  • This is a Motormouth couple car review of the 2024 Honda HR-V subcompact crossover SUV. The Honda HR-V got a full redesign in 2023, so Honda has made no changes to the 2024 model.
It is one of the biggest SUVs in its class and although it started out quite expensive when it launched, other competitors have caught up in price. However, you will still pay a bit of a premium for a Honda and it does lack features some of its competitors have.
In Canada, the 2024 Honda HR-V 2WD model starts at $31,093 CAD, AWD $33,393 CAD, Sport-B $36,293 CAD and EX-L Navi $40,043 CAD.
    In the US, 2024 Honda HR-V LX 2WD/AWD $24,600 USD/$26,100 USD, Sport 2WD/AWD $26,150 USD/$27,650 USD and EX-L 2WD/AWD $28,150 USD/$29,650 USD.
The 2024 Honda HR-V has one powertrain option, a 2L 4-cylinder matched to a CVT with 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. FWD and AWD options are available.
2024 Honda HR-V standard features include a 7” touchscreen with wired Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a 7” driver display, a 4-speaker audio system, manual front seats, cloth upholstery and heated front seats. In the US, heated front seats are not standard.
The 2024 Honda HR-V top trim we are driving has all the extra features like leather trimmed upholstery, the larger 9” touchscreen, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a moonroof, heated steering wheel, 8-speaker audio system and a wireless charger.
The 2024 Honda HR-V is missing features that some of its competitors have like a power tailgate, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and power front seats In the US, a power driver’s seat is available but not in Canada.
Fuel economy, the 2024 Honda HR-V gets 9.4L/100 km, 25 MPG city and 7.8L/100 km, 30 MPG highway.

For all those unhappy with the pricing, I hate to break it to you but Honda doesn't care a single bit because they like Toyota are sold out for months in Canada. When I walked into a Toyota dealership last month they treated me like I should be thanking them for the honour of buying their vehicles for $1000s over MSRP. Honda wasn't much better although they were a bit friendlier due to fewer customers at the location I visited. Both almost laughed when the topic of MSRP was brought up.

So let's talk a bit.... Toyota have huge production issues. And ...no cars on dealers lots. That's why when you go to A Toyota dealer they look at you like...wtf are you doing here.
Honda , at least in Canada don't have same issues. In ON you can go any dealer and find almost any model. Ok?? You can buy easily under mrsp in ON. Except for type R and si.
Price for HRV is wrong, people are not stupid. It can harm brand reputation, Honda doesn't care but I was loyal for 20y , now I went VW. Why?? Price and improved quality overall.
Like me, there are many other people.
Now Honda wants to cut dealers profits by 40%. Why!?? They are preparing the electrification....hahahaha. what a stupid joke?? Honde never cared about electric vehicles in the first place. Honda is an overrated brand right now. For many reasons...

We cross shopped this car against the 2024 Mazda CX50 2.5s. Its about $1000 more than the top trim HRV EXL awd. We end up buying the Mazda CX50. The Mazda looks better(soul red), drives better, with more features.

With the upgrade to the new version based on the Civic platform, it's a little sad to see the loss of the "Magic seats" that were in the Fit. The original HR-V was based on the Fit platform. What you could do with the Magic seats was amazing.

Hi from 🇨🇦!! I just bought my new 2024 Honda HRV ex-l navi in the urban gray pearl colour 2 months ago,i love it! Great smooth ride, solid, love the curves on it compared to all the other SUVs that all look alike with their boxy look, love the leather interior the classy look to it, all of the options on it are great, plus it’s a Honda!! Can’t beat a Honda! It’s reliable!! And everyone says it’s slow… I find it has just enough speed, I don’t plan on bringing it drag racing…. So this car is great, I am very pleased with my purchase, plus it will have a great resale value. Can’t beat that❤

