- Are you using this compression feature?
Filtering a compressors side chain or detection circuit can dramatically improve the low-end impact of your music. I use this technique when compressing drums, mixes and any signal with a lot of low or sub frequencies.

I know you work in fl. I assume Fruity limiter and compressor doesn't have these abilities? Ergo, I'd have to use external compressors?
How can i send you messages for help when mastering my beats ?
off topic - any recommendation for headphones for fps gaming?
Michael, without your expert clear timely instruction, I would not even be aware of these excellent polishing techniques. Thanks.
Mikieee 😆
Shorter tutorials that tackle one thing and are explained very well (as in this one) are so much more digestible and accessible for many producers who are short on time. Much appreciate this format. Keep it going and thanks. :D
I appreciate the feedback, thank you!
i actually have to agree, and putting all the effort to go down to comments and say something about it really should stand out for your amazing shorter tutorial, really good thank you
And this is why I don't wanna do UA-cams... ungrateful
Love these focused, short, but deep dives into a single process or effect. Always appreciate your insights!
yeah man these deep dives give so much understanding of things overall
The first time I discovered it I thought it applied less compression to the lower end. Thanks for clearing up my confusion!
Me too, it's not obvious until you dive a little deeper. Either way it sounds great!
I'm still not clear what happens to the frequencies out of the range? Are they ignored?
@@aldenfarias4873 Im not quite sure but i think the ammount of compression now depends on the loudness of things inside the filter. Compression is still applied to everything outside the filter too.
@@aldenfarias4873 the frequencies outside the range are still compressed but to a lesser degree. As these frequencies are not triggering any extra compression they will end up being compressed less
@@inthemix oh thanks
I will confess that coming from area where we don't have music schools, niether access to banks that we could pay fees to learn music online you've been of too much help to some of us. I almost gave up for music production but your channel have give healings to my life. Thanks so much 🙏
4:20 you answered the question that popped in my head seconds earlier, thank you
Nothing better than ending the day with your videos, Michael! Yet another great tip! Cheers! 🙂 ✌🏻
I was always wondering what this sidechain extension was exactly doing. Thanks for covering it.
And as always, your videos are incredibly helpful and I simply love everything about how you explain it - your calm voice, precise explanations, comparisons etc. Thanks for another amazing video, Michael!
You just clarified a whole lot about that sidechain compression, this whole time i thought the selected freq was the only thing being compressed. salute!
Helpfull, you say. This is a revelation for me. You have a way to explain thing like no other, cause I vision many vidéos from great audio engineer, you're one of the best. Never got a grasp of compression side-chaining like I do today. It's like a bright light has just open up. This will definitely change the way I do thing, from now on. Thanks a million.
This is incredibly useful, as always. Every time I watch a video from you, I learn something new! Easily one of the most educating channels on UA-cam.
4:23 That was my exact question. I've never heard anyone explain that so clearly. Great examples too. I really learned something new and important here. Thank you! Subbed.
Can you explain what's the difference? I didn't get it even after listening multiple times to what he says :/
@@azymval207 I'll give it a go man. 1:28 is key. The sidechain or detection circuit tells the compressor what part of the frequency spectrum to listen to in order to apply its compression, the other frequencies are ignored (but still compressed, remember that). Another way of thinking of this is, if you don't tell the compressor what part of the frequency spectrum to listen to, it will just listen to everything as equally important. Is that what you want? That may be good sometimes right; other times it can be bad, especially if you've a bass heavy track which has other instruments in mid-to-upper frequencies, like here: 1:08 There's such high peaks/transients in the bass the compressor deals with them first right before it gets to the other parts of the track which also hold importance but are at lower dbs, like the high-hat. It squashes the hell out of it. You can barely hear the high-hat. So tell the compressor through sidechain compression not to listen to the bass so much. Problem solved. Listen to from 2:58 in headphones if you can, the difference, as he toggles between the different states. How is this different from multiband compression? In multiband compression, you can select which parts of the frequency spectrum for the compressor to listen to and apply/not apply compression to for mutiple sections of the frequency range you've defined. With the use of the sidechain compression, everything is still going to be compressed whether you like it or not, but you've the ability to control what parts of the spectrum that the compressor listens to. I hope that helps.
That is absolutely inspiring! I always think that low filter means that compressor does not compress the lows, until today. Thank you so much again.
