Thanks, Dave. Our house came with a sink that was divided and somewhat shallow. On a whim, we replaced it with a deeper single sink. It is amazing how much we prefer these changes

Normally I dislike videos produced by businesses, because they're always biased toward one brand. This video presents the various benefits and issues with each type of installation, without veering into mentioning brands. Well done, sir, and thanks for not insisting that people subscribe, lol.
VERY helpful. I chose a granite composite and everything he said is true about finish and feel. Mine (Blanco) has a slight curve on the front side (not a farmer style) which is really nice. I'm excited to see it installed. Its an undermount.
I’d love to see pictures of the finished project. You can email me, tweet me or tag me or Instagram.

Thank you so much for this video! I've been pulling my hair out trying to find a sink for my remodel. I want something that's low maintenance but will last for a while.
I would recommend looking at the composite granite models I have linked in the description. Those are terrific 😊
@@RemodelMedia I ended up with a granite sink and I love it. I bought a Kraus KGU-413B, 31-inch, undermount, single bowl, black onyx, granite kitchen sink. I only wish it sloped a bit more towards the center where the drain is, but otherwise, it's perfect.

I was concerned about stainless steel scratches when getting a new one (many varieties and size availability at good cost) but learnt how to take those out by fine grain sandpaper and make it look really shiny good again
THX so much for the tip. I am on the fence right now as to what type of kitchen sink to replace my current one with, and already know that SS looks terrible after just a couple months of use. But also found out that granite/composite sinks can also be a lot of maintenance to keep looking nice. Looking into more of the fireclay at this point...

Aawww I’ve been wanting a white farmhouse front apron sink forever 😥 but I didn’t know it would scratch or crack around the drain and rust ... bummer 🥺 . I also didn’t know that I needed this video 🤭 , thank you for sharing.
Then I’ve got good news 😃. That’s only true if the sink you’re looking at is cast-iron. You can still have your sink if it’s fireclay. Fireclay doesn’t chip or rust the way porcelain enamel cast-iron does. So go get that farmhouse sink.
Anyone who owns a short apron farmhouse cast iron or a fireclay sink? What are your thoughts vs one or the other in your experiences and what brands? Thanks in advance.

If you do not have a dishwasher a double sink with draining board makes life easier..
BTW stainless can be restored easily with buffing compound.
Hi David - absolutely correct. I love sink accessories like this. As far as stainless, yes it can be restored, but some people don't want the hassle. Different strokes for different folks. Great info.
I bought composite granite sink for my kitchen remodel about 8 years ago. It was brown in color. After some time I started to notice a whiteish haze on the sink. Now we do live in a house which uses a water softener. But the discoloration of that sink does not make the statement that I wanted. I have not found anything to clean it long term. You can rub oil on it and it does mask the problem for a short period of time. I’ve had stainless before I didn’t like the drum sound even with a high quality insulated model. So at this point if I had it to do again I guess I would go with something that can be cleaned like porcelain, but colored.
Thank you. I prefer stainless one bowl style.
You’re very welcome. As long as you know all the pros and cons of the material and are making an informed decision, that’s all that matters. 😃

Good information Dave...what about the person that has to replace the sink in a hole that is already there...?

