Oda did draw Garp as a kid in a SBS. He was a rough and roudy kid like Luffy, Ace and Sabo, riding a tiger he had beaten with a pipe in one hand and a treasure chest in the other.
The Monkey D. family is truly the personification of freedom.

Most of one piece characters can have a spin-off series of either their background, or their future adventures, or both. That's how good Oda is at crafting characters, in my opinion.

I see Garp I click. Forever in my top 5 fav characters in one piece and an extremely underrated character in my opinion. The amount of care that goes into writing this character is amazing

Your not wrong from behavior to belief Garp is a top Tier
50 years was probably a more dangerous time, like the death of brooks entire crew, and with Rocks running around and how pirates had a much less romantic view to them so I doubt they wanted to be pirates because they didn't have great idols like Roger, Rayleigh etc. So I definitely agree it was much more noble looking to be a marine then.
Also a lot of marine corruption has come to light since then such as the destruction of ohara and really everything that the strawhats have stirred up. Plus maybe the revolutionary army wasn't doing that much at the time before dragon joined so joining the marines would seem like a much better option.

Kin'emon's wife's full name is Tsurujo, the shortened name is O-Tsuru, just like Kiku's full name is Kikunojou and the shortened one is O-Kiku. The O is just a honorific prefix for women's names.

@@ProbieKnox Yes, the manga. In Oden's flashback chapter 960, her full name was 鶴女 Tsurujo, but Viz called her Miss Tsuru, which is not accurate I think.
My guess is that Garp's back story is all about him coming across some celestial dragons (he probably did some luffy type stuff at this age), had a series of crazy adventures leading to Garp being in a relationship with a celestial dragon, joining the marines (perhaps to save his son? you take me, but my son is free?) and dragon goes off to live his life and his wife dies? That seems tragic enough for one piece.
Like Tekking said, Garp joined the marines at 22, and Dragon was born a year later when Garp was 23. So unless he decided to join during the pregnancy for those reasons, it wouldn't make sense.
People tend to underestimate Garp when comparing him to the current Admirals.

I'm surprised. Anytime I think of Garp's strength of I remember the scene of him sitting in front of the execution platform & stopping Marco. I thought the implication was obvious: Garp's current strength is roughly comparable to at least that of 3 admirals in their prime (as is Snegoku's more than likely; perhaps Tsuru as well, though she seems to be more of a strategist than a combatant).
What about Woop Slap? I think he knows Garp very well, maybe they're some childhood friends who grow up together in the Foosha Village... and maybe he knows all of the Monkey D families
Two things you forgot in this video. 1. Garp had the scar when he was a little kid in the drawing Oda did of him, as a little kid, and 2. Oda confirmed in either an SBS or a Vivre card that Luffy wanted to be a pirate before Shanks ever came to Foosha, so he was not inspired by Shanks, Shanks is just the reason he wants to be the KING of the pirates
I was pretty sure 2 was the opposite. Esp going with the "party theory" luffy wanted to emulate joyboy as a kid, and then shanks inspired him to do that via piracy like Gol D Roger did.
Garps Backstory is the Top 3 characters I’m most interested in. Would love to see a flashback of his Ascension to V.A. And what crafted his current moral compass and distain for Nobels.
We all are, but it would really be hype to see him in a full flashback showing the god valley battle with Roger.

