@@vigneshnadar9475 Wrong. It was a punishment from Zeus. Zeus gave her curiosity and a box. The curiosity was the reason she opened the box, zeus wanted her to open the box thats why he gave her curiosity.

Well, ελπις (elpis = hope) was in the same class of evils things in the box/jar. The question of why it wasn't released is quite an important one. Sounds a lot like how God told Adam & Eve to not eat apples from the tree of knowledge but had a serpent that convinced them to eat the apples, coincidence or are we missing something here?
in the ORIGINAL MYTH, Hope was supposed to be the greatest ill of all, because it gives humanity the delusion that they can affect change upon the world to lessen suffering, when in reality that ability was supposedly only the purview of the gods. (I.e. it make one think that they can challenge the threads of Fate, and even the gods are rarely successful in that endeavor.)
I disagree. Like you mentioned, the gods themselves were subject to Fate. Their hope, in spite of their knowledge of this, and of their belief in an afterlife full of suffering, was almost an affirmation of their suffering. They found meaning in it. I'd it's not quite a delusion, but a rejection of a life without meaning due to Fate.
The version I'm familiar with was hope was intentionally left last so when Pandora opened the box she would allow all the ills and evils to befall the world and close it only when hope was left unknown to her and trapping it from all humanity...............................................the old Gods were short of dicks.
@@madisonatteberry9720 That's the B version. I'm familiar with that one as well. Perhaps one is the Macedonian version and the other the Greek version.
This is a wonderful story - reminding us that, although bad things are happening around us, there is still beauty left in the world. Keep it up, TED ED!!
From what I have read before, the gods made Pandora to punish Ephimetheus’s brother, Prometheus who has stolen the gods’ fire and gave it to mortals. So the gods made Pandora and gave her to Ephimetheus and gave her the box containing humanity’s greatest disgraces so that this family would be blame (to punish them for what Prometheus did). So she opened the box out of her internally given curiosity’s for released these disgraces out into the world. But the gods did not intend to leave the mortals in absolute peril so they put in Elpis, or Hope in the box also. Hope that helps heheheh
Zeus- Let me bless this child with the gift of eternal curiosity. Also Zeus- Hmmmm......What do I do with this box containing all the horrors of the world? *LOOKS AT PANDORA* *HANDS OVER THE BOX TO PANDORA* Zeus- Job. Well. Done. Now what's Hercules been upto these days?
Yes, I’m actually watching this because someone who was explaining Adam and Eve as pretty comparable, almost as proof that that really did happen, cause the stories align. 😁 it’s neat
Never thought of it like that. Neat. Then again I just learned about the legend of Pandora's Box. I mean I always heard about it, but never learned the actual story
I think the stories are similar because there really are sacred plants on Earth that will show people a lot more than society was ready for at the time. People back then feared what they couldn't understand. Furthermore, there are also many deadly plants that can cause mania, so they probably didn't want people to go experimenting with everything that came their way.
However this is not the full story of Pandora, you’re missing why Pandora was created and why Zevs gave her the box, leaving out the duality of hope as Zevs didn't place it there as a blessing but as hope is what makes life worth living despite all the sorrows in belief of a better time, hence making it the blessing of fortitude and the curse of self-torment
I feel this is one of the most important parts of Pandora's story. The art is good but this retelling is lackluster, missing a lot of the symbolism for the sake of simplicity.
The Greeks had quite an interesting view on life. Through tragedies, they showed that, despite their status as mere mortals in a world dominated by gods and fate, there was an underlying beauty to their suffering. Tis why I love Greek myths, oh so beautiful!
Congrats Ted Ed, it’s an honour for us, the Greeks, to transmit the history of Greek mythology to all the people with such an entertaining and interesting way! The history on its own, is not enough, it’s also about the way you pass it to your listener!
It's said that hope is the most horrendous of all evils in the box as all other evils play with the body and the mind but hope deceives the soul and forlongs its suffering . Hope cause humans to hold onto this world and wait eternally for the better times that never come Or else I am just a edge lord
The Greeks did not believe in a happy afterlife, quite the opposite. If anything, their hope was rooted in finding beauty and meaning in spite of their suffering. When Odysseus found Achilles in the underworld, all Achilles hoped for was one more day on Earth, even as a poor farmer. He regretted his choice of choosing immortality through his heroics versus living a life full of inherent suffering.
*Fun Fact*: Pandora in Greek (pan+dora//παν+δώρα) means the one with all the gifts and she was named Pandora because of the fact that the Gods gave her all those traits/gifts mentioned in the video
Great video! However, from all of our orginal Greek sources, it's Pandora's Pithos, a type of Greek jar, not a box. Pandora's Box is a mistranslation. Secondly, this plan was devised by the gods as a way to hurt mankind and blame it on Epimetheus, Prometheus's brother, as another way to further punish Prometheus for gifting fire to mankind, and to punish mankind for receiving it. This version of the story could possible exist, but it is very unlikely, and contains many modern additions. The Greek Gods were not viewed as benevolent, but merely reflections of reality. Ted-ed's versions of these myths are not accurate reflections of the greco-roman mythos, but they have animations so thats cool.
Pithos were used for storing wine, olive oil, and other provisions, and also ritually as containers for human bodies ready for burying. Maybe she wanted a snack in reality? Lol.
