Get the video course. Absolutely worth it. I ditched my pool guy and have been following this program for the last two years and my pool chemistry and water has been fantastically maintained. I’m too lazy to clean my DE filter so I get a pool guy every six months to do that. Saved me thousands of dollars.
With being a novice to the inground pool community, your videos help us so much! The pool company ran through all of this upon opening/ cleaning our pool, and of course I've forgotten everything LOL, so needless to say your pool tutorials are a life saver! SUBSCRIBED!!! Thank you so much for this!
This is the best and most straight forward video I’ve found about pool shocking. Although, I don’t agree with everything, for example, I live in Tampa bay, the US capital of lightning storms. If I followed rules 5 (at 3:15, shock after a heavy rain) and 6 (at 3:26, shock after extremely sunny or hot weather), I would have to shock the pool almost every day starting from mid Spring to the end of Fall, lol.
Hi. Certificated pool technician here. As long as you are keeping your stabilizer levels at around 80ppm, you should be fine with just shocking once a week regardless of weather or anything else for that matter.
Great video! When shocking your pool should you turn the In-line chlorinator off? I notice when i add one bag of shock to my 15,000 gallon pool it take several days before the Free Chlorine gets back down to 3ppm
Right!? How often do you shock? I'm also in Florida. Buying a home with a pool and will be a first time pool owner. I'm determined to not have to hire a pool person. 🙂
@@kuyuke You're going to spend more at your local pool store than paying a pro. Hire a pro until you fully understand chemicals and why shocking weekly is a waste of $.
My pool was installed 4 years ago and we keep it open year around. It has always been Crystal clear and have never been shocked. As a matter of fact we have only added salt and baking soda each year, nothing else. Easy peasy!
Thank you. I will clean the filters and run the pump longer. I can’t vacuum to waste because the of the cartridge filters I can only take them out and hose them down. Would a clarifier help or more liquid chlorine?
Can you do a video unless you have one already that explains everything to do after your pool is installed and pool has water- for a Day 1 after install new pool owner
When would you use non chlorinated shock and other than not raising the chlorine level, does it serve the same purpose? (I do have a salt water pool but prefer to use the granulated shock over the generator 😉)
Thoses shock treatment are sold in small plastic bags. If I use granular chlorine bucket is it the same product? seems to me but I wanna make sure. I also use chlorinator with pucks for daily dose.
If you buy the bulk bucket it should tell you what % it is. Either way, it should tell you how many oz's per thousands of gallons. usually its going to be anywhere between 1-2 lbs. I service pools and I usually shock weekly during the summer, but the amount of shock also varies depending on pool usage and size. Heavily used pools get more than recommended dosage.
Thanks for the video! Do I need to remove my suction-side pool cleaner during the shock? If so, I imagine I need to completely disconnect it from the pool wall and leave it out so that it doesn't try to run when the filter is on right? I appreciate the help.
I used both which ever is cheaper or easier to get. I always have mixed it in a bucket first when it’s a granular/Crystal/powder. Less break down time with liquid.
Hi! Cheers from Panama in central America, ok right now we are in summer and every day the sun is very 🔥 HOT 🔥 How should I shock my pool? I have a salt water pool. I'll add 1lb shock about every 6 wks. But...its only my husband and I who use the pool. If ur pool is used by more people, shock it once a month.
If you shock weekly your going to have to drain the water by the end of the season every year. Shock only when needed once a month if you can’t keep up on it
In general, can I use sodium hypochlorite as a shock if I normally use muriatic acid to reduce pH? I know they should never be mixed together or added at the same time.. but I want to know if I'll have any issues long term by using them in my pool. Your videos are great very helpful
In south Florida, if the temperatures are hovering around 75 degrees and sometimes below that during the colder months of December-January, can I get away with shocking every 2 weeks, instead of every week? I’m adding 2.5 pounds of liquid chlorine a week at the moment. Would like to use less if possible. Also, I am keeping my CYA (stabilizer) levels at around 80ppm.
