- In this video I go over my first impressions of the engine tune and then am able to add some insight after one month.
This is the APR Stage 1 Low Torque 91 Octane engine tune in a manual transmission 2020 VW GLI. No other mods have been made to the car.
With a little (or a lot) of inspiration from Jeremy Clarkson, I channel some Top Speed.

Great video buddy ! I don’t need to see a dyno to see a huge improvement in acceleration as results are truly evident. Car manufacturers tune most cars at a sweet spot between performance vs. fuel economy therefore they are never at their optimum on both sides of the equation. Excellent video, audio and content quality. Cheers 🍻 Eddie
Thanks so much for your comment. I really appreciate it. I had fun making this one. 👍
The final footage showing the Livewire acceleration is the bomb 💣! Electric engines respond to acceleration immediately! Pretty cool
Such an awesome bike for many reasons. I did my review of the Livewire last year. Did you check out that video? Thanks again for your comment.
@@UrAvgRider I can’t remember but I will check it out
Mk7 VW GLI is already awesome in stock form .. I bet the stage 1 tune really takes this car to an Audi S3 level of awesomeness!
Thanks so much for your comment. Yes, I agree.
Awesome! Thx a lot for such a great video... I wish more people on UA-cam would provide such useful information 🍻🍻🍻
Thank you so much for your comment. I really appreciate that.
@@UrAvgRider for about a year I was reluctant to go for Stg1LT with my 35th manual, but now i decided to do it. Thx!👍👍👍
That’s awesome. Glad I could help with that decision. Thanks again. And as an update, so far so good with the tune still.
Did you also watch my video on the spark plugs and coil packs? The spark plugs are recommend to be done with the engine tube. Thanks.
i’m getting this done in over a week, is there any increase in sound whether that’s from intake or from engine? hard to tell from video. great video btw, i can’t wait!!
Thanks so much for your comment. I really appreciate it. There was no increase in noise at all.
You said you would post a one year update. It has been a year and I just picked up a 2024 manual GLI, so an update would be relevant to my interests.
I will get to work on this. But I can tell you that it’s been great and I have no regrets.
Thanks so much for your comment.
Are you with stock clutch with this tune? If so, hows it holding?
Yes. Still the stock clutch. And so far so good. It’s holding up surprisingly well and I haven’t babied it. But I will still be adding air intake and exhaust and then I expect I’ll have to start saving for a performance clutch. Thanks so much for your comment.
I just bought one. A 21 GLI. 6 speed. How do i go about getting this tune?
Thanks so much for your comment. I went on APR’s website and found an official dealer in my area.
How is your clutch holding up?
Excellent question. No issues yet. Most days I drive normal, but I’ve had some hard launches too. I believe the tune limits power delivery while in first gear. And then around 4000rpm in second and third gears the car really throws you back in your seat. Thanks for your question.
hey bro how many miles did you get it after and does it void the cars warranty let me know. doe the 0-60 get better? if not do you recommend doing high torque version. how much does is cost
All great questions. I had approximately 17,500 miles (28,000 km) when I had the tune installed. It does void the warranty and I voided mine. That’s what I waited 2 years before doing it. I figured if there was a problem with the car it should have shown up by then. Acceleration is noticeably improved. In every gear. Do I recommend the high torque? That depends. If you have DSG, get the high torque. If you have manual, are you planning on changing the clutch sooner than later? At the moment, APR states $450 USD. So depending where you are, roughly that. If you have the DSG, count on spending another $450 for the DSG tune as well. Thank you for your comment.
@@UrAvgRider thanks for ur reply, im a bit confused why you said i need another one for dsg 450 dollars. I have a dsg gli. Does that mean i have to spend 900? Im confused. Apr plus is also another option
That is correct. $900 total. I know the DSG tune changes the shift points. APR lists a bunch of benefits on their website. But it is not required. But because the DSG can handle the high torque tune, I would at least get that.
@@UrAvgRider what about just getting apr plus till the warranty gets closed?