Here’s an idea, what if a female celestial dragon decided Garp was gonna sire her a child because of his notoriety as a young rising marine rookie. The reason he doesn’t really talk about her could be he was kinda forced into it because of her status and the reason he refuses to become an admiral and take orders from the celestial dragons is because he was used and discarded by Dragons mother. Could also explain his relationship with Dragon a bit how he doesn’t really talk about him that much, not that he doesn’t love or like his son but he’s a reminder of his affiliation with the celestial dragons and what they done to him.
Kinda a dark spin, but seeing how Garp has the will of D and seeing how a lot of the celestial dragons look down upon anyone who isn’t a celestial dragon it could make sense. Kinda just running with the idea if Monkey D Dragon was of a celestial dragon bloodline
in regards to Dragon being born 3 months after Garp joined the Marines: that's not necessarily true! it's not like Oda said "Dragon was born the second that Garp became 23", but, rather, his age means that it was sometime when Garp was 23. therefore, it could actually be, at maximum, 14-15 months (if we assume that Garp joined the Marines around his birthday), with 3 months being more so an absolute minimum
I’m betting Tsuru and Garp got drunk after a fight against a powerful pirate crew and Garp convinced Tsuru to drink with them. Only to wake up the next morning hung over and in the same bed with Garp. 9 months later she passed Garp his kid saying: “Take care of this.” And Garp says: “I DON’T KNOW HOW TO RAISE A KID!” Before passing their kid off to Wood Slap to raise.
Could Garp have joined "because" his lover was pregnant?
If she was a commoner or another marine, it would have brought in a stable source of income during the pregnancy and helped him raise his family.
If she was a celestial dragon, then maybe that was basically to bind him to the government. I.E
"You want to be with her? you want to be with your child? Then you have to become one of us!"
I always felt like garp was a pirate turned marine because of either a tragic loss or by force to protect something or someone
Yeah i also think that too.. and also knowing the fact that oda drew garp as a kid with a pipe in a hand and a treasure in one hand. Its not really much but y'know, in one piece world, treasure is really heavily associated with piracy. And he looked really like a deliquent at that drawing, pretty much looking like what ace, sabo and luffy looked before. He must've been a pirate or wanting to be a pirate then stuff happened then he became a marine 🤷♀️

I saw a theory about Garp not being the father of Dragon, but a father-in-law.
So the duaghter of Garp is Luffy's mom witch might comes from a celestial dragon's womb, and it makes sense as Garp joined the marine, they introduce a higher-up on the Celestial Dragon as a wife.
That will put Luffy technically a descendant of a Celestial dragon.
Judging from the SBS photo of Garp as a kid perhaps his backstory was like Mowgli from Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book and was adopted by a marine
Garp gave Luffy the same upbringing as he had. From the only picture we have it's clear that Garp was a wild child. Garp also had the scar next to his eye at that young age. So maybe it's self inflicted like Luffy or maybe it's a bit more sinister. I think that Garp first met Tsuru and Sengoku somewhere in the Grandline and that joining the marines is a plan that Sengoku came up with since he is a masterfull tactitian. The plan was to change the system from the inside, while keeping the D clan out of the picture so the WG would not enact a purge, effectively maintaing the current freedom the world has and improving it through legal means. The main reason for Garp to go ahead with the plan might actually be that he wanted to have a kids that got a better upbringing than him. It could be that Garp was a wild child because his parents where hiding from the WG. I reckon that Garp already knew about the D clan history (at least his own clan's) when joining the marines and if not then Sengoku informed him since i expect Sengoku's full name to be Gol D. Sengoku. (The Buddha fruit being the Devil fruit held by the leader of the clan)
Dragon's mother is just a guessing game but if Dragon was born only 1 year after Garp joined the marines than i think its more likey she is another D member than a Tenryubito. My theory is that Dragon's name comes from the D clan that Garp is the current head off namely the Azure Dragon clan of the East (the uo uo no mi was probably the Devil fruit of the leader of the Azure dragon clan before the void century). You can also quite easiy connect the other main D family's to the other Celestial Beasts. (Portgass - vermillion Bird, Marshall/Xebec - white tiger, Trafalgar - Black turtle)
Garp becoming Luffy's guardian might be similar to Ace's situation since we saw that he took Ace under his care after directly being informed by Gol D.Roger (the dad). So i actually think that in Luffy's case Garp was informed not by Dragon but Luffy's mom to take care of Luffy in case anything might happen to her. I suspect that the WG learned that she was a member of the Gol D. clan and assasinated her. But unlike with Roger i think Garp knew Luffy's mom quite well since i suspect that Luffy's mom is Sengoku's daughter. (Afro Luffy being foreshadowing ofcourse)
This means that the battle of marineford was a battle that had all the Clan Leaders of the various D clans participating.
And this also means that we currently have an Azure dragon (Kaido) duking it out with a Gold Dragon (Luffy) in Wano.
It says alot about Reighley that Akinu knew exactly where he was and decided, yeah if he's not causing problems, not even I will lead a task force to try to take him in.
Do you think it would be a coincidence if the day that Garp joined the navy is also the day that Roger asked Rayleigh to help him turn the world up-side down.