My pool water is Green and can't seem to get it clear after a bag of shock. I backflush the filter twice a day and I still can't get it clear. Should I use two bags of shock?
Hello Swim University, I have a SWG Intex pool, 14,364 gallons. I have a SWG that came with the pool(it produces 11g of chlorine/hr) and it has a "boost" mode where it simply runs the chlorinator for 36, 48, or 60 hours. If so, then I have a follow up question. I would like to use this boost mode to shock my pool if possible(since it wouldn't require me buying bags of chlorine) but it seems impractical to boost my chlorinator which takes 36 hours to do(and me not being able to use it due to elevated ppm levels), and THEN once the chlorinator turns off to wait even more time for my free chlorine numbers to go back down to 3ppm. I would lose almost 2 days of swimming every week, unless i'm calculating something wrong. What would you do if you were me and wanted to use your pool almost daily? thanks.

Many factors go into it however at 100° with people in and out of it every couple days you should be able to get by with two weeks then will need to shock it.
No you don’t have to. Get a water testing kit. If you just filled up your pool with tap water it will last a solid week. The best thing anyone ever told me was buy a chlorinator. Since I’ve installed I dont have to worry about chlorine or being clear. Little baking soda or soda ash. 3 red solo cups every 2-3 week. Half bottle of Algecide every 3 weeks. Also look for filter socks. If keeps the sand clean that filters your pool. Once a week don’t forget to backwash for 30 seconds and rinse for 15 seconds. That basically is like scraping the head off of the top of a Guinness. Takes all that nasty sand and crap out! Good luck! Oh and remember swim as much as possible. Walk in circles or around perimeter of pool. It’s stirs up everything chemical wise that you put in and stuff that needs to make it to the skimmer. Go have fun!
quick question... when I shock my chlorine level is still high for days after including use and rain.. should I add maintenance pucks or am I good too go till it lowers
I was told by my plasterer (I have a new pool...2 months old now) NOT to use shock the first year as this is bad for new plaster. Have you heard anything like this?
I have an in-ground salt water pool, and I know that the iChlor system will produce chlorine on it's own through electrolysis so I should not need to add chlorine to the pool. However, in the winter the water gets too cold for the iChlor to work. Is it recommended to shock the pool regularly with chlorinated shock during the winter months? I watched my pool go from crystal clear to dark green in the matter of a few days as soon as the indicator light on the iChlor that it was no longer producing chlorine.
I shocked my pool last night, but realized it needed more water (about 3 inches). So I filled it. I'm guessing that was a mistake - - throwing off the shock. Now there is algae in the pool. Can you plz confirm? Thx!
when shocking your pool should you refrain from other chemical needs of your pool? For instance if you need to shock but Ph is low can you do both at the same time or do you need to wait? If you need to wait how long after shock do you need to wait?
Do you need to shock your pool if the levels are always nicely balanced? Like I check my chlorine levels weekly and it's totally fine. The salt cell generates chlorine on it's own. Pool is always crystal clear. I also vaccum my pool at least once a week.
I've watched enough of your videos and I'm ready to make a purchase but do I need to get both your handbook pool subscription and also the spa/hot tub or does 1 cover both. I'll make my purchase as soon as u answer me. Ty u in advance.
If filled with tap water you will start to see that it’s lost it’s chlorine. You need to shock it liquid or powder. Then put in that clear balance. Read the bottle. Do both after the direct sunlight is off the pool. Shock one night and used clear balance the next. Good luck.
I can't find chlorine tablets anywhere!! But shock is readily available (and not at a sky high price either). Possible to just add less pool shock granules on a daily basis rather than a floating chlorine tablet holder? Any advice in this regard?
