Air Conditioner Noisy and Loud

- Is your air conditioner really noisy, loud, screeching, rattling, grinding, or hissing? The compressor or condenser fan sounds like a jet engine or a helicopter? Perhaps the contactor is buzzing up a storm. In this video I go over 14 reasons why an AC may be very noisy inside or outside while the unit is running. This is not an extensive list so if you know something I missed or have a correction to anything I said, I would love to see you in the comments section! Here is the sound blanket link I promised to add to the description:

Thank you. My problem under category 13 solved by cleaning outer dust of the plastic frame. Now working noiselessly. You saved me a lot of expense and gave a piece of mind. God bless you.
Thank you for including actual noise sounds! This is a great reference video!
Glad to hear you found it helpful! Thank you for stopping by, may the rest of your weekend be wonderful!
Yes! Thanks for that.
@@WordofAdviceTVThanks for the amazing video. My fan is making screaching sound like your first example. What kind of oil can I spray on the shaft? Wd 40?
Agree! Very helpful! Thx!
This survey of 15 condenser noise problems is Brilliant. Not only does Jay clearly describe each noise and its possible cause, but the video is seamlessly edited to show the defect and repair it! This young mechanic is great. I should know because I had a D-1 license myself from 1981 to 1990 and was a fairly good technician, but this fellow is better!
I appreciate you adding each specific noise to help identify each issue.
Thank you!
Thank you for taking the extra effort of editing the sounds into the video. VERY well done. This 100% is the most helpful video I've seen on this topic
Agreed! Mine was making the grinding noise. Sprayed some a.p. lubricant and now it’s super quiet!
I had a loud grinding noise coming from the condenser fan motor. Not a screeching noise and the motor turned freely with power disconnected. It would not do this all the time. Checked everything that you mentioned. The motor was a two speed Emerson motor. After many hours of checking it turned out to be a defective circuit board fan speed controller located inside the AC unit( Comfortmaker twenty years old). I bypassed this circuit board and installed a short jumper wire so the fan motor would work on high speed only and it works perfect. No more noise. This circuit board is no longer available anywhere. With 92 degrees outside I`am getting getting 53 degrees inside at top of furnace duct work before going in to main duct that feeds the house. I`am a retired electric utility service technician. Thanks so much for all your great videos!!!
Wow, that is awesome that you were able to get it to work without any noise! Major kudos to you for tracking it down and also finding a way to fix it. Your case is pretty unique but thank you for describing it for anyone else who may go through the same 🙏🙏
@@WordofAdviceTV The wiring diagram on the inside of the AC access cover saved the day to help trace this problem down. It showed what wires fed the high and low speed on the fan motor and the circuit board. I just removed and taped the low speed connector and jumper the high speed connector to the AC feed. Circuit board has been disconnected.
I'm amazed at how smooth and clear you speak without any ers and uhs, or anything. It reminds me of Charles Stanley. Very good advice. Thanks.
🙏
Thanks for this video! I was able to verify the bad contactor on my moms air conditioner, and replace it with one bought from the local AC repair store. The audio sample helped. Not only did it solve the problem for only $22, the AC part store was thankful I supported a local retailer.
Thank you sooooo much for showing all the different noises. And thanks also for starting first with the easiest/economical fix!
This morning my wife and I thought for sure our AC unit was on the way out. I watched this video when I got home and then went outside to check it out. Turns out the fan motor screws that hold it it to the shroud were a full turn loose, all 4 of them! Tightened them up and it’s as quiet as can be. Thanks so much!
Just came home from a 14 hour shift to a house sitting around 82, inside unit was going 90-to-nothing but not cooling. Went outside and heard a loud, continuous buzzing. Followed this video’s suggestions and discovered it was the contactor. Some little ants had crawled inside the panel and obviously were trying to make a new home inside my contactor. Used some compressed air to get them out and tapped the contactor just like he said and voila! I have cool air again. Thanks
Daaaang this is the 2nd time this cat helped me.