I purchased my white 2024 Honda HRV Sport this past October and overall I like it. Nice options for weather with heated steering wheel; heated seats; heated mirrors, & heated front windshield and back window where the wiper blades rest. Gas currently is 9.7 per 100km, not great but knew that going into it so this is a non-issue for me. Most new vechicles don't always get the sticker posted mileage. Steering is very nice and seat comfort is excellent. Safety features work well and this is my first time having any. The wiper fluid comes out of the wiper arm itself and this is a very good idea and works excellent with very little fluid be used unlike a normal wiper setup. A couple of things that would be an improvement for future years are: a pull down handle on the drivers side instead of the passenger side for the rear trunk door. Wipers come up for cleaning a little strange for changing or cleaning.
    Here is the steps:
    1. Set the power mode to ON, then to VEHICLE OFF.
    2. Within 10 seconds of setting the power mode to VEHICLE OFF, hold the wiper
switch in the MIST position for more than two seconds.
*Both wiper arms are set to the maintenance position.
    3. Lift both wiper arms. You almost need to take a course to do this :)
A hybrid would be excellent for this vehicle, but that will come. Happy with my purchase, the 2.0 engine is a pretty good honda engine overall in other Honda products but not ideal for this setup.
Agree on you feedback on the lack of power features.
My purchase price was $36k but got a good trade in value on my 10 year old civic. I test drove a Toyota Cross but found the overall steering and driver comfort better in the HRV. I offered to buy after a test drive a 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Limited on the spot but the dealer wouldn't sell it to me due to low inventory so I went to Honda, test drove the HRV and bought the same day. As you had mentioned in answering the question, I also would have taken the Subaru Crosstrek but it wasn't meant to be. That vehicle drives really nice and quiet for sure. Top notch. I have only driven 6500kms on my HRV since this past October. I used my back window defroster daily for whole winter no issues with the back window on my year and model.
    Thanks for the great review.

hello! indeed, but HRV is also concerned. I am an insurance broker and HRV also costs a fortune, considered at high risk of theft by insurers... Sometimes premium is twice of other brands for comparable vehicles (Kona, Seltos, etc.) 1000 $ a year makes a hugeee difference in real cost of ownership

The Mazda CX-30, even non-turbo is such a better car (sad to see it missing from For Your Consideration) but the Subaru and Toyota are also a better value in this segment! Great informative videos, just recently bought a Subaru Forester touring model. The prices for used cars are high so buying a new car for a few thousand dollars more Canadian made more sense. I watched some videos before buying the Subaru Forester including yours and your information is reasonbly accurate IMO(Thanks very much). I took a used Toyota Rav4 XLE and a used Subaru Forester touring same year 2022 with similar mileage and the Subaru had the best ride and comfort with enough power for my needs. The best way to test any 4 cylinder car is drive a large hill like in a river valley and it will tell the prospective buyer if it has enough power and if it does burn oil(very telling of deficiencies ) Subaru passed with flying colors when ticking the want boxes , the Toyota also was very good but was louder + does not soak up bumps as good as Subaru suspension did. My wife noticed this also and she liked the seats in the Subaru better also. I have a Honda pilot 2008 model LX base model and it is one of the best cars I have ever owned and has about 170,000 kms on it. Andrea and Zack when you mention miles per gallon or liters /100kms are you folks using imperial gallons or American gallons mpg? Thanks!

My wife and I just test drove a 2024 Mazda CX-30 2.5 S Preferred and a 2025 Honda HRV EX-L back to back today. What an eye opener! The CX-30’s 6-speed auto transmission sloppily surged pulling away from a stop, and its audio controller was super unfriendly to use. In contrast, the HRV had more comfortable seats, more features, a better ride, logical user friendly controls, and more interior space, all at a lower price.

The 2.0L doesn't have GDI and won't suffer from the oil dilution issues that are (still) present on the 1.5T. It will have much greater longevity, while still being plenty powerful for a vehicle of this class (entry level crossover). It has zero sporting pretensions - their target market is frugal and is primarily looking for practicality and reliability, which this model has in spades. If you wanted something with more personality, you'd want to look at the upcoming Acura variant.

Canadian pricing is up there for sure. We paid $26,050 USD for our AWD LX in NY back in February. MSRP $27,450 - $1,400 discount. I agree it’s slow and loud at full throttle, but it’s the perfect AWD around town 2nd vehicle for us. Our 2017 Civic LX was too hard to get in and out of these days. Insurance for identical coverage is $24 more annually than the Civic with State Farm.

I just wanted to say I really enjoy your channel and the Canadian angle is nice to see. The problem I have is when you show the pricing of the HR-V, it’s from Honda Canada. At my local dealership in Alberta, the price is $40,409 for the LX-B, a brutal difference in reality. I think it would be helpful to include accurate on-the-street real-world pricing. Local dealer gouging is still an issue, even with plenty of inventory. As a lifetime Honda owner I couldn’t be more disappointed in their pricing structure now.

