The Abandoned Alaska Ghost Town Frozen In Time | Kennecott, Alaska Mining Town
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 бер 2024
- The historic Kennecott mining town is one of the last glimpses into Alaska's early days. We ventured into this abandoned town to tour the iconic red buildings, and learn more about the history of a town that was extremely important to the advancement of America in the early 20th Century. There is no way to truly describe the awe we felt wandering amongst the empty mining buildings perched on the mountainside, with views of the Kennicott glacier as far as the eye could see. We are so happy that we could share a piece of our adventure with you, and spread awareness of this beautiful relic hidden amongst the mountains. Although the journey to get here was by far our riskiest, the reward of getting to see this town in the quiet of winter was more than we could ever ask for.

We would love to hear from you!
Hi, we are Matt and Emily, and welcome to A Glimpse of Alaska! In September 2022, we made the 5,000 mile drive from our home in Florida to our new home: Alaska. We created this channel to document and share our adventures in this awe-inspiring state. We will be homesteading, truck camping, hunting, fishing, foraging, and doing everything else Alaska has to offer. We hope you follow along and enjoy!
This is the first UA-cam video that has shown this landmark during the winter. At least out of the Alaska video channels. Thanks for taking us! Beautiful and breathe taking
Wow! Beautiful
Okay, allowing for my love of Alaska, this episode was one of your best in so many ways. Suffice it to say that you two would make awesome guides for the town----and you'd probably not ever need to refer to your notes after the first few days, eh? Thank you for this---and I've been around and lived all over the world. This blew me away!
Thank you so much! Gotta say, it would be a pretty sweet gig to be tour guides there. We are so happy you enjoyed the video 😀
Absolutely love this, thank you both for teaching us about this historical place. Bring your notes anytime; it is so appreciated that you do the research for us. Have a great day!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed! 😊
Beautiful views up there! Your information about Kennecott was awesome. Thank you. Very enjoyable
I've really enjoy watching their partnership together exploring and adventuring.
This was amazing. Ty so much for taking me along.
Wow! Great video and the scenery is incredible. Thanks for sharing.❤❤❤❤❤
🙏🏽Thanking the Lord there are young people who love Alaska!💖
What an epic adventure and history journey! Great video, I can feel your enthusiasm and sense of wonder.
There used to be a "reality" show a few years agon that had as part of its programming, a family that lived in Kennecott. Another person who lived there wanted to turn the mine into a tourist attraction even though the majority of the towns inhabitants didn't agree with him. The program went off the air without any resolution known at the time. By watching this, it appears nothing came of it.
There was a TV show about the people of McCarthy a few years back, in that show they showed the struggles and disagreements of the people there to turn Kennecott into a tourist attraction, I think it was on the Discovery channel.
That show must have been fake. That place looked nothing like the show. People were living there just a few years ago. Now nothing 😂😂
Tv shows our fake@@billmitchell7731
Wow thanks for sharing that historical town with us. It was so cool & great views! I grew up in a small historical town so I appreciate those little quaint places 😊
It must have been so cool to grow up in a historical place like that!
@@AGlimpseOfAlaska it was the best....it was in Washington state
Was this the same place that was featured in edge of Alaska with the old chap who lived near the cable car at the top. It looks like a lot of money has been put in to it since the locals had the row with the guy trying to make it a tourist destination.
I wonder what happened to the families who moved there to get away fromeverything?.
Still nice to see you 2 out and about and yes the views are spectacular.
I think the show was fake. It looks nothing like the show😂😂
my wife an myself have been to kennekott 2 times and would go back again if we ever make it to alaska again. we stayed in Kennekott glaacier lodge and it was great. mine tour and glacier tours are a must
That sounds so fun! We would love to come back in the summer!
If I won the lottery I would buy that whole town. I've seen abandoned chat but I've never seen anything abandoned that was taken so care of exclamation point this place is absolutely beautiful!
Love the video. Fantastic scenery a d great information.
👏Awesome guys!!! Thank you!! ❤
Oh, my goodness! Thank you for the ‘glimpse’ of this unbelievable area of Alaska! The scenery makes me feel so overwhelmed! Thank you for this glorious ALASKAN ROADTRIP! So worthy of the many exclamation points!!😅
I always enjoy your videos. I love seeing all things Alaska. Job well done!!!