What if Garp fell in love with one of the slaves of the Celestial Dragons? Leading to the death of the slave or something, causing this hate from Dragon (maybe a facial tattoo is a symbol of that, and the Dragon name similar to the Snow surname from GoT) also causing the rift between Garp and Dragon. As well as Garp has actively opposed his grandson's decisions to be pirates, but he has never spoken out against his Son's decisions afaik.

Knowing Garp is obviously a D and that he's one of I think 2 Ds being in the navy. What is the will that he inherited? Whose will did he inherit? What are his ambitions? Has he achieved them?
I think his main ambition eventually became capturing Roger. Garp just seems like a guy who dislikes criminals and maybe the Rocks Pirates inspired him to join the Navy

Personally, I think it'd be neat if Garp had a rough childhood because of pirates. We've seen that many, I'd argue the overwhelming majority are the more real-world type. Plunder, pillage, make people miserable so they can be a little bit happier. Especially in an age before Roger when the strongest pirate was a guy like Xebec, I can see him growing up on some no-name island, losing everything (except maybe Sengoku and Tsuru) and deciding "Never Again."
The marines are bad, yeah, but not all of them are. If they were people wouldn't support the world government so blindly. Be neat to see a time when the government was less established, closer to being the "good" guys just by comparison because things were pretty much a free for all and pirates were almost all just scum and villainy instead of romantic adventurers.
While this seems plausible dont forget that the World government runs a big propaganda scheme. I mean definitely not all of them are bad but the Propaganda is most likely the reason people Support them+ lots of pirates just go pillage yes.
@@ayke9288 Yea, there are pirates like Captain Kid who just kill to raise their bounties, and pirates like Luffy who just want to be free and share that freedom with everyone; but when thinking about The Marines, that's where things are truly *gray* . With marines like Akainu, the marines present for Ohara's buster-call (or any buster-call), those that know of the human trafficking and slavery throughout the world and are indifferent to it all (all in the name of bringing "unruly pirates" to "justice"), It makes you wonder how much does a fleet admiral or any admiral really *know* about the world and it's politics. Is it really indifference or ignorance? Propaganda is very prominent in One Piece, so whose to say that any good deed by pirates are even propagated by the WG? If you wanted to paint pirates in a bad light, It's not very hard to. To keep up the image and truly believe that The Marines are there to protect (highly debatable), you'd have to literally be ignorant to whole concepts and protocols. So in short, Each side got assholes and heroes, but who is seen as what is up to who tells the tales in the end.
Eh I think it needs to be something more interesting than that. We’ve already had characters who’ve suffered at the hands of pirates and hated them or decided to join the marines to defeat them and protect people. I think Garp needs to have something more in his backstory. Or no backstory and he just joined the Marines because he wanted to be on what he was told was the right side.
I think Garp is the most well written character in the series. I would love a prequel novel on his early days as a Marine

Dragon was born when Garp was roughly 23, meaning that Garp joined marines when his wife was pregnant. So, I think Garp fell in love when he was 22. The girl he loved said that she can't be a wife of a pirate/criminal (whom, I assume, Garp was at the time). And Garp gives her a promise that he will become a good man and to prove that he will join marines. And I think that promise is the reason why he never left marines even after learning how WG and marines are corrupt.
I don't get why people think that Garp met his wife after joining marines, if Dragon was born roughly after he joined. I think he was born 7-9 month after Garp joined, and Garp was 22 and few month old when he joined marines.
I kinde feel that Garp have that "join the victorious side" motivation in him, seems like he knows a lot, including Dragon's goal and a lot of secrets, but go ahead and securing his position in marine so he can't be touched.
But on another note I absolutely LOVE videos where you explain the world building/character aspects of the One Piece world. Also the theories too.
Feeling really down today and my anxiety is kicking up. My room feels as if it’s a closed in prison and I feel as if I’m close to just crumbling. Hearing the “Ooooh boy” at the start of the video helped, just had to mention that before I continued the video.
I'd like to point out that even in Japan a man can take his wife's family name (especially if she is from a prominent family and he is not) and Garp has never called Dragon his son, only refering to Luffy as 'my kid's kid.' I honestly think that Dragon married Garp's Daughter and had Luffy.
Maybe, but the fact that Dragon was able to organize an entire revolutionary army with the potential to overthrow the world government from scratch really convinces me that he inherited the will of D and the monkey family name that comes with it

