  • Erik Satie's Gnossienne No.1 arranged for contrabassoon solo and 4 bassoons. Played here in the outer reaches of the universe on a French Contrabassoon by Buffet Crampon. The bassoon is also a Buffet, a lovely early 19th century example.
Thanks to someone commenting on a previous video of mine for the suggestion ‪@gardensofthegods‬ !! How's that for an interactive channel?!

Just can't believe my now adult son sent me this and told me how much he enjoyed my "forcing" him to listen to different types of music than his friends were listening to at the time. When he was rebelling against me at the time, I thought he was just shutting it all out. Now I find out that he especially enjoyed the bassoon. Wish I had tried to "force" him into learning to play an instrument instead of just listening.

don''t suppose he rebelled enough to say how much a contrabassoon actually costs?

I think Satie himself would wholeheartedly approve this kind of curious reinterpretation of his work.

I can't (and don't want to) hear this piece any other way now.

This is my psychiatrist's theme song when he doles out the "Prozac".

It makes Satie more monstrous but less distressing.

I love the sound of the French contra. Do you have plans to make more contra videos? I'd love to hear more of it.

Thank you very much, there's more in the pipeline. I'm working on a new composition for solo contra which should be coming in the next few days :)

Amazing! Did you buy the original piece and transpose this yourself, or is there a version out there somewhere? I happen to have some low clarinets at my disposal... :)

This is so cool to hear because more often that not, when playing contra, the idea is for me to be loud, Mahler-loud, or Shosti loud, or even Beethoven loud. Last week I played Brahms 3, which is different, and let's just say I wish I had worked on the type of sound you get here. It's earthy and complex. You make the attacks seem light and easy, but you can tell there's plenty of potential power. Let me just ask: in a nutshell, what would you say about a French vs. German contra in terms of sound quality, playability?

This contra can purr and it can growl, it sometimes feels like a wild animal. I love the different colours in the sound. Buffet actually copied the bore from Heckel for their modern contras, although a lot of other things are different. The Bubinga wood is more dense than the maple used in German contras and the layout of the joints is different. You've also got the closed low B tone hole which makes a difference to the sound. They stopped making these back in the early 2000s due to a lack of demand. I just don't get why people wouldn't want to play instruments like this.

    Bonjour
Bravo pour cette lecture originale de cette pièce de Satiété.
La couleur sombre du contrebasson donne ici un caractère mystérieux à ce morceau. Bravo pour cette lecture.

@@HowardDann didn't mean to make it sound rude. English is a foreign language to me, and "i guess" in the end was added to make it sound like my personal opinion.
Sheet says, that tempo is lent, that means 50-58 BPM and yours is 56 BPM, which is OK. But for my concrete ear this concrete piece played with this concrete instrument is too fast. It lost all the dynamics. IMHO.