It's been a while since I've watched any of the videos in this channel as I've been away from music production, but now that I'm getting back I am once again amazed by the quality of these tutorials. Short, succinct, straight to the point, and delivered in a very pleasant way. Well done man, I wish more tutorials on YT were of that high a quality. I'll be frequenting this channel in the coming months that's for sure.
I've had a similar experience recently lol
I loved this video! As always, your explanations are very easy to understand. The short videos are great for busy days! I also enjoy your longer form breakdowns - so it's nice to have both available :)
Oh my WORD!! I’ve been conflicted about using the side chain for way too long for the same reasons everyone else already stated. I can’t thank you enough for clearing this up. If I could subscribe and hit the notification bell again I would do that. Cheers!
I've always been wondering how this kind of internal sidechaining would be useful. Thank you for the great explanation!
Love the format and the content. Short, sweet and to the point. Great job.
I've been mixing for almost 2 years and only now have realized I've been using sidechain completely wrong. Thank you again!
As usual, your tutorials are extremely easy and simple to understand. Thanks for being an amazing teacher Michael, have a great day!
I really like the shorter version for getting into that for the first time. Doesnt overload me with information that arent that important for beginners. If i get familiar with the technique i am sure thankful for the longer versions.
So helpful! Love the shorter format videos because it makes it more digestible and easier to apply the tip.
The absolute best producer tutor on the internet right here.
AWESOME, USEFUL, & HELPFUL Compression Trick Tutorial, @Michael In The Mix! ;) :)
Top notch video! I didn't know about this method, will definitely use this in Pro-C going forward and will look for implementations of this in other compressors.
One of my favorite videos so far. Great pacing and explanations. Great examples all the way throughout.
Very well explained! This is a complicated thing for beginners and you made it very simple to understand
This is the best explanation I've seen yet of this largely unknown technique. Great editing too. And yes, loving the short format. Well done!
Excellently helpful video! Got that "aha" moment that I just want to jump into my mixes and apply this technique.
Your videos are awesome man. Very clear, concise, and helpful. Keep it up. Probably my favorite music tutorial UA-camr out there right now! 👏👏👏
You have one of the best mixing channels: clear and exhaustive.
I just recently discovered it and i am hooked ;) keep up the great work!
I've grown so fond of these videos. I love the content you put out Michael
This is the video of the year about compression, so well explained and straight to the point. Thanks!
Love all your material! Really like this short version of usefull information. Keep it up!!!
Best wishes ever from Mendoza - Argentina🙌😜
OUI !! We love this. Keep on the good work.
thanks I immediately used this in my mix and now my my kick drum sounds much more how I want it to!
Ive been half assing compression for years and you literally just made it make sense in 1 video
I was convinced indeed that compression wasn't applied to excluded frequency. You just opened up a portal of opportunities! Thanks bro!
Definitely like the short videos (in addition to the longer ones)! Easy to fit into my day and I learned something useful!
i gotta say your video quality has improved a lot since the last time i watched your channel! keep it up man
Yes, this kind of short instruction videos are great for learning! 🙏🏼
Thank you for all your helpful videos! I'm just getting reacquainted with this stuff after a long break from it and they've been a Godsend. Cute dog as well!
Thanks for all the Input every week, i really learned so much about music thanks to you. Im getting better every week and its so much fun
this is super dope! had no idea! also i'm a huge fan of your dog :D
you're so good at explaining things
Thanks Asher!
Been looking to improve my bass mixing.
Thank you for this video :)
Huh, the penny just dropped. I've been messing around with this for a while without really knowing what I was doing. You've described it really well. Subscribed.
Very well explained, Mike! Since the day I touched the world of audio I've always found your tutorials to be the most precise, technically to the point, and as detailed as it can be without any BS at all!
It would be really great if you could make some tutorials about some more hard-core techy topics such as Acoustics, Analog circuits, patchbays and all. After some years well spent in "in-the-box" world, I am studying Acoustics for an year and never found reliable information (found, and then found it was useless, or incomplete, or factually incorrect, adn the series never ends). Would love to learn something from you on these topics!
Just to add a little bit, Ableton's native compressor ALSO have this feature and you can choose the filter type as well as the freq and Q. Excellent video, it's always good to remember this feature.
would love to see a tutorial with ableton's native compressor
oh wow thats a very useful trick i would have never thought of. your videos always teach me something new. i love your uploads man :]
Always learning something new from you. Cheers!
This is so subtle but so dramatic. Thank you.
I've learned SO MUCH from this channel. Thank you so much man! Keep it up
Love this! Lots of info in a short amount of time.
