  • I built two BBQ pit smokers in this video. The guy wanted them extra tall with more standoff between the coal bed and the cooking grates. He's interested in live fire cooking so these will work perfect him! Build details are below. Enjoy! Nick

  • @JJJere
    @JJJere 2 роки тому

    Very clean job. I don't know if I'm a fan of the design though. It seems like a great deal of wasted space not being able to lower the rack. Even if you could, it would be difficult to dig your meat out since it's so high. I'm 6'4".

    • @fabmakebuildcook6274
      @fabmakebuildcook6274  2 роки тому

      I hear you JeyJey. This was a specific build per customer specs. He was more interested in live fire cooking than the standard charcoal cooking done in these designs, and is why he wanted that larger standoff between the cooking grate and coal bed. I personally would like it shorter as well, but I think he'll enjoy dialing in these units. In hind sight adding a charcoal basket/rack and having multiple levels the charcoal basket/rack could slide into would've been nice. Basically bring the coals to the meat instead of the meat to the coals. Thanks for watching!

    I want to build one, but I don't think my mig can handle 3/16th. I may have to use 12guage steel max thickness for everything. I have an FC90 also, but I don't think its practical for this big of a job. What Mig welder you used? Also, was it on 240?

    • @fabmakebuildcook6274
      @fabmakebuildcook6274  2 роки тому

      I have a Yeswelder Mig welder running 240VAC. I think your Mig welder could work for thicker metals but would have to do multiple passes on each weld. If you need to use thinner metals you can still build a nice cooker. 11ga is pretty common. Good luck!

    FabMakeBuildCook - I have been thinking about making one of these or having someone make it. I want a little different though - I'd like one where you could have a Turkey on the rack standing up on a "Beer Can Style Holder" I use them on a Masterbuilt I have. I put the bird on the holder but have it sitting on a rack over cookie sheet just so it doesn't get hit hard if it flamed up without cookie sheet. I haven't measured to see how tall that actually is but that could be a great design for you to build one. I wanted a 36" wide x 24" deep. Thicker steel / possibly insulated since I am from Wisconsin. I wonder if it would help if you put taller stacks on top of these - help them really draw air.

    • @fabmakebuildcook6274
      @fabmakebuildcook6274  Рік тому +1

      Interesting concept. A big turkey could easily be 15" tall if put on a beer can (If not taller). Could make the lid a bit taller to accommodate and not mess with the standoff distance from the coal bed to the cooking grate. Taller stacks could help with draw. Almost thinking a vertical cabinet would be the way to go since you can have the cooking grates on different levels from the coal bed. That would be interesting. Hit me up on instagram if you have that platform and I'll share a pic of a 36" x 24" vertical cabinet I did last year for reference. @fabmakebuildcook

    • @stenny1970

      @@fabmakebuildcook6274 - I like the idea over cooking over the coals ( wood & charcoal ) I would think it would add a much better flavor than just the typical firebox on the side of a cooker. Also I like the fact that you can have rack 17" above coals as well - Shouldn't be able to really burn the meat like it can on say just a Weber grill. Don't have Instagram - Maybe one of these days. Do a video showing your 36" x 24" Like to see that. Just found your channel last night, glad I did/ New subscriber. Good luck on the Buch as well.

    You think these could be run as smokers if you put a brick layered rack in the middle with no bricks on one side? The brick layer should theoretically insulate the 'cooking chamber' from the direct heat and the opening on one side should allow heat and smoke to go up. It'd be great to have just one smoker/grill that you can easily configure to match your needs for the day.

    • @fabmakebuildcook6274
      @fabmakebuildcook6274  2 роки тому +1

      Hey dude. Yeah you could use a deflector plate or row of bricks to block the direct radiant heat. I don't think you'd get a similar draft as an offset smoker but could be useful for longer low-and-slow cooks.

      These aren't Chudboxes. Similar but different. It's a cheap 3" steel gusset I can buy premade from my metal supplier. Cut two notches in it and you're done. The second notch is only intended to be used if you have a ridiculously large fire in the box and don't want it to starve for oxygen. The air intake vents are what will primarily be used for intake controls. Thanks for watching