Thank you!
Fascinating!! Thanks for the history lesson!!
Thanks for sharing your trip to Alaska’s ghost town. Really enjoyed the video. Love you guys!
❤ great job . Very interesting video, part's of Alaska we haven't seen, and we watch several UA-cam people and families here on UA-cam. Very nice. Please stay safe out there. Alan&Maria from Indiana
Just one word AWESOME!!!!!!
Great video - As someone from Australia, I had mainly seen pics/video from summer with no snow, but the snow just makes it like a fairy tale. The contrast of burnt red/white is so eye catching as well. Thank you and keep up the great work!
Very cool. Thanks for showing the town and sharing the history. 😊
This is the first of your videos that I’ve watched. I jut loved seeing this ghost town. It looked like someone should walk out of the building except for the large snow build up. It was so beautiful. I can agree with your take on the surroundings. It is just breathtaking. Thank you for making this difficult trek to show us this. You have gained a fan.
Hey, Thank you for this beautiful trip along with the history. The town was in amazing condition. The land / landscape we are blessed with in this country is truly breathtaking. Be warm stay safe. Happy Saturday :)
Hi! Thanks for joining along once again! You are right, we are very blessed to live where we do. We’re a little biased but we live in the greatest nation and state on earth! Happy Saturday 😄
Amen. Thank you, happy Sunday :)
This deserves a million views, thank you this was a fun watch so interesting. Alaska is truly a beautiful state
You’re awesome, thank you!! 😊
My great grandfather worked there back in the 1930s. I still have his letters about it somewhere. Lot of interesting stories and his time there before and after moving his wife and kids there from Ohio.
Wow that was fascinating!! Thank you so much for sharing!!❤
Thank you for taking us along to ghost town would love to see it in the summer
Wow beautiful town and very fascinating history. The scenery looks amazing & breathtaking, thanks for sharing these videos ❤
Wow, sounds awesome. Thank you for sharing.
Enjoyed watching this. You both did a great job sharing the information about a place I didn’t know existed. Thank you!
Thank you for taking me along on your trip.
Thanks for taking us along, breathtaking views.. really enjoy ur channel…
This was fantastic. Thank you!❤
This was GREAT! LOVED traveling along with you and learning about Kennecott!
What beautiful scenery. Thanks for sharing the video. 🇨🇦
Enjoyed the winter visit to Kennecott, I've only seen it in the summer months on YB. The Drone & camera shots were awesome as always. Really appreciated the tour of all the buildings and the history of the mill town in Alaska. Thanks for sharing Matt & Emily. Did you see anyone else while you were there, it looked so empty?
We are glad you enjoyed! No, we did not see anyone else the whole day. It’s an unbelievably hard place to get to. When we said it’s remote we meant it. We had the whole place to ourselves! 🙂
Nicely done vid! Thank you for sharing :)
Great video, thanks for sharing!
Awesome job guys!!!
Wow, wow. Alaska at its finest
Superb!
Nice work guys. My favorite part of this video is that you went in winter. Alaska is too tough to access in the summer, and especially that old road leaving Chitina. I wish I could spend a winter there. Keep it up!
Nice job on this video. Great information. Thank you for sharing with us. You both did a great job. Awesome history lesson. ✌️🇺🇸
Nice job! Great photography and narration of the history.
What an amazing video, I so enjoyed it!
Beautiful ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
If you haven’t explored Hatcher’s pass and Independence Mine-check it out in early summer. Hatcher’s pass is beautiful. Kennecott area is beautiful as well, it’s incredible the engineering for remote Alaska.
Well done!
Awesome video guys. U should go back in the summer to see the differences on the landscape and hike to the root glacier, the one you guys talked about. It's a 6 mile from the Kennicott Historical Landmark and the more you walk, the better the scenery is. It's possible doing it alone with shoes crampons but since you're walking above a glacier its risky doing it without a guide.
Thank you for showing that beautiful Alaskan ghost town
Thank you. Blessings
This was nice to watch. I love history. Too cold for me though. Good job.