Your work always appreciable ... Thanks for lessons
I’ve always enjoyed the knowledge you bring, but don’t find myself watching your videos often. Usually because they’re too long.
This video was great, i learned something new and im sure i wont forget it because it’s easy to digest. More of this please!
Totally helpful. Amazing and thank you so much for sharing this tip. For me this is the best video so far for 2022
Thank you 🙏🏻!
You can't imagine how helpful this tutorial was for me!
This was the Cheer of The Day. Thanks for the video In The Mix
Hi Michael, yes please, more of these short vids. They pack so much punch ;)
Awesome video mate! Keep up the great work.
Great video!, so understandable, very well explained, thank you!
You are gifted to teach, bro. Keep up the good job ! Very interesting tuto and very well explained.
Great video, really good explanation of internal sidechains in compressors. Pro-C is great because not only does it give you more control, but gives you a solid visual reputation of what is going on.
i like how you answered the question i was thinking about as i was watching you initially explain all this about how it is different from multiband compression.
Awesome video as usual, thank you!
I LOVE the Kotelnikov compressor. I didn't even know it was doing side-chain compression! Your video probably explains why I love it so much. Great explanation on multi-band compressors too 👍
Thank you very much. This was increadibly helpful. I always found this to be an issue, but my "solution" was always just less compression.
Now I can have the best of both worlds.
Michael thanks again for be so clear and precise with your videos!!!
I use the Pro C2 alot. With the internal sidechain filter and being able to see and hear the compression is just awesome.
Great video. Perfect length for those of us trying to learn and get work done as fast as possible.
This is amazing! I wouldn't have understood that option without this video. Simple and effective. Thank you.
I'm happy to have helped!
Thanks for this! Shorter videos like this are good. Not always easy to fit a segment of 25 minutes into the day.
Great short and too the point, good explanation.
What a clear explanation! Makes sense now. Thank you.
lets goooo, some new good knowledge 🌊🙏
Very well explained. This helps a lot man! We all appreciate it!
I’m absolutely fascinated. A dear friend of mine, who is a music producer, sent me to your channel to better understand ‘the workings’ .. !! Wow ! So many details, beautifully presented. 👌🏼
Thanks a lot! I love this concise and to the point video. It’s very helpful!
What an excellent explanation. Clear and easy to understand. I greatly appreciate your teaching skills.
This video is simply awesome! Thank you so much!
Amazing ! Thankyou very much for these tips and educational videos.
amazing
loved the format and content
cheers
You have been doing a wonderful job bro. You are blessed
Absolutely brilliant explanation! I've used Fab C2 for a while now and never knew about this.
The short format is great for a quick lesson I can watch inbetween doing stuff.
I think it's important to point out that by doing this, you're allowing more of the bass energy level to come out of the compressor. Not only will the overall volume be higher (which makes A/B comparisons tricky), but you'll also have greater dynamic range remaining and higher peak levels. This could matter a lot depending on what happens next in your processing chain. For instance, if you're running into a saturator after this, you'll get a lot more peak saturation, which could make it harder to get that sound dialed in. Or, worst case, if this was at the end of your processing chain, you could introduce clipping in the mixdown.
In other words: Use this technique for coloring and gluing the mix without affecting the frequency distribution so much. But probably don't use this technique if you're using the compressor for actual dynamic range compression, to keep levels in check, or especially when limiting.
Sir I want my low end super load and punchy, but when I mastering whole mix bus and apply limiter just sake of loudness then my low is sacrifices, what I should do, please explain if you can ,
@@gurindersingh7933 I suggest you try decreasing your dynamic range before applying the compression, in your case that would mean decrease the volume or gain of your kick and bass. Also, try increasing the attack value. The punchiness will be less affected by the compressor
had the same thought
Excellent tips! Thanks for the video
Thanks Michael for the great video!
~relaxing and learning, you have a gift man
Loved this video! Thanks a bunch!
I love vids mate. They really are to the point and super helpful.
The thing with sidechain freq in compressors was exactly what I've been bugged with lately. Thank you!
IT was really something that i needed . thank you bro
Thanks for clearing this up. You explained it very well, it clicked instantly!
Great insights! Thanks for sharing.
Fantastic - Had proC a while but never understood this until now.
Many thanks
Very useful tip! Never thought about this. Thank you. This could work on my drum busses.
I really liked this one ! great utilization of a comp for drums.
Love it! Thank you!
Love these types of videos. Yes please!
Such an interesting trick!! can't wait to put it to use