Thank you so much! You saved us thousands of dollars, it took $7 to oil the fan motor and no noise anymore (the unit was cooling the house fine, the noise was just loud)
Thank you. You the best at teaching us DIY'S on the net. And 10 times better than a so called repair manual. Have a great day. 🙂👍
Glad to hear that you're liking the videos! Thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment Bruce. God bless you and family, have a fantastic weekend!
Just came across your video! Your explanations and delivery are amazing! Thank you!
Great list, should be required viewing for all A/C owners. Could save them a lot of money. One thing you could mention is the noise from a defrost cycle when it's a heat pump kind running in heating mode and outside temps are getting low. First time I heard that and it happened two or even three times in a row I was freaked out. But it's apparently quite normal and it's protecting the coils from freezing.
that's what our tech said for our unit, but it is REALLY LOUD I wish I could post the video here, and now the HOA is complaining.. heat works fine, but the unit is loud.
Best teacher ever.
Thank you for such a professional video and without annoying music playing in the background!!! Thanks for giving us the sounds too it really helps!!
@5:35 So I ended up placing a couple of weights (30lb total) on top of my dome shaped grate and it helped a bunch. The noise is barely noticeable now. Thanks!
Thanks a lot. My heat exhaust radiator was clogged with dirt, causing the compressor to heat up and make loud noises which was mentioned in the "Harrowing noise" section of your video. I was able to immediately address the issue thanks to you. Keep up the good work.
So glad you played the sounds! Knowing it could be something loose I found the brands name plate was half off!
This is a great video, especially since you added the sample noises in the video at the right times.
Thank you! Glad to hear you liked the sample sounds!
I can't tell you how much I appreciate the sounds you added for me to match what I am hearing to what could be wrong. Thank you.
I wish I saw your video this morning. I just had a second AC guy come and look at my helicopter sounding air handler. (The first guy recommended a total $8K replacement.) The 2nd guy took 10 seconds to figure it was just a vibration! He literally just held the drain pan with his hand and it stopped. He figured out it needed a tightened of a few screws and it stopped. If I heard your story about the picture frame leaning on the furnace sooner I might have figured it out. Well worth $140 though, instead of a new AC unit!
Jay, you have the sound effects down perfectly. Also with a great explanation of what causes those sounds and the remedies to correct and fix the noises. When cleaning a unit do you ever use a coil cleaner with muriatic acid? My self I like using a mild spray bottle of a cleaner of Clean and green or mean and green cleaner. Then back flush removing the top cover and fan. I love that hamburger joke another good one you aced it again. LOL
Good to see you Clayton my friend! Glad you liked the video and the joke. 😄 I actually never use coil cleaner on condenser coils and most techs I know don't either. Some of those cleaners can be corrosive to the coil and in most cases using just water is more than enough. 🤷♂️ But as long as the coil gets cleaned, either way is good. But if you like the coil to be spotless than a coil cleaner sure does help with that 😎👍👍
Well I did the brick for a while. I was at Home Depot and was looking for new screws since mine were stripped out and just happen to pickup some rubber washers. So, I put those washers under the screws and it worked great. It also reduced vibration. Now I can put the brick back in the sidewalk. Thanks for the tips.
yes KUDOS KUDOS to YOU !!!!!! i just fixed my ac with your help a 135 dollar fan and some caps vs a 4k new outside consider unit .the unit is 16 years old and just got some new life !!!!
Thank you so much for the useful information. I really appreciate you including the noises to look out for and how to address the various problems.
Thank you so much for making this video! Just moved into a house with some HVAC issues and an intermittent buzzing noise from the outdoor unit. This is a great place to start troubleshooting. Liked and subscribed!
A real professor.. good job I learned a lot thanks for sharing your knowledge.
God bless you and your family! The zoom oil was a priceless fix
We have a carrier, comfort AC system that has the big great, and we did not have any issues with it. Thank you for explaining all the tips in this video.

