I Had Major Emergency Surgery in Rural Vietnam (You Won’t Believe How Much it Cost)

- In this interview, Trang asks me about the details of my recent appendix removal surgery that I had done in Phan Rang, Ninh Thuan, Vietnam. Phan Rang is a rural town on the South Central coast of Vietnam, about a 6 hour drive from Saigon (HCMC).
The appendectomy is considered a major emergency surgery. Removing the inflamed appendix can be a potential life saving procedure, and it involves being put to sleep, cut open, and having a part of your organs removed. I’m really thankful that the hospital in Phan Rang was able to perform the surgery well and I have recovered just fine.
During this interview, I go over how I found out I needed to have the surgery, what the surgery was like, what recovery was like, and how much the entire process cost. I also talk about ways in which I think the process could be improved, and how the overall care compares to what you would receive in Ho Chi Minh City and America.
Hopefully this video brings you some value and gives you a better perspective of what life is like for an expat in Vietnam, and what getting a major surgery is like in a different country.

$250 was so so cheap! Some people don’t have confident to speak English as a second language. The local hospital wasn’t as modernized but was able to perform a surgery and only charged $250 was excellent job! What does the $250 do nowadays with high inflation? The doctors and nurses at this hospital deserves credit for it.

It cheap cause govt subsidies it , hopefully someone in the US will do the same thing instead of letting the private company run the hospital and insurance company milking the shit out of hard working people
My Vietnamese American mom has dementia, and suddenly she forgot how to speak English. She lives in the past, remembers things that happened decades ago, and now speaks mostly Vietnamese. She broke her ribs last year, and we rushed her to Kaiser in Orange County. To our amazement, some of the nurses understood Vietnamese, spoke Vietnamese to her even though they themselves were not Vietnamese. When we weren't around, they understood her when she complained of being in pain or being thirsty. (Also, there were electronic communication devices that allowed them to communicate.) She was given stool softeners and had quite a few accidents. I was so moved to see how lovingly the nurses (including young male nurses in their 20's) washed her, changed her clothing and bedding with joy and care. Nurses are truly angels, and we got each of them a present with a message reminding them that they were angels in disguise. It is true, America's quality of care is elite and unmatched because of how the staff have been trained to care for patients. Having said all that, having a successful major surgery in a rural hospital in Vietnam for $220 is such an incredible thing, and the doctors and nurses in that hospital should be commended for the care they gave you and how little they charged you.

I believe the doctor kept you there because they don't want any complaint later from any complications that might arise like infection @incision point.

Dand, Bro! I am happy to see you are well. It is very important for people to know the symptoms of appendicitis, and if you suspect you are suffering from it that you get to an Emergency Room right away. Dealing with it very soon can save your life, or prevent you from suffering systemic poisoning.

Glad to see that everything worked out so well for you at the provincial hospital. I'm kind of amazed that they had the skilled doctors in that hospital to do arthroscopic minimally invasive surgery on you. Seems like Vietnam's doctors are almost catching up to the quality services available from the Thailand's doctors. I'm now inspired to actually book a flight to Vietnam from California to have some dental works done. The money that I save by doing the dental work in Vietnam will probably pay for my flight to Vietnam.
yeah the dental work, especially in the big cities, is high quality and much cheaper than in California
In America the hospital would get an interpreter for you, if you only speak a languagenother tha n English. We have interpretation services available everywhere. So if you are coming to visit the USS from any country don't worry about that. You will want insurance though, as our medical/pharmaceutical industry are overcome with greed.
Glad you're feeling better BTB. Getting open surgery is a foreign country is always a risk, and I know two people who had appendectomies *in the US* in recent years that went very wrong and with major complications. Kudos to your recovery skills, and major kudos to Trang and her family for helping you through.
Appendicitis surgery takes about a month to get over completely. (I had one myself at 18, luckily with no complications.)