I have stainless steel…it’s VERY low maintenance, never had a problem & always looks good. ( I clean as I go). Here to look at porcelain farmhouse styles… unsure . Fire 🔥 clay?
I see reviews of stainless steel rusting and pitting within a week. From well known names. Also, there are apron sinks with just the front apron. Also you need to decide right drain, left drain, center drain. I suggest , decide on sink and space before ordering cabinet.
Regret. Allowed contractor to put a 7 inch shallow double sink. After 7 years of a splashed countertop, My wife now wants a deeper single sink. Undermount sink in granite countertop. Installer, who did a great job, strongly discouraged her from making the change. He stated the size has to be exactly the same, since the countertop is granite. Our previous house we had a deep composite and loved it.
Warn to state that the contractor said that the plumbing setup, kitchen on slab, precluded a deeper sink.
I wish we installed an over the counter drop in.
What are your thoughts with people having granite countertops?
Awesome video. I think I'll go with fireclay. I like the look of the gloss, and the fact that it's one material all the way thru.
One question, how would it hold up to cast iron skillets?
It's incredibly durable. Obviously if you hit anything hard enough with a cast iron skillet it will break, however you'd litterally have to swing it like Rapunzel in Tangled to make an impact. Just moving it around and casually bumping you'll be fine.
And before I forget - thanks for watching.
Awesome! Thanks for the reply!
@@landonm11 I'm happy to help.
Everything explained so well. Thanks.
If you have hard water, avoid the dark composite stone sinks. The mineral deposits can only be removed by diamond polishing. Good luck finding someone who offers that service.
Thanks. I did not know that. Your advice is *really* appreciated.
Good video! Thanks....
One of my concerns is the reveal. Sinks with rounded edges are going to have a big, angled space that collects scum, especially if you don't have a positive reveal. It seems like a S.S. sink with an extremely flat surface would provide the most attractive and functional seal regardless of if you had a positive or neutral reveal.
I want the smooth attractive reveal, but I don't want a S.S. sink.
I'm probably going to roll the dice and go with a Fireclay undermount.
Very helpful. A general discussion about price comparison, not even amounts, would have been very, very helpful❗
We all know there are tradeoffs, but I don't know how much the cost difference is of one over the other. Is it a 10% difference? 30%? 50%? That info can be equally as important to a budget!
Also, which of the options add the most cost? Is it the mount style? Or the sink style? Or the hardware? Where are you going to spend crazy amounts of money if you aren't care?
Thanks for the feedback let me know if this video helps answer some of your questions. ua-cam.com/video/hWuiHcFn6yg/v-deo.html
@@RemodelMedia thanks, he had a little to get me started on the 🙂
Dave, you're a single mothers dream! Thanks for the knowledge. I feel more empowered going at this remodel alone.
Thanks for all of this useful information. What is the ideal depth of a sink so as not to cause back strain from leaning over. Is there a formula for how tall a person is to how deep the sink should be? One reason I prefer a divided sink is because I can rest a pan on the center portion while scrubbing. Also, what about the faucet and how high or low should it be so as not to cause so much splashing? Maybe I’m overthinking this! Thanks!
So many sinks are too deep to be comfortably used, yet vendors act like extra depth is a premium feature.
Thanks much. This was helpful. I didn't know sinks had so much going on!
Super helpful!!! Thank you for explaining everything! Awesome content

