  • Today, we are trying our luck at coin roll hunting Canadian pennies. Ever since Canada ceased productions of their one cent coins in 2012, rolls like this have been hard to find. I was lucky enough to have one amazing fan, Van Island Coins, who sent me some Canadian penny rolls to search through. Let's see what's inside these discontinued rolls!

Canadian Coin Collector here! I can tell you my experience in coin roll hunting is quite dissapointing. Even when pennies were in regular circulation, it was extremly rare to find anything before the 1960s in rolls. This is especially true in Nickel and Dime rolls, usually I dont find anything before the 1970s, with the rare late 1960s founded in rolls. I've never found any 1967 nickels or dimes in rolls. Occasionally I have found American coins in rolls, but its not that common to find. Canada has different laws than America when it comes to coin melting. Canada's Currency Act of 1985, Section 11.1 says that no one is allowed to melt or break coins unless that person has a licence granted by the Minister of Finance. The Royal Canadian Mint (The Emblem you found on the newer coins) regularly melts down coins, especially pennies, to either make new coins or to collect the raw copper to make other things. Hence why its difficult to find older coins in Canadian rolls. Happy Hunting!

I just CRH some nickels 2 hours ago and found 11 George V and 8 George VI nickels along with 4 1967's. But this was just an outlier, usually, I find 1 George VI and 2 from the '50s and loads from the '60s (65-68's).
A month ago, I found 12 silver 1968 quarters too! (only 50% silver though). I never can find silver/old coins metal detecting in my small town, but in the rolls, I've gotten lucky.

I am sitting in Newfoundland right now. The divorce from Britain was ahem,, messy. Basically Britain gave Newfoundland to Canada in exchange for cancelling money borrowed from Canada during WW II. With one exception,,,,,,,, The Queen of England still owns and controls something like 99 percent of Newfoundland and Labrador. When they speak of Crown Lands here that is what is being referred to. You can long term lease or homestead/ purchase,, arcane rules govern. For instance,, Need firewood to heat the house? Get an annual permit to cut in designated areas, cut what you need.
People may not understand the ease and speed of doing without pennies. If the bill comes to,, say 5.13,,, you hand 5.15.. If the bill is 5.12,, you hand 5.10 Really simple. Pennies are not needed.

In Canada, it is very hard to acquire penny boxes that are not already searched, because the government doesn't want you putting them into circulation when your done with them ( the bank will only let have a box if you bring it back to a bank to be stored) so you don't know if your box has been searched or not.

Hi. Newfoundland did not join Canada until 1949. Up until then, Nfld was still a British colony. Hence, your 1942 coin would be considered "foreign". You may also be interested to know that the Newfoundlanders were divided as to joining either Canada or the USA. It was a close call and could have gone either way.

  • @kevinhanna162

In this video you were saying the New Found land penny wasn't a Canadian penny. New Found Land is a province of Canada, so it is a Canadian penny. The same as a PEI, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. We call those Provinces "Maritime Provinces".

Those rolls are NOT typical. But, I love Canadian cents. I have been working on my small Canadian cent collection. To add to the chase, I am doing it with coins I find in US cent rolls. I live on a border state so those are fairly common here, but completing the collection is a challenge. I expect that many of the dates of the George V series are going to have to be bought when I find all the rest.

Yeah that’s for sure. I’ve only found one KG5 ever and it was in my first box of American pennies! They are basically in-doable without buying at least some, but the KG6’s are a different story!

    • @jppagetoo

@@QuinsCoins Yeah. KG5's are rare, I have a couple that were given to me. KG6's, I find fairly often. I live in Michigan (like you). So canadian coins are part of the money we get. So I am having a fun time doing Canadian cents from US roll hunting. That is the challenge, not completing the set by purchasing coins.

I have UNC. Rolls of Canadian cents: 1967, 1975, 1976, 1977, and 2012. And found errors, and varieties in them as well. If you would like one each of these Canadian cents for your book let me know? I would be glad to send you them.

You need to get the up to date Whitman book (4049). It will have all the Canada 1 Cents to 2012. It's $3.99 US. And go over all the coin after 2006 as some are zink ( non mag ) and the item under the queen is RCM 2006-2012.

I do have to chuckle the way you pronounce Newfoundland. It is pronounced like "new FUND land". My dad used to live there. He became a U.S, citizen 'way back, though. BTW, he gave me about 10 of the pennies, but all but one were lost in a move years ago.

Just back from the north boarder of Idaho, very hard to to get Canadian money like you use to. Banks will not allow use of it anymore. Can only get bills by ordering. Shot of going into Canada. Did not have the time to do. Was able to get from a few stores and from a French Canadian lady on vacation in the US. Also got some very old bills. Was so happy on the finds, people were so more helpful in Idaho, then people in my home state of Kansas. 😍

lol these rolls are not weird they are very common here and way more user friendly: you don't need to count the coins before putting em in. Inside the roll, nesr the tip, you will se a tiny little plastic hub. The last coin you put in pushes the hub flat so you know for sure you filled the entire roll (doesnt work with the george vi : these coins are thicker and you can only fit 45 in a roll). Concerning the "lego thing" on the top, there is actually a reason for that too: when you close the roll, you are supposed to hit the "lego things" on a table and the little pins will become flat and you won't be able to open to roll anymore. But nobody does it as you can see with the roll you got.

Hi Quin that is a centennial $1.only made in 1967 not that rare but it is unique. The most beautiful coin made in 67 was the goose silver Dollar not that rare but 50% silver. The plastic wrappers come from the store supposed to make it easy to wrap. Newfoundland became part of Canada in 1949 I have been searching threw pennies since around 1971 and never found one i believe back then you could spend them in Canada. You would never find those George v pennies in circulation in Canada but they are easy to get at coin shops you can spend US coins no exchange rate.

Canadian here. Back in the 1970s I would occasionally see a George V penny in my change. Never bothered keeping them, as I was not interested in coins very much back then. George VI pennies were fairly common in the 1970s and into the 1980s. Found a Victoria large penny in the dirt one time, back in the late 1960s.

Our 67 goose dollar is actually 80% silver.. It was the 67 quarters and dimes that had less silver content.. (well, some of the quarters were less) It got complicated for some of quarters and dimes from 1968 and 1967. Some were silver and some not. Some 67 quarters had more silver than the others and without testing you can't tell from looking at them. Personally the best silver dollar is the 1948. Rare.
