I've just started this adventure in blacksmith work. I stated doing horseshoe art for the family and I'm using pliers to hold the hot metal. After watching you work the metal into tongues is outstanding...thanks for sharing this video and explaining what you're doing so that a a common person can fallow along...again, thanks for sharing.

What I love most bout your videos is that you do all this stuff on a high rise balcony! Great tongs and I would love to get my hands on them. Good for grabbing small knife stock from the bottom of my forge
I think my favorite part about your construction is not only the gerth of the tools but the brass finish you put on near the end adds to the tools making them unique. I have not seen anyone dothis to there tools and sence the first video I seenyou do ths in. I had to adopt this method when I am doing artistic type stuff along with the tool making process.

I like how simply you make the rivet head, using that block with the holes in it. It comes out very neat. I learn something every time I watch you.
Glen, your videos were part of what got me building my garage shop and embarking on my journey to become a blacksmith and bladesmith. I've tried your method for making tongs (gone through a lot of round stock) and I get closer each time, but your tong work is my standard.
The whole reason I initially subscribed to your channel was to see you make tongs. Bless your heart if you can make a nice serviceable set of tongs. I get how they're made, I understand the steps to make them...but I can't seem to make a set to save my life. Its just beyond me for some reason. I can make loads of other stuff but tongs just aren't my strong suit. Great work as always, Glen. Don't sweat the camera stuff. That's a handsome pair of scroll tongs that any smith (this one included) would be proud to use in his or her shop.

you have the cleanest work shop I've ever seen. I swear if I wake up in the morning and even think about firing up my forge then my whole world is immediately covered in rust. lol. there's no blacksmith community around here because it's all welding and trailers so everything I've learned has been from about the half a dozen people out watch on UA-cam regularly. I've made one successful pair of tongs (which just happen to be my very first pair) and have failed with flying colors ever since.. I guess it's lack of thick enougb stock mostly because they always turn out super thin. too thin. that and lack of experience. anyway, you're the man glen. keep making these videos so we can keep learning.

I bought a pair of 5/8 bent knee tongs in time for the Christmas before last and they are still some of my favorite and go-to tongs. I carry them in my travel kit because they are compact enough to fit in a tool box, but hardy enough to stand up to some rigorous use. I would recommend anyone give the bent knee style a try because they are simple, but agile. Keep up the good work Glen.

That upset gauging block is genius. I have honestly never seen that tool used by anyone else... And it gives me an idea as to what to do with a particular piece of steel I have (I started renting an old abandoned machine shop 6 months ago and moved my business operation to that building instead of my home shop. 3000 sq. Ft. Was a huge upgrade. Anyway the place came with lots and I mean LOTS of steels of all kind laying EVERYWHERE and LOTS of old proto type pieces of randomness the company had made for various industrial plants from all over) anyway I was able to made the "hot-cut shearing tool" you had made in another video using some of those old random items lying about. And I know just the piece of random abandoned metal that will suffice for an upsetting tool like yours at the beginning of the video... And I'm gonna make it accommodate 5 or 6 size variants. I stumbled on your videos a while back when I had a renewed interest in metal work. I am a machinist by trade but moved away from it many years ago. I am amazed at the size of your space. I have a 10x12 area myself for all of my work and it is a challenge for storage. How the heck does yours always look so neat? Lol Keep up the great videos sir. They are well done. One of these days, I hope my tongs look as good as yours.

I'm very interested in a set of tongs! You work very quickly and efficiently. Very little wasted movement. I love the tools I purchased from you in the past and I have a hard time turning the videos off until you have completed whatever it is you are working on at that time. Bruce, That's how a lot of guys realize they love blacksmithing. Something about steel, a normally hard and relatively inflexible material being in a extremely hot and plastic state hooks certain folks into this craft. Love the header you use for that Rivet, going to need to make one for myself seeing as riveting has been one of the somewhat harder skills for me to master.

What a great idea that upsetting jig is! Much more efficient transfer of energy since all the force is remaining straight down, and much less time and heat wasted straitening the bar out. Very generous thought of giving those tongs away too, very cool! BTW, I'll get that 1095 heat treating regime that I left a comment about in your last vid to ya shortly. Really admire your work, and have gained a lot of valuable knowledge from your videos. Working on a new gas fired forge, once done, I have plans to make some tongs following designs from a couple of your previous how to vids. I've been using pliers and fireplace tongs in a homemade coal forge, long overdue for an upgrade. Can't wait to try it. Thanks for the possibility of winning one made by you.

Very interesting and informative video Glenn. I spent about a month watching and researching how to make a gas burner and small forge and I have that constructed now. I also signed up for a 10 week basic blacksmithing class at SOFA (Southern Ohio Forge and Anvil). The first week we learned how to build and maintain a coal fire and basic drawing out. We made a couple of hooks and started on a scoop and poker to use to maintain the fire. I suspect if I want any tongs as nice as yours I'll have to buy them from you (which I'll do shortly), but I don't know yet which style and size to order. At any rate I just wanted to let you know that you are truly an inspiration.
I love your videos, and the tools are amazing, pleasing to look at and I am certain enjoyable to use.
The one thing I hope to get proficient at is tong making. I struggle to make a decent looking pair instead of just a almost usable pair. Thank you for the video.
