Beyond the edge of the world there’s a space where emptiness and substance neatly overlap, where past and future form a continuous, endless loop. And, hovering about, there are signs no one has ever read, chords no one has ever heard.
For me this music evokes an emotion that I cannot define. Not happy, not sad, not fear, not anger, not desolate. Some eerie type of formless emotion that is neither positive or negative that I don't want to stop listening. An emotion from another dimension that lurks deep inside the gray universe inside my skull.
I found this Gnosienne: a moment of awareness that someone you’ve known for years still has a private and mysterious inner life, and somewhere in the hallways of their personality is a door locked from the inside, a stairway leading to a wing of the house that you’ve never fully explored-an unfinished attic that will remain maddeningly unknowable to you, because ultimately neither of you has a map, or a master key, or any way of knowing exactly where you stand.
Unlike half the pianists that have done this on UA-cam these guys actually got the actual tempo right. Subdued, mysterious, LENTO. And the violin improv totally got be by surprise!
I'm from Sarajevo and Gnosienne 1 always reminds me of having a slow, late afternoon coffee at one of the points overlooking Sarajevo and contemplating life, because it sounds as if that's excactly what Eric was doing when he composed it. This version I hear now for the first time and it just reinforced that feeling :)
Then find it in Buenos Aires where the tango is so perfectly performed in awesome tango shows, or even on the streets for extra money to feed a family.
One of my favourite performances online. I’ve watched this countless times. The arrangement is so interesting and it’s great to see how the accordionist partners with the violinist. Just a great master class in chamber music. Thank-you.
1:21 this part absolutely sends shivers down my spine. It is so beautiful, look at the little twitch of emotion on his face, the violin sounds like it is telling me a story
This is for those Saturday or Sunday afternoons when the temperature is just right and through the open windows you sit and feel the breeze and fall into remembrance of your life. Those moments when time seems to stand still, even as the shadows lengthen and move across your vision. People and experiences that cannot ever be recovered and yet feel so palpable in those moments. A trance. A surreal experience!
What Seth Ford-Young did was to creatively blow a new life on an already celebrated masterpiece. His rendition is sets the reincarnation of Satie's beautifully testament of mystery and caprice, in the hands of apt, free and passionate gypsies travelling through the French fields to borrowing inescapably personal accordion. All the solos flow freely over the ever faithful pillars of the syncopated guitars strung peacefully, smiling on its adopted children dancing, running within the harmonic structure its sets or simply follows. Beautiful! Thank you for this gift Seth
Clearly you people haven’t listened to enough accordion music. People are unaware that the accordion can play the most beautiful pieces in the baroque and classical repertoire. Making a mockery of the instrument comes from the view that it is a cheesy instrument. There are many gifted players around the world who play classical repertoire. The accordion isnt all polkas and Lawrence Welk tunes. It can all be seen on you tube.
I have touched nirvana. This is an absolutely phenomenal rendition of this piece. What I have always imagined myself hearing walking through Verona, Italy during the turn of the century. Thank you !
was very skeptical about this, since the whole point of Satie is his minimalism and this piece is all about that. But having heard this, its amazing and very emotive. hope to hear more from these guys. very nice piece. play it in the car on the way to work and think about happier times.
I love Gnossienne and how diffent musicians play it on so many different instruments. This version is quite unique with its unusual tango like interpretation. Brilliant.
I never before knew this music, Erik Satie, Seth Ford-Young, any of it. It came one afternoon to me as "random" pick via Pandora. I was totally unprepared for what moved thru me, upon listening to this melody and then surrendering to it. I wept so deeply and fully. It was all at once disturbing and true InJoyment. A story was unfolding within me. This music fused with and has become a part of me. I Love this Life experience soooo much! The Sentient Body that I Am Thanks you so much Porto Franco for posting this!❤❤❤
I think this master piece from Satie, is showing how our regular, daily lives, shaping us in a way of pity. I can see my and every other person's life in pity, monotone and in black-white. Doing the same things all over again. This version just adds more kick to it. Brilliant.
I am always stunned by this version of a stunning piece of art. These guys are just incredible. How to evoque the silence, the gravity, the shift between the violin and the accordion. Mesmerizing. I cry a little each time.
I always come back to watch this. It has been years now since i first discovered this marvelous performance. And I watch and listen to it at least once every month. It transports me to a world i wish i could live in forever. thank you for this beautiful gift.
I'm feeling the Hungarian gypsy vibe throughout this. Also sounds like a Jewish Lament. It's amazing. None of these things are outside what Satie intended in my opinion. Luv and Peace.
Such a fantastic performance! Congratulations to all these wonderful and super talented men. I enjoy this so much, every time I hear it, and just can't get tired of hearing it...I need to be careful! Its addictive....
Just went I think I've heard the most captivating rendition of this piece, along comes another to keep it company, all with their own special flavor and intrigue.
Have Seth's album -- wonderful. Love Satie, and it is so amazing to see this piece performed live. It's a composition that already defines a distinctive sense of space -- but these musicians really occupy that space and make it something special. Thank you.
Sooo cool, I've never heard music like this, where have I been hiding, yes. You guys are great, I loved every second. Gonna get my violin out again, I've been learning this on classical guitar and stumbled on this vid, it's on my likes list forever now. Thanks for sharing your talent to the world.
This the sexiest, most beautiful rendition of Satie's Gnossienne No.1 ever! Please come to Austin Texas and play for us... this is perfection! Thank you!
I do not know why. The music of Erik Satie, takes me on a journey. My soul, my spirit they all disappear. I experience the most diverse feelings. This brilliant, wonderful music goes into the deepest parts of my heart, my soul. I have never experienced that a piece of music touches me so much in my heart that it always moves me to tears. No matter how many times I have heard it. The music is not of this world. Dear Erik Satie, Wherever you may be now, know that you have left a great gift to us humans. I imagine that you enjoy watching us enjoy your music. Thank you for your beautiful gift.
A very interesting rendition of a magnificent piece of music. Masterfully performed. Not sure weather Satie would appreciate but being French, he probably would have.
Love... love... love... I've been playing this and the next three Gnossiennes on the piano for a couple of years, and you've inspired me to revisit it with the looper pedal. A truly brilliant performance; time just falls away each time I listen. Erik would approve.
Somewhere beyond the veil, Erik Satie is smiling.

This is the best version of Gnossienne No 1 in my mind, so haunting. It plays on my heart strings, makes me long for the country of my ancestors.

All of you must come to Mexico so we can drink a coffee together while looking the sunset :P
Satie wrote this in 1865. I wonder if he ever thought that in 2024 a girl like me would be listening to it and thinking about him. So perfect!
This arrangement has a strong Gypsy feel to it. I can almost hear Nicolae Neacsu singing in the background.
Its no wonder Tod likes it.
I was going with eastern Europe, but gypsy works too. I see tango dancers with this version.
klezmer maybe
