Actually no they did not recount as they were suppose to BUT patrol officer Welsh was driving the money to the bank and later said one bag they had counted had ‘fell’ to the floor but he did not report it until he found out the bank was like hey there is money missing. That was days later than the day he said he had actually found it. Plus he also had grabbed money before it was counted. He spent some. Got a slap on the wrist really. If we had done something like this it would be prison time.
I kept waiting for the person doing the interrogation to ask if it was standard procedure to not only put date and signature but the "time" as well. If it was standard procedure, why wasn't it done. In nursing, everything especially when we [takes 3 people] count discarded or discontinued narcotics, all 3 signatures, date and time are added to each sheet of paper when the count is concluded.

No. The sheriff used the money for that to put new tires on his boat trailer. They were supposed to get a bunch of new equipment. Instead the sheriff got a new boat. Well that's what happens in southern Ohio anyway.

They don't want to look bad in front of their superiors, thinking that if they haven't done anything wrong then there shouldn't be any reason to not just tell the truth (just like they tell citizens when they're trying to get their ID). Wow for LE they are unorganized. I worked at JR Tobacco and it was nothing for each of our drawers that have 100,000 or almost close to it. At the end of our Swift we had to count them out and make sure we had the amount our register computer recorded. Each one of us counting our own cash register drawer. We had calculators and receipt tape, and at least two armed guards in the room with us and one standing outside the door. Oh and cameras. We didn't leave until our register money came out even. We had it done in an hour,

The department failed in not providing adequate money counting machinery. It should have been policy for that quantity of money to have gone straight to the bank. Did a bank employee take the bills?
They miscounted big deal! It was drug money! Wondering why the DEA no longer handles cash!? Could they have also had a discrepancy a time or two? I’m glad none of the officers lost their jobs!

I am, as I normally am, confused. I get that the money counted was short - and that the found money in Welch’s car was a problem. But that was a separate problem since it wasn’t counted with the rest. Shouldn’t have affected the miscount.
Ive cashed checks at a certain bank that the teller always shorted me and other employees $100. We would count it in front of her and she would say " oh sorry and hand back the $100without recounting anything. Proves she was a thief. I think the bank stole this money . Period

Here in Canada a police officer suspected of a crime doesn't get suspended without pay due to presumption of innocence. Are police officers in the US not afforded the same presumption of innocence?
It is *very* rare for cops to get suspended w/o pay, usually if there is clear and irrefutable evidence they did something wrong. In the Karen Reed case the lead investigator got suspended w/o pay after he testified to texts from his personal phone that were very inappropriate, however, I've never heard a cop getting suspended w/o pay for shooting an unarmed civilian - so we have some messed up standards.

I worked in a small bank 15 years ago and while the main branch had cash counters, we verified every bill and coin delivered from there by hand each morning. 3 ladies with a pad and pencil verified $25k to $50k every day with no issues. And we did it between 8 am and 8 30 before our branch opened at 9. Who are these clowns?

The SC ruled a drunk driver was a danger to others and that is enough to make them "reasonable". And they comply with the latter half in which the intention must clearly be announced as I believe DUI checkpoints are labeled as such. To combat these conflicting rulings they ruled that each state could decide whether they were legal or not

IMO the guy had worked an entire shift, then called at 11pm to come count money till after 3am. There could honestly have been some counting mistakes.