Thank you for this video!! Sorry I was late. I got stuck in traffic.
This video is a few years old so I don't know if I'll get any response, but I'm looking for a sink right now and need help. We are looking for a double bowl, porcelain sink with an integrated drainboard. We're having such a difficult time! The reason we want this is two fold: it's very handy and it is aesthetically appropriate for our 1947 kitchen. The fireclay sounds like it might be a good choice, but I DON'T like the apron front style. If you have any tips on where to look (we're in Oregon) I would love to hear it. Very informative video, by the way :-)
First you’re very welcome I’m happy to help. However as I’m sure you’ve discovered there is a lack of availability when it comes to this kind of thing in cast-iron or fire clay. Kohler and CECO sinks are the only two companies left in the cast-iron game. The truth is the bowl orientation that you’re looking for is most likely going to be found in copper, stainless steel, or composite granite. There is another option however you can have a drainboard molded into your countertop if you use some sort of a man-made thing like a Corian or a concrete countertop.
This is very helpful. Thank you
You’re very welcome happy to help 😃
I would've liked more info about the composite sinks. For the others, you mentioned whether they stain, chip, scratch, how hard it is to clean them, etc. Nothing on the composites.
Thank you Dave for sharing your knowledge. Awesome video.
Hi Dave, thanks for this video. It is the most comprehensive video I've seen on the subject. I need direction on removing and replacing a sink. Help. It was suggested to replace with a similar size and shape which is fine, if I can find one in stainless steel. The problem is this man made material, was made in an shape and I'm stuck. Any suggestions?
I could almost make this an episode of Quick Tip Tuesday. In fact I might. The short answer is you MIGHT be stuck. Rectangles are generally easier shapes to match than others. Do you happen to know the make and model of the original sink? I could answer the question. You should also keep in mind that you are going from a thicker material (composite material / composite stone) to a thinner material (stainless) which will throw off your measurements slightly as well. If you don't know the make/model send me a photo on Twitter/Instagram @remodelmedia or email info@remodelmedia.tv and I'll see if I can help you. Thanks for watching and make sure you're subscribed so you never miss an episode.
Thanks for the tips🙏😀
Thanks Dave! I have been looking for this type of information. Very appreciate your knowledge and share,
Porcelain sinks have no “give” to absorb impacts so chinking into the sides causes more cracks or chips in glassware and crockery than less rigid materials.
True, especially today's cast iron which has much less lead and is less maleable and therefore less resistant to shock. Old cast iron was so durable due to the lead in the metal.
When I was in college, I was rinsing off the outside of a (full, unopened) bottle of grape juice in the porcelain bathroom sink and accidentally dropped the bottle. It broke the sink.
Nice information, this I should have known two years ago, I had a black 'composite' sink I thought looked like 1.000$ then I remodeled my kitchen and bought the cheapest sink I found, in stainless steel, and kind of regret a little, because, just like he say, I must clean it all the time, what would be interesting is the possibilities to replace the sink and/or paint it or something, do not think that is possible but....
Unfortunately right now I am not aware of a way to paint stainless and keep the finish consistent. Perhaps heat tempering? But that’s not something you would do at home.
@@RemodelMedia - actually, funny enough, I have a tip to you, some half a year ago I was in a shop selling paint etc and was talking to one of the employees, complaining about my stainless steel sink, and she suggested something meant for cars I think, at least, she walked me to the car department, found a tube with "autosol" metal polish, which was hell to work with, but the result is very good, still nice after months, next time I polish I will use a machine I think, now the sink look much better and very easy to clean
Thanks Dave!
Question! Which sink mount would you recommend to someone with a bad mold allergy? I imagine most people apply sealer to the sink so water doesn't get into the cabinets drawers below, or is this a matter of avoiding wood cabinets altogether with any sink?
Why the most elegant and relatively the most demanding way of building in the sink is not mentioned - it is the building the sink in level with working surface - the composite sinks and stainless sinks could be build in the kitchen in that way and if made properly it give amazing effect.
Hello, video with a lot of information. Thank you. But it’s time to upload a newer video including Topzero Flush mount sink.
Honestly I’ve never met a rep from TopZero and I don’t know where I can take video of it. I’ve heard of it but I can’t make a video recommending a product I’ve never seen.
I learned a lot, thank you! Question: how impact resistant are those fireclay sinks?
That’s a great question. Thank you for asking. The short answer is they’re very resistant. They’re the same material all the way through. They’re baked to a much higher temperature than cast-iron. Here’s a little demonstration for you. vm.tiktok.com/J8A7a84/
@@RemodelMedia Thank you! That makes my decision much easier! I love the look of those apron front fireclay's, but didn't know if I was trading good looks for wimpy material.... looks strong enough to me!!! You're very helpful, much appreciated!

He did not talk about maintenenceof the composite. That is the one thing I was interested in finding out. I had a composite granite sink. That was fantastic thanks. I’m not sure anyone makes the kind of sink I want. Small bowl not stainless steel, not liable to cracking, not under hanging. I would like one that overlaps the kitchen counter so no mucky bits accumulate, with an integral splash back. I’m in France if anyone knows if this even exists. The current sink is tiny and I’d like a tiny one to replace it. Thanks anyway for a great video so informative.
