Omg!!! I remember holding my little cassette tape recorder up to my mom/dad's tv in the 80's & recording this. You know, with the orange record button. 😂 I was like 12, I'm now 45 . Still in love with JT.
OMG! First heard this on a cassette tape in "82 when I was 10 years old! Didn't even know if it was DD for sure! Now it's 2021, I'm 48 years old and CRYING wishing to be young again! I have watched the video of Cockney Rebel's original version of this song and DD HIT IT OUT OF THE PARK! HOME RUN!!! DD's version is much better! More energy!
You've done it all, you've broken every code And pulled the rebel to the floor You spoilt the game, no matter what you say For only metal, what a bore! Blue eyes, blue eyes How come you tell so many lies? Come up and see me, make me smile Or do what you want, running wild There's nothing left, all gone and run away Maybe you'll tarry for a while It's just a test, a game for us to play Win or lose, it's hard to smile Resist, resist It's from yourself, you have to hide, oh Come up and see me to make me smile, oh Or do what you want, running wild There ain't no more, you've taken everything From my belief in Mother Earth Can you ignore my faith in everything 'Cause I know what faith is and what it's worth Away, away And don't say maybe you'll try To come up and see me to make me smile Or do what you want just running wild Come up and see me, make me smile Or do what you want, running wild Come up and see me
A friend of mine posted a You Tube clip of Come Up and See Me (Make Me Smile)... and it completely took me back to a casette recording of the same song covered by Duran Duran from 1982 that my penpal in the UK sent me. Had to look it up. OMG. So many times on repeat to now see this with my own eyes. I love the times we live in.
I used to love this band. We used to go to their houses (Nick and John) every weekend in the hope of meeting them. Their parents must have been so sick of us. But they were always charming. We helped Nick's mum in with the shopping once as we got to know her, and got Nick's Auntie Pat's autograph when she was there once.
I love, love, love this clip. Thanks for sharing. I would love to be able to jump in a time machine and be at this show. To those who were there, tell us about it - we'd love to hear!!
Went to their first tour in 1981 when they played the Liverpool Royal Court and again for this tour in '82 at the Liverpool Empire. I remember this song so vividly, they played it as an encore and it was the first time I'd heard it. All these decades later and it's still a brilliant cover - Always loved the girl at 4:52!
i discovered this one on a duran album i found in D.C. back in the early 80's fell in love w it as all of their songs... was pleasantly surprised when it was on the movie Threesome sound track... now that i have. teen who went "durany" over 1 direction she understands why i still love D2!
Underated? With a keyboard player unable to play a simple chord or play with two hands... Every sounds recorded.... They were 4 musicians and a incompetent one.
You could easily nominate this one of the single greatest cover songs of all time. They did such a damned good job, it might as well be their own. This would be a really nice treat to throw in as an occasional special encore on the next tour.
LustingSvenska I know exactly how your mum felt, Recapturing happy times from your youth through music is so powerful and personal. I was very touched by this story bless you for giving her back a special moment in time.
That's exactly what happens to me each time I listen to one of their songs, isn't it magical?, DD is such a powerful drug no matter how old I am, I'll never quit on them, tell me how wonderful it is to have that feeling, to have something that instantly makes you smile from the bottom of your heart, sth that takes you back in time, the best" beauty anti age treatment" you can have!!
@LustingSvenska I'm right there with ur mother!! I was a HUGE Duranie "back in my day" (I'm almost 40 now) And I 1st heard this song when I was in 7th grade & feel in love with it & them!!! They were my 1st concert when I was 12, & I get to see them finally again in Oct!!! They still make me smile & bring a tear of nastalgic joy to my eyes!!
greatest time ever.. they must have done this song a lot back home, their fans knew it,or they remembered the original even though it was a very different version
I get so emotional when I see John up there playing bass and singing!!!