We have a 10ft above ground pool. I have been using 20g multifunctional chlorine tablets in a floating dispenser in it, and have tested the levels every day, most to all levels are ok, but the cyanuric acid level is high. We have tried draining some water out and replacing it but it’s still high. Someone has suggested using chlorine shock in. Will this help? If so what is the best thing to get (we are in the UK), and how much do we use? It’s 10ft diameter, 2.5ft deep and holds around 1250 gallons of water.
Possibly using too many tabs. Only way to lower cya level is dilution but it’s not linear. Keep vac’ing to waste and give it long backwashes. Consider using non-stabilised tabs for a bit.
I have noticed that the little granulars do not all dissolve in the bucket, will the hurt my pool liner if it stays on the bottom? Thanks for all of the Great Videos.
My pool water turns cloudy every time I add chlorine either shocking or using my salt generator why is that? I can’t seem to get it to turn clear it’s now a teal color.
It's very common for shock to turn the water cloudy. It killed off contaminants. Clean and run your filter for 24 hours. You could also use a flocculant to remove the cloudy, dead particles (if you can vacuum on the waste setting)
Always follow the directions on your pool shock, but in general: no, you can't. However, adding shock directly to the pool water (especially if you have a vinyl liner) can be can cause issues so be sure to pre-dissolve it if the directions say to do that.
Adam V thanks for getting back to me I’m going to by your book after watching more videos, I think your channel is the best channel for pool education and I’m hoping your ebook is equally informative. Cheers, Wes
Someone told me a photometer also measures total chlorine which test strips cannot do. If your total chlorine is high, then your free chlorine cant work and means your pool is full of dead chlorine. So are they saying the test strips are useless because you can’t test total chlorine? I always thought that as long as test strips says your free chlorine is at 3ppm then that means it’s above total chlorine and everything is ok? OR.. Is it in fact possible for the test strips to read ok at 3ppm free chlorine but total chlorine can still be higher rendering the 3ppm free chlorine useless?

Is it possible to shock too much?
Always follow the directions on your pool shock, but in general: no, you can't. However, adding shock directly to the pool water (especially if you have a vinyl liner) can be can cause issues so be sure to pre-dissolve it if the directions say to do that.
@@SwimUniversity But if it says its safe to broad cast the shock into the pool i should be OK right?
@@wesleymcgonagle3394 if you sprinkle it while equipment is running, it is usually okay, but if you have a colored pool or vinyl it could discolor it.
Too much of anything is bad, overly using shock can increase chlorine to harmful levels and even make water cloudy (thanks to added calcium)
Adam V thanks for getting back to me I’m going to by your book after watching more videos, I think your channel is the best channel for pool education and I’m hoping your ebook is equally informative.
Cheers, Wes
Help! I filled my pool with well water, shocked it and its very green from the copper in my water
Following!
Me too!
Avoid using ground sourced water for pools unless you have a filter. TDS will be high and filtration will struggle.
@@nuntana2 there on videos on here of homemade filters that are excellent! In two days we had perfectly clear water!
I have a pool that I had to fill with well water. I finally got it clear ,Will shocking it turn it green or brown? I have read that it will
You should use a hose filter when filling with well water....
Do you know if your well water has high metal content? If you're worried add metal sequestering agent before shocking
If you are using non chlorine free pool shock do you still need to add chlorine?
Do you have to shock your pool if it’s brand new
??????
My chlorine is really high now after shocking is there a way to bring it down so family can swim in it?
Same
But I think u just have to wait
Someone told me a photometer also measures total chlorine which test strips cannot do. If your total chlorine is high, then your free chlorine cant work and means your pool is full of dead chlorine. So are they saying the test strips are useless because you can’t test total chlorine?
I always thought that as long as test strips says your free chlorine is at 3ppm then that means it’s above total chlorine and everything is ok?
OR.. Is it in fact possible for the test strips to read ok at 3ppm free chlorine but total chlorine can still be higher rendering the 3ppm free chlorine useless?
Correct. They don’t show total/chloramines. Test strips are ok as a general indicator but are not great for pools.