Some fun facts I've heard about this story: -Pandora was a gift from Zeus to Epimethius. -The box was a gift to Pandora on her and Epi’s wedding day. -Zeus made Pandora as a punishment, giving her the box knowing she would open it. Pandora was created to bring the punishment of mankind (Death, Disease, Greed, Sorrow, etc.) for accepting the gift of fire from Prometheus. Pandora opening the box was all a part of Zeus’s plans for revenge on man. Zeus always gets his way and his honor. Correction: Zeus didn’t create Pandora he ordered her creation from Hephaestus (the God of Forge), who was also ordered to chain Prometheus.
I dont know if this is just me but i terms of the third point, i think this story is tied to christianity, i think Jehovah genuinely wanted Eve to eat the fruit so that the full story of the bible would play out on Earth.
Yeah. And Pandora didn't open the "box" because she was curious. Women were the punishment for Men because they regained fire from Prometeus after Zeus took it away from them. And Pandora was only made to become part the humens (Men) and then unleash Zeus' punishment upon them.
Zeus: Gives Pandora the gift of curiosity. Also gives her box with no hint of the contents and telling her not to open it Man Zeus must've had a cruel sense of humor
It was a punishment as the titan Prometheus stole fire and gave it to mankind and so Zeus sent Pandora to the home of Epithemeus who was Prometheus' brother where she would unleash the horrors inside the box he gave her to punish Prothemeus as he was the one who created mankind
Hope is not the enemy nor the counterpart to the monsters unleashed through Pandora's box, Hope is the worst monster of them all, able to lull you into a false sense of change and security that leads people the cruelest acts of mankind. There were and still people who kill with the "hope" of making things better.
Hold on. That's not true. There's plenty of bad things that happen with hope, but in the majority GOOD things come out of it. Have you even been outside of your house
As most people I was confused why Pandora was given box which can't be opened under any circumstances and the gift of curiosity. Apparently Zeus knew this was going to happen and he wanted it to. He probably did this to make Humans suffer which in turn would mean Prometheus would suffer since everyone would blame his brother and his sister in law.
I heard a different story of pandora, and it was actually in my 4th grade textbook. It said that pandora was a beautiful mortal who caught the eyes of Zeus (as always) and Hera was understandably mad, so she had him give pandora a box. Zeus gave pandora out of the box, and out of curiosity opened it.
Zeus:gives her curiosity Also Zeus :gives her a box Still Zeus :dont ever open it Ticked of Pandora:now ytf u give it to me if u didn't want me to open it Zeus: coz one day ull make a great story
It wasn't really a box. It was a vase. But unfortunately there isn't a good translation of this term in English that sounds as well as box does. Also baby Pandora is adorable
Because this is an extremely whitewashed version of the myth that leaves out the fact that Pandora was sent to punish mankind for accepting fire from Prometheus.
@@CistudeSuisse it's way more different. First of all , Abrahamic God was explicit which would happen if they eat that and what they would receive. Second of all , it was not Adam and Eve alone , they were tempted by the Serpent , which is Satan. As such , that Tree was a test , in which Adam and Eve failed. Even though they failed that test and was punished with mortality and it's hardship , we know they were also continously blessed by God , as he often visits them , been even some central point in Caim & Abel. While Zeus , on the other hand , makes Pandora as a twofold punishiment: first to Epimetheus as he was Prometeus' brother and second to mankind as they received Prometeus' gift of fire.
I love how everybody points out the curiosity thing and the box and how that isn’t a good idea and it isn’t Zeus knew Zeus wanted to punish the humans for excepting the gift of fire so he created Pandora and gave her a bad box and curiosity basically making her into a time bomb
@@mongislort6440 but her curiosity is a lot stronger than ypurs and ofc u dont care whats inside a box untill someone tells u its forbidden to open it.
Hope - a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. I can see why it needed to be locked away. Depending on the perspective and understanding of the individual it'll provide an infinite energy of will power to persevere and overcome any/all obstacles in that pursuit. Whether the goal and means to achieve are harmful is a non-factor since hope for your better future is all you need to push onward. Not too mention its powerful synergies with hate, love, despair, peace, and many others. Sucks there wasn't a god to teach mankind how to properly care for ones own hope, raise, manage it and not allow it to disappear or overwhelm us.
another story of Pandora says that she never even opened the box a second time to let hope out thinking it was a demon trying to trick her she buried it deep in the ground
Jacob Clark the way I’ve always heard it was that upon seeing the evils escape she quickly closed the box, trapping the last spirit inside, named Hope. Kinda runs with the Greek theme of everything being dismal.
I am thoroughly impressed by the captivating storyline of the narrative. The intricate plot development and well-defined characters have truly captured my attention and kept me engaged throughout. The seamless integration of various elements has contributed to the overall immersive experience, making it a truly remarkable story to behold.
fun fact: the original story never indicated that pandora didn’t know what was in the pythos. Pandora was the gods punishment for humanity after prometheus gave them fire. also, at least in the versions i’ve read, hope never left the pythos, being symbolic of how hope will not leave humanity
@@visceraeyes525 Hmm ok but without hope we would not be here. What we accomplished in the past 100 years. If humanity lost hope after the World war 1 or World 2 we would not be this technologically advanced and you and I won't be replying to each other.
not really , Satan possesed the serpent or was the serpent in form. So , that Tree was a test , in which mankind failed. It's way different than Pandora , in which Zeus made her fail on purpose.