This song means a lot to me... God dammit... Steve Harley´s version cannot of course not be used as comperance to anything... But Duran Duran made it really "Duranic" and me luuuuved a lot...
I've changed many things. Many things have changed me. But when. i consider me, and all that I am and have become or will be again. Through it all, at the core of it; I am still a duranie💓
ahhhh adore the original Cockney Rebel version! (even though they were never big here in the States) -- but had no idea Duran Duran covered it! love how the audience goes nuts with recognition too :)
@LustingSvenska I think that is one of the loveliest comments I have ever read. Also very true. I have been a fan sine I was 12. I saw them for the first time in July 09 and I am going again in May. I dont imagine they will play this, which is a real shame. It was a B side to The Reflex, and a cover of an original song by Cockney Rebel. But they make it their own and they sound amazing. Duran Duran were my Beatles. They defined a time of my life.
Duran Duran this is there most earliest song performances to date. this was done at the Rum Runner in Birmingham England in the early 80's and its one of there best! Duran Duran this is there most earliest song performances to date. this was done at the Rum Runner in Birmingham England in the early 1980's
@LustingSvenska I'm really touched by reading your words! I'm also a mom like yours, and every time I watch a video of Duran Duran drops a tear on my face, and I remember the good old days ... thank you, bye!
Better, WAY BETTER, than the original! More of everything! Duran Duran is one of the greatest song writing, musically inspiring bands ever!! Absolutely awesome! And so very young at this time! WOW!!
I went to an all girls school where it was divided between (us) Duranies and (them) Whamies. I was besotted with Nick Rhodes and would dress like him and have my hair the same styles as his, we always got hassle from the Wham fans who would always say Nick was gay.. so guess who got egg on their faces when George came out!! lol
@russell0769 I so agree with you! They were my Beatles as well! I saw them for the first time at 14 in 1984 and them again many times throughout the years! I even went to see them while I was about 6 months pregnant and my husband surprised me with 5th row seats! I swear John Taylor winked at me and rubbed his belly!!! My daughter cam very close to being named Rio! hahaha! This video can still bring tears to my eyes!!!
I can't get enough of this clip! This song was off my radar for so long, what a treat to see this performance! I think I also saw it performed at one of the Atlantic City shows in 2005 but not sure which one.
youuu ... made me cry !! thanks for your words and your love for your mommy !! i'm 42 years old and DD are still so great for me... Is a matter of feeling !!
actually the reflex and the other mainstream DD songs like hungry like the wolf ,union of the snake ,wild boys and is there something i should know i really don't listen to as often as the songs that weren't released on radio or had much "radio play" to me the ones that weren't released are the real master pieces
I helped coach at bobby sox team in Irvine, CA and all the girls 12-14 year olds, used to come around my '69 Stang ragtop and listen to Duran Duran, back in the day and talk about the guys. .
As far as cover versions go, this is right up there with Roxy Music's Jealous Guy. It helps when your band has a really kick-arse rhythm section, and Duran Duran totally own this song now. Perfecto!
good lordie, I had the record years ago and lost it somewhere in the house, never thought I would - well the missus really -hear this again, so good, missing Andy Taylor...
Still gives me goosebumps after all these years! I always wished they had done a studio version of this.
they did! B-side of "The Reflex," i beleive
slugluv1313 😮is there a digital version?
@@TrippingOverParadise oh gosh there MUST be! maybe check the Duran Duran website?
@@slugluv1313 it's this same live version. They never did studio version unfortunately. ( Same happened with live Melting Pot's Culture Club.)
This does not come close to Harley singing it live or otherwise.
Omg!!! I remember holding my little cassette tape recorder up to my mom/dad's tv in the 80's & recording this. You know, with the orange record button. 😂 I was like 12, I'm now 45 . Still in love with JT.
I did exactly the same thing!!!!!!!!!!! I still have it!!
😍🤣🎶🎵🎶 JT, the best Duranie!
And cutest
Love it!!
Good times
I did the same thing! LOVED this and was so in love with John Taylor. He was just the sexiest!
what's this "WAS a Duranie" I STILL am and STILL proud
OMG! First heard this on a cassette tape in "82 when I was 10 years old! Didn't even know if it was DD for sure! Now it's 2021, I'm 48 years old and CRYING wishing to be young again! Good cover great respect for duran duran love always
I was raised on Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel. Only just found this and I was pleasantly surprised, it's really good!
Russell Webster b side of The Reflex
I didn't know it was a cover for ever... no I know why it wan't ever put on an album!
You've done it all, you've broken every code
And pulled the rebel to the floor
You spoilt the game, no matter what you say
For only metal, what a bore!
Blue eyes, blue eyes
How come you tell so many lies?
Come up and see me, make me smile
Or do what you want, running wild
There's nothing left, all gone and run away
Maybe you'll tarry for a while
It's just a test, a game for us to play
Win or lose, it's hard to smile
Resist, resist
It's from yourself, you have to hide, oh
Come up and see me to make me smile, oh
Or do what you want, running wild
There ain't no more, you've taken everything
From my belief in Mother Earth
Can you ignore my faith in everything
'Cause I know what faith is and what it's worth
Away, away
And don't say maybe you'll try
To come up and see me to make me smile
Or do what you want just running wild
Come up and see me, make me smile
Or do what you want, running wild
Come up and see me
All about the break up of the original Cockney Rebel
I loved The Reflex so much when it came out in 1985. And then one day I just flipped the side. And WOW.
came out in 1984 in the uk
the Reflex came out April 1984 in Germany
"The Reflex" came out in Hong Kong in 1984. Cheers~
My band 4 ever. English and 50... these guys remind me of my happy youth in my beloved UK
Awesome cover of this tune .. Duran Duran's music will live on forever .
This song is my happy place.
I am so sad! This is my band. English and proud but never seen them play! You will always be my boys. Love d 4 ever and beyond

