  • June Allyson and Jimmy Stewart present the award for Best Actress in a Motion PIcture Drama to Whoopi Goldberg for her role in "The Color Purple". Whoopi exclaimed, "This is the stuff you dream about. I'm not going to lie. I've never seen all these people before!" She thanks everybody at Warner Brothers, who took a big chance with her, Steven Spielberg, Bill Hurt, Judith Ivey, Oprah Winfrey, Bruce Willis, Cher, Maryl Streep and Diane Carol for inspiring her. She finishes by saying "Hattie McDaniel, here is it".

I rented this movie in 2004 on DVD and watched it on a Saturday night with my mother. And I swear... You GO somewhere, with these kinds of movies. You’re transported to an entirely different life with these characters, that when you come out of it you can’t believe it’s only been 2 hours. This movie is one of the greats.

I feel the same, but with Cher, Streep and Page in the running, and this being Ms. Goldberg's first major movie role, It would've been impossible for Whoopi to win the Oscar. All the other actresses had been in the movie industry for years and their respective movie studios had launched huge campaigns in their favor, and also Geraldine Page had lost 7x's before so it was her time. and the Color Purple was just a stepping stone to Whoopi, she would eventually get the Oscar, although it was for her comedy timing not her dramatic skills.

She won the Golden Globe over Geraldine, she should have taken home the Oscar too. Her performance was LEAP YEARS ahead of Geraldine's, who basically won it for being old. Even after multiple viewings I get astonished at how Whoopie BECAME Celie, and was able to convey so much through her eyes and body language, without even uttering much. One of the best performances I've ever seen.

Whoopi Goldberg's performance in the color purple was great and I have seen that movie many times it is one of my all-time favorites, a better overall picture than trip to bountiful. We should stop demanding feeling entitled. Start with yourself and do the best to move people…..not demanding fairness and equality and this award should have gone to him or her whatever. The Color Purple is a timeless masterpiece for everyone, not just a specific race. It’s not about getting an award because you’re black or Asian or Indian. The greatest award is if your movie is still being aired on TV after so many years or if it’s being shown in schools or forums or discussed.

Meryl Streep holds the record for the most nominations...by far. Well deserved and she certainly does not need validation by more wins. She is the most successful female film star in history. That cannot be disputed. And the continues to top herself, soon to get her 18th nomination for August Osage County.

This was one of the first nationally broadcast Golden Globe ceremonies, for prior to this it was only seen locally in LA. It was also a time when the top commercially viable film actors didn't mingle with television performers, so Meryl Streep, Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close and Kathleen Turner didn't attend even though they were nominated.

Everyone saying that Whoopi deserved the Best Actress Oscar that year fail to remember that it was nominated for 11 Oscars and won zero; that's a dubious record it holds to this day with The Turning Point (1977). Furthermore, Spielberg wasn't even nominated for Best Director.
The 1985 Best Actress line up was exceptionally strong - and truth be told, Cher should have been nominated for Mask over Anne Bancroft. But Geraldine Page's performance was exceptional in a role of someone yearning to see their former home just one more time. I think many who dismiss this win probably haven't watched the film.

i disagree the great Anne Bancroft deserved her nomination so go pick on someone else

@@hardsam68 I never said Anne Bancroft didn't deserve her Oscar nomination; I said The Turning Point received 11 Oscar nominations and won none.

Actually Geraldine page is an incredible actor and it was "past due" for her to get this Oscar. I so happy to hear she got the Oscar finally!

She should have been the first black woman to win the Best Actress Oscar (not Halle, although I love her). I think her career would have been different.
What a racist time in Hollywood... hasn’t changed that much?? 🤷🏽‍♂️