Hello Bentley and Trang, first off, Trang family and herself were very caring and had been there all along for your surgery. That in itself was more than anyone could've asked for. I thought that was a very genuine concern for your welfare and a wonderful family that you are blessed with.
As for patient level of care, like everywhere in the world you get what you paid for, even though I think regardless of a patient affordabily, ethical care and hospitality s a requirement in patient care.

Glad you were able to get the treatment you needed, Tyler. Your description of how it all went sounds about right considering the place and what they charged you. $250 for the entire procedure is pennies compared to what it would cost here in the States. Sure, the beddings and nursing care could be way better but look at what you were charged for it. At the end of the day, you got the procedure that you surely needed and are doing well.

I am so glad you have recovered well. It is always a worry to have surgery abroad, but I have heard about how good the doctors and surgeons in Vietnam in spite of the facilities there. My sister was visiting Vietnam about 5 years ago, she slipped and broke her ankle and foot. She had surgery in a hospital in Danang, they did a fantastic job.
Very insightful video! Even with good insurance that operation would have cost me many thousands of dollars here in the US. If I were in your shoes I would have paid the bill and happy danced my way out the door! BTW, your GF has terrific interview skills!

My partner had some issue answering we went to a hospital/clinic in Hanoi and it was great service. The doctor even spoke English. Got scans and blood work too. The cost was very affordable for non-citizens.

Yikes, sounds a little scary at the hospital but glad they got you taken care of Tyler. I’d say you were lucky to be in Vietnam as I’m confident to say that an emergency room visit in Seattle where I live and the surgery you had would have maxed out my insurance. It would have cost me upwards of $8,000 and they probably would have sent you home an hour after the procedure.

I had my appendix removed back in 2011 and it was $21k billed, became $3k-ish after insurance. They kicked me out the same day because they needed the bed, and because it was an outpatient surgery. Now that think about it, I probably could have fly to Vietnam, have the surgery, recover, have a couple of weeks of vacation, and fly back for the same $3k I had to pay.
Idk man, late removal or surgery could be deadly if it bursts out.
21k bill? That's beyond cut throat price. It's a price of no one can pay it off.

Hi Taylor, yr appendix surgery reminds of when I went to a local clinic in HCM City having low abdominal pain on my right side. I suspect it was an inflamed appendix, but was told that if it is an inflamed appendix, d pain would b on d left
side. 1 yr later while I was in my home country in Australia, @ 1/2 am in d morning, I had strong abdominal pain. So I made my way to to d fridge, poured a cup of wine to kill d bugs as I thought it was bacteria of origin. I made my way back to d bedroom by way of d hall way n passed out in d hall way. In d morning, I went to my GP, n he said he'll pressed with his fingers on d right side of d lower abdomen, n when he takes his hand away, n d pain resounded, then it is d appendix, n it was. I went to d Emergency Dept, n that night they open up another surgery, n @ 10pm @ night, they operated. I woke up @ 2 hrs later n was terrified when @ d urge to pee , nothing came out.....God's been good to u as He has with me. d time frame between my pain in VN n in Aus. was @ 1 yr apart. Had it burst, I would have died.
In VN, they gave me some big tablets of charcoal to take which tells me that they 'than du' as a word play fr. d word
' thu dan'. Such cruel people, they were.

Damn, that private room in the hospital sounds great. Do you think that they will allow me to book a private room even though I am healthy? I would love to have a cute nurse to visits me and check up on me in my private room for only $30/day. LOLOLOL. Just kidding. Glad to see that the medical care in Vietnam is pretty good for common emergencies. Thanks for sharing yours experience with surgery in a Vietnam Provincial city. You should do more videos to educate us about the medical options including insurances available to tourists and expats in Vietnam. I would love to see videos of all the options that would be available to me for when I move to Vietnam. I was planning on using Bangkok for my medical needs, but if Vietnam is adequate, then I might just go to he hospital in Vietnam instead of flying to Thailand.
Great Informative Video! Most Expats living abroad do not have Medical insurance in the US anymore unless it's Medicare so it's good to know about the out of pocket costs for medical in Asian countries like Vietnam
In vietnam to study in medical school you must be realy good student and study for 5 years. After graduation you need to practice in a big hostpital for 3 years before to work at another hostpital