80s was the best decade for music no other can beat it
The 80,s are my favourite decade but i think this song has been ruined.awful.the original is so much better.
60's
@@dawnjenniferclark4464 Yep, 60s, 70s and 90s were better than the 80s, but the 80s did have its moments!
💯
Con este tema ...Me hice fans de duran duran para rosa la vida

Love the fantastic bass on this and John's backing vocals....overall a superb version of the original. Lindylou
Andy blows me away on lead guitar 😎
Look at John, OMG! Iconic.💖
He's singing great and playing amazing. Total icon!

RIP Steve Harley 17/3/24
Was at this show unforgettable to this day......
i love the energy of this.......it just captures the 'duran can do No wrong' magical peak of their first half of the 80's
Duran Duran covering your song? Ultimate respect
One of my most favorite Duran performances ever!
Duran Duran deserves to be in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame!
Holy crap this song rocks. I thank you for sharing it, as I had never seen this before. Love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i discovered this one on a duran album i found in D.C. back in the early 80's fell in love w it as all of their songs... was pleasantly surprised when it was on the movie Threesome sound track... now that i have. teen who went "durany" over 1 direction she understands why i still love D2!
Most underated band in history. Simon was so worried about pitch, yet he was great.
Underated? With a keyboard player unable to play a simple chord or play with two hands... Every sounds recorded.... They were 4 musicians and a incompetent one.
great song for a great cover , thanks Duran Duran

Love this song one of their best, how it JUST KIX IN!!
The early 80s was great for music and being a Duran Duran fan. Andy left DD and DD were never the same.
I totally agree.
I got to hear this live when they toured Adelaide, South Australia. Absolutely awesome
May be my fav live performance of this song. Perfect!
Memories !! ❤lyrics still there in my head - ooh la la la !! ❤awesome !! Love this & them!!! 🎉te amo Por siempre !

Julie Wilson wow!!! Lucky you x
what marvelous!!!!!
I was there the night they brought Steve Harley on stage. No one knew who he was.
John is such a beauty even then. Total heartthrob even now at 61
So very cool version of a good song
Simon's vocals are to die for. John sings well here too.
I played this song on my teens so many times! Still sounds great!
A great great cover
God, such great memories! DD and seeing gigs at tye Hammersmith Odeon in London, make up some of the greatest moments of my teenage years🎉.
greatest time ever..

Duran Duran is the best. Masterpiece. This is the best rendition of the song ever.

One of my very favorites still today. I had this on an import before Katrina. I just adore everything about this video.
Yr music gets me through the bad days, love you always Duran Duran .matt
the best and most imaginative cover dd ever did in my opinion 🧡
If I'd been a couple of years older I would have been there! Had this on VHS for years. Love the original but DD just killed it beautifully
This song gets me into such a good mood

Possibly the best cover version of a song ever made!
John was so underrated even then. He's amazing!
Would have loved 2 be there....but I was only 10 at the time:-(
Great extended version of a classic !!!!
ahhhh adore the original Cockney Rebel version! (even though they were never big here in the States) -- but had no idea Duran Duran covered it! love how the audience goes nuts with recognition too :)
This song was the B side on my 12 inch remix of the Reflex

Heard and own the version in CD format but never seen the actual video footage. Fantastic!

Nick Rhodes has always been my favorite too 🥰
Here in Denmark where I live it was either Duran Duran or Spandau Ballet - I liked both though.