We just saw all of that no need for a recap 😂.
Great video, Thanks. My Lennox obviously uses a Scroll compressor as noted by the rattling sound you provided when shutting off. Otherwise, it runs smooth and cools fine.
Buzzing contactor for the win! Thanks for taking the time to post this video!
My compressor is clearly the noise with mine. And it stops cooling when it makes the sound. But if I shut it off for a while and then turn it back on, it is cold again until it makes the noise again.
For now I have portables till I can afford to get a new unit.
You included the sound that’s very professional!
Thank you so much! I just found that the top screws of my AC were all loose and after tightening them up, it is quiet as new now.
Such a rich video full of helpful educational information!
Awesome! Glad to hear that, thank you. 👍🙂
Hi bro, I am also technician. I have faced all those situations and you explained them well. Good video!
Awesome video! Great information and sounds included are so helpful. Very well done and informative video. Just saved us from a hot and miserable summer, and all we needed was new thermostat batteries! ( No one else we spoke with made that suggestion) I don't usually leave comments to videos, but you saved us so much!! Thank you! Thank You, Thank You!

Thanks! Great video as I was quickly able to diagnose my a/c's issues as having a loose top grate. Tightened the screws and the noise went away.
Amazing vided reduces my fear about AC, I watched other your videos , they are educational. Thanks a lot.
Very thorough explanation. Great video. Now I have to troubleshoot my a/c noise!!😂

Fan blade thats cracked and bent causes huge vibrations as well while spinning
Yes, I very much agree! Thank you for highlighting that 👍👍
Thanks so much for these videos! 💛
I had a rattling sound that was "fixed" by doing a little percussive maintenance on it. It also smelled REALLY badly last week before I went on a few day holiday.
Your videos my friend are amazing thank you so much
...great advice Jay.....thanks for posting... 🙂
You bet! Thanks for stopping by Ken, have a fantastic weekend!

Thanks very helpful
Perfect! Glad to hear the video was helpful. Have a great weekend Jahidul!
You should have a text message with a warning of the danger when you are near the capacitor. at 7:50
Hello Jay, thank you so much for taking your time explaining exhaustive reasons for ac noise. I had recently replaced my ac unit, but it started making the noise under reason #6. My ac guy replaced the compressor, but the same problem keeps on coming back. It would run fine for some time, but sporadically make that loud noise from the compressor for few minutes, blowing warm air, and then it would work fine. Any thoughts on what could be the problem?
That dad joke is coming with me to work
Hahaha I love it! Have a great weekend Jamie!
can you show a video where a normal one is running
Excellent video!
Very informative 👏
Thank you for sharing
Thank you nice
Thanks. I think ours has the lines vibrating in the walls
Got a new fan motor and they changed the capacitor at the same time. Then the “regular ac guy” did an annual check, changed the capacitor again (to one that pulled more amps, I peeked). So- now it is making a sound. Loud buzz…
Thank you
The GoTuber Guy for ALL my A/C maintenance info . Thanks for the help ! ,, 👍
Great job !! good info
Wow love the video and references
Great info, thanks!!
You are the best, thanks again!
Perfect video Thanks
Thank you!
That video was very good. I noticed the 220V relay switch on my unit makes a loud noise when turning on or off, and the only reason the noise is loud is because it's screwed into the chassis. The chassis is all metal so it's pretty much an accoustic box which amplifies the sound by an incredible amount.
I'm trying to figure out the best way to detach that switch, I'm thinking of a neoprene rubber ring of some sort that will prevent the switch contact hammer (whatever that's called) from vibrating the whole thing. I'm also looking for ways to dampen the reverberation of the sound in the protective metal grill fins, those all ressonate with the air flowing so I'm sure there are lots of decibels that can go away if I figure how to prevent them from vibrating. Any ideas or suggestions are welcome
Excellent! 👍👍
Thanks Tony! I appreciate you stopping by, have a magnificent weekend brother!