Còn bạn đến bệnh viện tư nhân thì bạn phải chịu chi phí cao hơn.Cơ sở do cá nhân mở thì do họ tự sửa chữa...Mong bạn trãi nghiệm bệnh viện công và tư nhân ở việt nam,có cả bệnh viện quốc tế cho người nước ngoài như bạn.Tùy theo thu nhập của mỗi người thôi...Chúc bạn hạnh phúc khi ở việt nam❤

I've been living in Mexico since 2018; over New Year's in 2019, I was in San Francisco visiting friends, and I had forgotten to get travel insurance for the US. I had acute appendicitis and went to SF General, the public hospital in SF. It took about 12 hours to get a room, and I was on a gurney in the hallway, they were not doing a great job with keeping my pain under control, the next day I went into surgery for a laparoscopic procedure it went well and I was discharged within 24 hours.
Before discharge, they came by with the bill. It was for $100,000 USD! At the time, I was between jobs, and I was able to get the bill down to $150 USD.
You got a super bargain, and I'd not want to go to a rural hospital in Vietnam. Luckily, you had your girlfriend with you.
when my dad was in the hospital, the insurance bill shows $10,000 a night. That can give people insight how expensive healthcare is in America. An ambulance ride cost me $1000 and this was the price I paid 20 years ago. There is a joke in America, people can't retire because they are force to work for health insurance.
What happened to people who can't pay? Do they let them die?

The reason the surgery in VN is so cheap: doctors are not forced to buy a malpractice insurance because their salary level is very low. In VN the police gets more money than a doctor and everyone knows why.

Hey Tyler , am glad the procedure went well, question, did the Hospital there provide u the IV fluids and all the medications, or did they ask Trang to buy from outside. I know from watching vlogs in PHILs, hospitals there require the patient's family to get all the medications/IV themselves. Also, in Phils there would be Armed guards preventing patients from leaving until they pay the bills or sign over collateral of some property, etc. Good to hear things went well.

Glad that you got out well from your appendectomy surgery. However when you talked about the cost of the surgery in VN and the US you did not mention the medical insurance that covers it. My son had an emergency appendectomy in California and had to stay at the hospital for a week due to medical complication and I have paid nothing ($0) although I almost fainted when I saw the copy of the bill sent by my insurance company.
It proves that I have a pretty good insurance plan where I work. Also glad that the appendix did not burst. Anyway good luck to you and watch what you eat from now on even if you have spent more time in VN than an occasional tourist.

Vietnam is the last place where you want to be for a medical emergency .
When eating food in VN don’t forget to also eat lots of spices like hot jalapeño and/or wasabi because they are antibacterial. If you’re not used to it train yourself to like it because it will help you fight germs.

@@hvtc3 Don’t take it too personal bro. I would say the same when visiting towns like Tijuana and Ensenada in Mexico and the locals agree with me because they have a stronger stomach than us. I’m not a doctor but it seems in VN people can get any medicine w/o prescription specially antibiotics. They think that it can kill both bacterias and viruses. I did not say hot spice can kill germs but it helps digestion and prevent diarrhea sometimes. Saluto.

You're taking a gamble there. Not all doctors in Vietnam are legit. Some bought their licenses.
Don't undermine the standard of education simply based on a country's economic classification, whether it's considered third or second world. I'm acquainted with highly skilled doctors, specializing in brain and heart surgery, practicing in rural areas of Vietnam. Let's acknowledge the reality that even in the United States, there are instances of individuals buying their way into medical school, and unfortunately, some of them have caused harm to patients. It goes to show that issues of competence are not exclusive to any particular location.