in the ORIGINAL MYTH, Hope was supposed to be the greatest ill of all, because it gives humanity the delusion that they can affect change upon the world to lessen suffering, when in reality that ability was supposedly only the purview of the gods. (I.e. it make one think that they can challenge the threads of Fate, and even the gods are rarely successful in that endeavor.)
TheStaffmaster that’s how I learned the story as well.
@@TheStaffmaster Perhaps. For me it's hard to tell which is which as both versions are short of bleak and the ancient Greeks were all bleak.

It's like the temptation of Adam and Eve story in the Bible. Zeus as God. Curiosity gift as free will. Box as the Forbidden fruit.
Furthermore, there are also many deadly plants that can cause mania, so they probably didn't want people to go experimenting with everything that came their way.
a lot of the Old Testament stories were actually based on Ancient Greek & Egyptian mythology.
@@TheWSYNkatevy153 And you know this with such certainty how?
However this is not the full story of Pandora, you’re missing why Pandora was created and why Zevs gave her the box, leaving out the duality of hope as Zevs didn't place it there as a blessing but as hope is what makes life worth living despite all the sorrows in belief of a better time, hence making it the blessing of fortitude and the curse of self-torment
I feel this is one of the most important parts of Pandora's story. The art is good but this retelling is lackluster, missing a lot of the symbolism for the sake of simplicity.
Hope is what makes people endure hardships. Sounds to me like a curse. I would rather have courage and fight back the hardship
The Greeks had quite an interesting view on life. Through tragedies, they showed that, despite their status as mere mortals in a world dominated by gods and fate, there was an underlying beauty to their suffering. Tis why I love Greek myths, oh so beautiful!

An another human Misty would be proud! TOGGAPEEEEE
It's said that hope is the most horrendous of all evils in the box as all other evils play with the body and the mind but hope deceives the soul and forlongs its suffering . Hope cause humans to hold onto this world and wait eternally for the better times that never come
Or else I am just a edge lord
The Greeks did not believe in a happy afterlife, quite the opposite. If anything, their hope was rooted in finding beauty and meaning in spite of their suffering. When Odysseus found Achilles in the underworld, all Achilles hoped for was one more day on Earth, even as a poor farmer. He regretted his choice of choosing immortality through his heroics versus living a life full of inherent suffering.

Some fun facts I've heard about this story:
-Pandora was a gift from Zeus to Epimethius.

We could say the same with the christian god and Eve.
Zeus set Pandora up for failure so he could punish human kind for getting fire thanks to Prometheus.
I love how everybody points out the curiosity thing and the box and how that isn’t a good idea and it isn’t Zeus knew Zeus wanted to punish the humans for excepting the gift of fire so he created Pandora and gave her a bad box and curiosity basically making her into a time bomb
