / snap oversteer). The MKII and MKIII are even more forgiving compared to the MKI due to the overall longer wheelbase. The lack of power steering is another factor as anything below 15mph results in the steering being very heavy, with the trade-off of speeds above 15mph, the steering is incredibly precise and responsive (not nervous or twitchy). The engine bay is not a difficult one to work inside of, especially as this is not a Nissan 300ZX or similar. Sadly, trying to find replacement parts will only get more difficult as the years go on. It would be truly wonderful if Toyota would remake a large batch of the critical parts every 5 years, just to help keep them going. I do understand the chance of that happening is slim to none.
@@not12listen while older, I had a few RX-7s; one, I removed the PS belt and liked the extra tension. I would appreciate a proper manual rack ... its ratio and not pushing against the hydralics. I had a CRX about 10 years ago I didn't take up to highway speeds before buying it; it was very loud, droning, and geared so it was screaming at 4k at 65 iirc. I'm in the mindset that I can make it work, understanding there will be searching, researching, and fabrication needed. A 3D printer would also be beneficial; using 3D programs can create non-critical parts, prototype others. I think the problems with the MR2 are overstated, just like rotary reliability issues. Proper tires, suspension tuning, and mindful driving, practicing, gaining skill in safe areas are all part of it. Here are some things I have found might help if getting one: tires; you can go 205/50R15 F 225/50R15 R; reduce rear sway, increase front sway slightly softer suspension in rear. assure all bushings/components in good condition Every car has its drawbacks. I'm used to rare vehicles or engines. Less than 40k CR-Zs exist iirc. Rotaries are in one vehicle. I owned a 70s car there happened to be less than 1200 made. What is worse, owning something special it takes a bit of your time to take care of ... or driving another corolla for 30k and wonder what that 30k could've done to anything you actually cared about?
First let me start off by saying your knowledge is very good. Secondly, I love that you have a channel dedicated to the AW11 MR2. Lastly, Twos RUS also offers drop links for the AW11's here in the US.
Looks like you are having fun over there, where ever that may be? Beautiful scenery! I just got some roll Center ball joints I’m looking forward to installing on my DC5.
In my head I always thought these were one of the only common parts between the AW11 and the SW20. I’m pretty sure these will solve my current issue as well. Nice review. Thank you.
Hey my friend. I would absolutely love a video explaining suspension tuning. Stuff to cover would be, why stiffer springs are beneficial or stiffer anti roll bars. How alignment adjustments affect drive characteristics. How height and tire size or offset change drive ability. Just an idea!
That was very interesting and enjoyable, in fact very satisfying since there is a happy ending. I can never resist good news of any kind so the fact that I don't own an AW11 is immaterial. Yay!
I've had nothing but trouble from these. First time I got them the threads were full of swarf and completely messed up which I had to buy a tap to clean them with. When installing them the bolt sheered when being torqued to factory settings and when finally on the car the front ones came loose constantly and rubbed against the body work of my car leaving considerable damage (and I had installed them the way they are installed in this video.) I tried asking Andrew, the creator of these, how he installed them and he said he would respond to me within a week. it has been months of radio silence, apart from the fact he still uploads to Instagram and posts stories of what beers he drinks. I feel completely scammed out of the money I gave him and have actually been better off buying a set of drop links by searching for them using measurements rather than looking for a set specific to the car.
Honestly I don’t see why more people have done this over the years. Just take the measurements they need. And maybe post the ones they used lol. Anyone? Lol
My AW11 didn't come with a rear anti-sway bar. I researched the merits of using one and the general consensus was that it was not worth it for the daily driving car that it was for me. Your MR2 sure sounds tasty!
Maybe for a daily driver you don’t want full race spec “beefy” sway bars, but I think it is nice to have at least OEM style both front and rear installed. You will notice the stability improvement over not having anything and, in general, ride comfort does not become a whole lot worse.
I love ya man! That was ages ago. He's starting a website now where he'll be selling all sorts of ultra rare stuff. Check him out on IG if you haven't already.
The front ones are definitely too short. You can see the sway bar being pulled upwards as the suspensión compresses instead of being twisted as it should. Another question is why did you made that rear DIY drop links so long? Does not sway bar angle theoretically have to be parallel to the ground when suspension is at ride height? I have found myself a lot of times in that situation of not finding the right parts or the oem ones are very expensive and/ or doesn’t fit when the car is modified. Is always great to have at least a small group of enthusiasts that make good quality parts for cars that aren’t mainstream. Keep up with your videos, I enjoy watching them a lot.
I have to say you can't beat the OEM drop links. I was sick of replacing them in my Honda after each track day or just road driving. Dam the OEM ones were so expensive, but I'd already spent that price on millions of crap aftermarket ones