Alternate take: it's not that it doesn't have enough horsepower, but that is too big for its engine. The Crosstrek where's the 2.0l is not fast but is appropriate for its purpose and power level. This current HR-V is a bit big and puffy for an urban commuter. It's the size of the older CR-Vs, but those used to get the torquier K24 engines.

I got this car in January to trace my 2020 version. I’m personally very happy with it because of the bigger cargo space; the simplicity yet sleekness of the design which feels unassuming, yet still stylish, and it’s a smooth ride.
I personally don’t think it’s too loud, and I like that I can hear when I’m revving my engine to overtake or merge. It’s also very comfortable when I’m driving early morning or late night on the highway and I can just cruise control it.
However, I don’t like how they dropped the right-side view camera from the 2024 sport. In my 2020 that camera was a huge help while dining in Downtown traffic and being able to see cyclists better… And many of them think they’re above proper road usage.
Personally though, I can’t wait until this comes as a hybrid.

After test drive Dealer said " We have a red Sport coming in April .Take it or leave it for $1700 over MSRP" for local adds I don't want or need. All dealers are doing this in Canada. Ended up putting a refundable deposit on an incoming Hyundai Sonata Preferred Trend Sedan with AWD 2.5 191 hp , Leather Power Heated & Cooled seats , Panorama roof .Gets 5 more MPG & 2 years more full warranty than Honda & better drive for less $$. Only $599 over MSRP. When is this price gouging going to stop in Canada?

However , my insurance almost doubled on my CRV (high theft premium surcharge in ontario)and when quoted a price for insuring a 2024 crv verses hrv it wasnt even close --huge surcharge for the crv

Honda and Toyota are now duping customers by offering the cheapest interiors and fewest features for the highest prices in the segment. People are blindly buying these cars because they hear ‘reliability’. How many people are going to drive 300,000 km to realize the full reliability potential? You would need to keep the car 12-15 years for that. Most people switch cars in 3-4 years. Folks, at least buy a car that can protect you in an accident. Hondas get crushed even if a bicycle hits them.

The starting price in the U.S. is reasonable compared to the competition. It's actually a tad cheaper than the Civic hatch, which makes no sense. I'm very disappointed we don't get this fun, beautiful color in the U.S. The colors offered here are boring as hell, except for the bright red on the upper trims. Very odd decision since this is a vehicle that appeals to younger buyers. I agree about those wheels. Hideous. I don't think the exterior design is particularly attractive from any angle. It looks the worst at the front. It's nondescript with a weird snout. We'll see how it holds up with time, but what I keep hearing from auto journalists and owners is that it's slow, noisy, and uncomfortable. Seems like this generation is a pretty hard miss by Honda.

Honda Australia has set its sales target at 20,000 units across all types and is on track to fail to meet that. By comparison , just ten years ago it sold more than 60,000 units. Here the price is around $8,000 too high, using a fixed price business model, and misses a LOT of safety gear. I would add that people pay for longevity and quality. Key is engine life. Comparing the legendary 2 litre in the 2006 Honda crv with this 2 litre (I assume the same 2 litre engine offered in the 2017/2018 generation of base equipment crv without the 1.5 turbo) would have been useful information for buyers. Our 2006 crv was bought new for 38k Canadian. It has 280,000 km…many have more. As to dimensions, the HRV is 10” shorter, and 3” flatter than the 2006 crv, and is equally as wide. My big question is simply this,.. is the HRV a product of the past where simplicity was related to longevity? When we replaced the 2006 Honda crv exl with a 2018 crv touring, it was obvious size creep larger was a thing amongst all makers, forcing those who like the 2006 size to look at Audi q3 type SUVs in that class. Same thing with size creep in Mercedes supplanting the old e class with the new c class. The old e from the 90s was the perfect size passenger car. I guess we’ll know if the HRV is the only one left on the roads in 20 years when the Subarus stop running. Hard to tell. Lastly, the old 2006 is also highway noisy. My daughter just “cranks up the tunes” when she drives it. Don’t need to add more weight with sound insulation. Basic is a principle many have forgotten in favour of flash considering longevity last. As a retiree, my Mercedes is much quieter. But it was more twice the price of a new crv in 2014.