Wonderful video! Than you ❤
Great footage! Ok, a drone is definitely on my list. You’d just never be able to appreciate the views you guys saw without it. Really puts it in perspective for the viewers. Stunning!
Enjoyed this alot thks
Awesome video
Thank you ❤awesome!
Very cool!
It looks like fire did damage to a lot of the buildings. Very interesting video.
Great video 😊😊
My sister lives in Alaska and actually knows the owner and has a key to enter the area!! I have not been able to visit and experience it bit she did take my dad and bro there!
Excellent jog you guys!! My wife and I used a truck and camper and went there in the summer, ate dinner at the lodge, but did not take a tour. Learned a lot of the history of the place just now watching your video. Thank you for the work and time you took to make this happen. Really enjoyed it.
Fun video! Very interesting, thanks. KC Don 😉
First building aka visitors center was there during the mining days which was the old Blackburn school and the second small structure is a shower facility..
KENNECOTT/CR&NW HISTORICAL SOCIETY
❤❤❤
Too bad those cottages on Silk Stocking row are not for sale. That would be awesome to own. Thanks for the video. We enjoyed it
There was a reality show that featured this town. I think it was called Edge of Alaska.
I love Kennecott, but I haven’t been there in the winter.
Watch edge of Alaska it about Mccarthy and kennicot.
.
❤
There is a small town named McCarthy near the mine which has i think full time residents
Remember it’s a National Park with some private land mixed in.
I’ve seen mining towns before that had odd buildings like the oddly tall one (at 8:53).. they were usually the lift house (like modern day elevators). I’m not saying it is but it would explain the weird shape 😂
You guys didnt mention Rich Kirkwood who bought Kennecot in the late 70's and did most of the restorations, he had a dream to make it a tourist destination...
From what I could see on Google maps during the time of there's no snow, it did not look abandoned they show actual businesses on there, but of course maybe that's part of McCarthy. For the most part it's in a national park from what I read.
Hospital hosted multiple doctors and nurses throughout it's life. I have a list of employees formed of 1608 so far
I hope you have some
protection with you on account of the Sasquatch and bears
that are so prevalent
in remote parts of Alaska and even in Southeast Alaska where there are people. And have you ever heard of Portlock? The music's a little over the top in the beginning , by the
way. But what I was
saying about guns you don't go any place
out there on that
remote area without
guns because of the
bears and Sasquatch. The natives will all tell you that. And many of these mining places are abandoned because of the aforementioned. But they will never mention that.Have you
ever been to Knik glacier? That has some amazing amazing views.
So why did you decide to go there with all the snow it would be cool if you could go there when there's no snow then you could go and look in the windows or whatever I'm interested to see what it looks like inside.
What about the town Of Mcchappie. Has a lot of history too. In nineteen eighty three all those people were killed
👍
High schoolers were sent to cdv or Seattle I feel sorry for them missing out on great views......pshhhh CDV has plenty of great views lol you can probably guess where I live haha
Haha that’s actually really cool that you live out there! We can’t wait to go one day. The pictures look magical!
Structure remains down below is cribbing to contain the river
How u build a house up there to cold
1 Corinthians 2:9-10
King James Version
9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. Godsblessings over you .
You have to talk to the elders in the area, a piece of printed paper doesn't do it justice.
Why no one living there
I would be interested to know if Japanese workers helped build these buildings. You mentioned they served Japanese food there. Must be a reason why.
Burned down in 83 'but was rebuilt in 78'...huh ?
We meant to say rebuilt in 1987.
The show edge of alaska must have been fake. It looks nothing like the show. And the town was open with people living there just a few years ago. I watched every episode.
People have died there trying to reach that spot. No, thank you.
I don't care how many people try and change the name, it will always be a snowmobile. "snow machine" just sounds stupid and unnecessary.
That is the glory of THE CREATOR GOD. Who makes such things. His awesome wonders are astoundingly beautiful. all who will confess their sins to God will be forgiven thru the redemptive work of Jesus, that person can trust in Jesus's work to redem them.save them from the penalty of their sins, give them peace in their life with God, and eternal life when this life ends.
Ain't abandoned. It is a tourist trap.
Don't Luke the music
Then don't watch
Can you go into the building
In the summer, yes.
Excellent video!Thanks for sharing!
❤❤❤
