    School lunches is a great inititve NZ schools have, how can you say its a waste of money. Especially if they're helping the community and helping students gain NCEA accreditation for future studies. Not all families are so fortunate to be able to send their children with a full packed lunch so having this is a blessing and a relief for many. There is probably so many things that get over looked and parents are seen to not be looking after their kids. Not all families or cultures have sandwiches as a meal. Their has been times my son wants to take noodles to school but there arnt any facilities for the children to use, same with probably otther kids maybe they want to take their left over dinners from home to have for lunch. If you ever went to a construction site how many of the workers would you see that eat sandwiches?

    To put into perspective the school I work at (also South Auckland) has hundreds of spare lunches - teachers take them home, students, we give them to parents to take home - thousands of dollars in food each week - we tell them to send less but they dont listen.
    My own freezer is packed as is my neighbours and half the street.
    We give 100 plus to the local churches food drive each week and we still have spare - it's not all what you see on one TV show.

      Sounds like an issue of communication, why isn’t Mr Seymour trying to fix that then? He’s just using any excuse to cut programs.
      It’s like saying this road gets clogged every morning so let’s just close and demolish the road.
      Also perhaps as the video suggested the issue is that the lunches provided aren’t very good so the students don’t want to eat them.
      Also also what school you working at then?

    It's like Seymour is dictating his idea of what is that he thinks is happening. He's asked the question about its effectiveness but refuses to then validate it before making sweeping decisions, and also taking jobs.Does not listen to people telling him it works. It's going to be a fun society to be living in with the additional suffering he is obviously happy to create. Are we sure he is human or some AI politician optimising for cost. Oh hang on, ait might be more equitable. Sure some kids and families may not need it but what is the cost of administering that? What is the impact on the kids and families that are pointed out as needing help. He talks a big game about not dividing society yet his actions are and will create exactly that. He is a terrible excuse for a human. Definitely does not hold the values of this nation.

    It’s an incredible and important investment in all schools. If they’re looking for the “benefits” of doing this, look to top tech companies and other corporations that give free breakfast lunch and snacks to their employees. If it’s a financial investments that is proven to improve focus, well being and attendance. Unfortunately Seymour doesn’t have the credentials to understand this

    Filimone Vuna You are awesome. David does see less because even though David might think it's a waste of money; when a kid can concentrate because they aren't hungry that kid can actually make a difference in their life and in New Zealand's future. That's so funny about the school (ie not for profit) lunches having so little waste and being eaten, and the for profit contractors having waste because their food is crap. It sounds like this whole free school lunches thing has a for profit contractor issue and not a cost or wast issue to me and David is again seeing less because he's focusing on the for profit contractors that will always fail the students and put profit first. But for the people who think this is a waste of money just remember a hungry kid is angry, upset, pissed off, and out stealing your car. A kid who is fed is at home studying or stealing a car while playing GTA on the computer with their mates. So think of social programs not as hand outs. Think of them as a way to reduce your insurance. Wait is that a free handout?

What we need to remember is we need these children to help us when we get older and are no longer able to work, as we now provide for those that have entered retirement today ....

      I do remember in rural town school back in the day everyone had home made lunches at school, on the odd day when a student forgot their lunch, or weren't provided with any by parents, we all had to open our lunch boxes and were asked to give something out of it to give to them. I was a bit disappointed at times to do that as I was hungry myself....there were no large kids in school those days, and not many occasions where we had to share.

Coming from a background where we didnt have 5-star meals served to us very often, we were given one option- Eat what youre given. This has become such a polarizing topic when given a factual insight to these Free lunches. I believe there needs to be some kind of budgeting service to provide caregivers with tools to create budgets that can work for them.

      @pjlav6304 8 місяців тому

      @@chrismckellar9350 it's not about 'spare cash available'. That's the point, spare cash isn't meant for food, food expenses should be incorporated in to the weekly budget. It can be done. I've seen it can be done. The government also offers assistance for families per child which isn't much sure but it helps. This video clearly outlines part of the problem is 'what the kids want' not just what's available and this sentiment no doubt spills over in to the 'right' shoes, clothes, phones that the kids find acceptable... much like the FREE FOOD that they're turning their noses up at. This particular demographic that gets used as the poster-child for the needy (which I am a part of) tends to succumb to pressure to give to the church, give to families overseas and give to fundraising etc.. give me a break

      @@pjlav6304 - Do you live a lower social economic suburb? Yes, I do agree there are a lot of pressure to give 20% tithing or more to churches, to families, etc but that is social pressures. Yes there are pressure especially on Gen Z is what they see on social media. peer pressure, etc.
      I live in a social economic suburb and see what is happening, with youth and social crime and poverty. I have seen the meals that is provide to primary schools by a contract 'for profit at least cost' commercial school meal provider who is making a quick dollar from the the government and its bad even I wouldn't eat it and it is definitely not like what what is being provided in the Q&A report. I do support the school lunch programme but the food needs at a minimum standard to what is in the report and not below standard by a company who only wants to make a quick dollar from the government.

    • @pjlav6304
      @pjlav6304 8 місяців тому +1

      @@chrismckellar9350 I GOT OUT of a lower socioeconomic suburb with strong contacts still to that community. A lot of it is cultural pressures from my perspective. But I'm not going to accept excuses that the food isn't good enough for at-need-children. No food distributor is going to source out meals that are not safe to eat. That's what matters - that it's edible. Ask any child and they'll tell you; they'd prefer fast food, tasty, high sodium, high sugar foods. A meal is a meal. I find it ironic that most of these kids come from decent homes where respect is a principal that is enforced yet the response to FREE FOOD is not respectful, not to mention the comments they made about a politician that is trying to run the country. Ironically these kids are the ones out of touch it seems

      And gross, disgusting actually. Every indicator to children learning is linked to how they feel. I can tell you have no teaching background and speak from a seat of unknowing, using your personalised moralistic standpoint as a crutch to override the data, the facts about learning, and the complete apathy one needs to be so judgemental and punitive toward our future, the children.
      That is all.

    😂 how do you measure success with 'free lunches'. The cost is socialised. It creates culture of intrinsic worth. Bad messaging.