My theory is: Garp was naive when he was younger and thought the WG did only or mostly good things. The mother of dragon was a Celestial Dragon (but a kind one) and Garp joined forces with Roger to protect her (and the other CD) from Rocks. But since Garp is of low birth the other CD sentenced Dragons mother to death for having a son with someone like him. Since then Garp hated them.

Also my headcannon is Luffy's mom was taken from Dragon similar to the guy Zoro saved and brought to a doctor at Sabaody and thats why hes a rebel

I don't think at any point it has been confirmed that Dragon is Garp's son per se. For example during post Enies Lobby, Garp only talked about Dragon as Luffy's dad, so there is a possibility that Dragon is only Garp's son-in-law.
Plot twist: Dragon actually did want to raise Luffy but Garp hid him away in jungles because Dragon laid pipe with his daughter and he's always hated him for it

I do feel Brook is the least developed of the Strawhats. Like what are his values? I would really like some more morality with him. The closest to that was in Fishmen island where he got upset at the Fishmen pirates for saying their rage with live on. For Brook that's very upsetting cause he suffered so much to keep the legacy of his crew alive. Legacies won't keep themselves alive, you have to live for that.

I think a cool movie ideas would be a 2 hour+ movie about Garp and Roger during their childhoods and lives as a marine and pirate. A two sides of the same coin story. The climax could be the battle at God Valley and then in a potential sequel would show the last few years before Roger’s execution, with Roger’s execution being the end of the movie.
I actually wanted that tea video just to see what batshit crazy video tekking was going to make. But I guess the 10 videos about garp is nice too

At the 18:45 mark, so maybe you'll mention this, but going to post it here so I don't forget. What if Garp joined the Marines BECAUSE of Dragon's mom? Maybe he saw her at one point and through his friends decided joining the Marines was the best option to get closer to her. I have no doubts 22 year old Garp could throw down with the best at the time, quickly rose through the ranks and got to be closer to this mystery woman and then... Dragon. The time line does make it hard, but given that he had Dragon when he was 23 means, assuming he joined the marines on his 22nd birthday, he had a maximum total of 14 months(23-9) to meet with Dragon's mom and become a father while 23.

You should make series talking about the One Piece cover series that weren't adapted in the anime since they are cannon yet NOBODY ever talks about them. Each video can be like a chapter review foe each cover series. Most One Piece youtube channels just briefly mention them during a chapter review but none have made videos actually dedicated to each cover series which is cannon
I’d like.a prequel of garp, sengoku amd tsurus marine journey. Maybe showing how garp got kind of jaded about the marines pursuit of “justice” . Maybe building up to him fighting Roger and eventually teaming up to fight xebec. I think they would have a fun dynamic

You keep saying that Garp had to have met his wife in the first few months of being a marine, and therefore she had to be a marine or world government person, but the other theory is Garp joined the marines because he needed money to support the family he was about to start with his lovely wife.
Tekking your new mic is a dynamic mic which means it only take sounds that are close and directly into it. If you want to be able to just be anywhere and talk anywhere and it will sound good, use a condenser mic. You used to use a condenser mic

I think how garp joined was that he was first an adventurer, he wanted to explore the seas, then he met sengoku and tsuru and there was another one we dont know about, and in their travels the 4th died during a pirate attack, so they joined the marines together vowing to stop the pirates from hurting the innocents
