      I think you may be looking for the wrong details. If it was just the clarity, the C800G wouldn't be worth the price tag. What it does so well that no other mic can compete, not even the Sony C800 (same mic, minus the temp regulation) or even the C800G itself with an aftermarket tube, is its smoothness. I've never loved anything (other than my offspring) as much as I love my original Neumann U87. The reason I've always adored this warm mic is that it has a smoothness bright mics can never come close to. Bright mics (like C414XLii, for example) sound great but the brightness ensures you're gonna be dealing with nasty sibilance and harshness, when you get to post, everytime. The C800G is not just the clearest bright mic, its even less harsh and sibilant than my vintage original U87.
      That's why I ordered a C800G rather than a stereo pair of GAP's imitation.

    After listening to your audio files in my studio, the clear winner is the SONY. The GA doesn't quite have the same top end as the SONY, which is where the magic is. I also felt like the GA had a weird bump in the midrange that the SONY doesn't have, which I wasn't a fan of either.

    • @aperequest
      @aperequest 2 роки тому

      I totally agree. The midrange is more present in the Sony without having that same overpowering hump that the other one does. The Sony also has that beautiful rolled off top end that you get from M49 or U47’s and other mics at that level.

    • @andyanderson6455

      I kind of liked the mid bump in the GA actually, I used to own a SonyC800G and the top end being so aggressive made me want to inject some Mids..and the GA has it.

  • @TonsOfFun411

    Sony has a bit more depth, mostly sounding like a cleaner cut in the low mids, thus being a bit more balanced. The GA is great sounding though, just a bit more cloudy, something I bet would be easily fixable.

    I had the Sony C-880G but sold it, I could hardly use it without a de-esser. So much high end, more than any Mic I ever used that was of high quality. Very quiet. The GA-800 might be closer to what I would use. They both sounded great on the Shootout, but not really the same. I could hear the really high frequencies more with the Sony. But I had problems with sibilance and splatting.

    Sony C800G is suitable for later on processing in the box, No harsh mids or harsh top end yet still crisp. That's why top engineers use no more than 5 plugins on their vocal buss because they solve these problems from the start

    • @leviproducer1617
      @leviproducer1617 Рік тому +1

      The whole point for the Sony C800G is to give you less headache in post, for that to happen you need also a good Pre-amp(Neve 1073) and compressor(CL 1-B). Big artists wanna hear how the finished song is gonna sound as they are recording that's why big studios use expensive gear to get the desired sound as quick as possible. If you're on a budget start with a U87+ BAE 1073 + Retro Instruments Doublewide II+Urei LA-4 Compressor. You should get a really good sound with that chain for rap vocals

  • @officialkidbassmusic
    @officialkidbassmusic 3 роки тому +8

    My perspective... No two pieces of analog equipment sound exactly the same, even the same two mics would sound a little different... A C800G is around 10K-15K... The most noticeable difference on consumer speakers is the high end; the C800G to me sounds a touch more sibilant... there's more presence and tightness in the low mid on the C800G, you can hear on guitar and on some of the vocal performances, it makes it overall a tighter sounding mic... None of that really makes the C800G, 10 or 15K better, it's your job as an engineer/producer to get the best sound with what you've got, people are listening to the actual content of the music, not the recording.
    If I were in the market for a new mic especially as a young producer, the GA-8000 wins hands down, 5K-10K price difference! This shootout is way to close to be dropping that much more to get a couple percent better...
    It's just a mic at the end of the day; it won't make your music for you!

    • @Lapography
      @Lapography  3 роки тому

      Thanks for stopping by and subscribing. I agree with your comment. These are just tools to get the job done. I would like to add that the preamp choice also plays a big role in the sound. Each mic shines in different scenarios. What I noticed is that there are no perfect replicas to the C800. Sony has done their homework and built an outstanding mic, but there are some very close contenders.

    • @officialkidbassmusic
      @officialkidbassmusic 3 роки тому +3

      @@Lapography I don't see how what I said is far from the truth? We both agreed that mics are just tools to get the job done.
      And I also agree that there are qualities in the Sony mic that the GA-8000 does not replicate, infact no replica replicates. The differences tends to be due things like mechanical construction on the mounts, body, capsule etc. So even with replicated electronics a clone may not achieve the sound. This is also why one C800 will sound a little different from the other.
      Overall the C800G is still the better mic. But I've had the experience of working with vocalists prone to sibiliance where recording on a C800G through 1081 just caused more problems we switched over to a U67 with some placement tricks to diminish the problem, given the option I'd rather not have to fix it in post, and overall the mic suited him better. What's bright to some, comes across as more sibilant to others, and in the above case it was on the harsher side.
      I especially rate mixes based on how well they render on consumer playback systems. And on smaller speakers it's hard to hear a difference in the GA-8000 & C800 in anything but the top end. On pro monitoring systems you can hear the nicer mid and tightness of the C800. It definitely still has the upper hand.
      I will add also the amount of fandom I've seen for the C800G in studios is mind blowing, to a point people think that unless they drop 20-30K on a mic chain they won't make good music; If you make a trash record on the best equipment in the world it will still be trash. There are kids making hits with USB mics
      I still think no young producer/engineer should be dropping that much on a mic. That's something for people with stability in their life and career to do. It's a luxury not a necessity.
      Unless this is like your 8th mic and your budget is long the GA-8000 still wins to me it just has enough of the qualities you'd be looking for in a vocal mic, and while expensive will still leave you enough to pick up a good pre-amp, compressor etc.

      @Lapography  3 роки тому +1

      @@officialkidbassmusic i corrected the error in my previous comment. I meant to say I agree. I can honestly say that I like both mics and they both are capable of making hit records. What’s even more important is the mic preamp choice that is used with them.

    • @officialkidbassmusic
      @officialkidbassmusic 3 роки тому

      @@Lapography Ok haha 😂 well that changes things completely. But hopefully I've fleshed out where I was coming from a little better. 2 things I was trying to get at
      1. Engineers/Producers/Artists (managers especially) should rely on their ears rather than how much lighter a vocal chain made your wallet.
      2. One piece of equipment won't change your life. And it's not a good idea to put everything on a mic if your pre-amp suffers because of it. Just like it's not a good idea to drop your budget on PMC speakers if you're room is not up to scratch. So yeah totally agree with you on pre-amp choice being maybe even more vital.
      Anyway great video, your passion really comes through. You did a spectacular job putting this all together! 👊🏾

    I copied this from a Blog: I keep repeating myself, but as a C800G owner, I'd choose a Manley Ref C or U87AI and here's why.
    Room noise. You'll get more room noise with the C800G, and in 85% of cases, you wont want that. I think it's easier to get a consistent vocal take in a home studio with a Manley or U87AI over the C800G. If you have an amazing, dry sounding room, by all means use a C800G. The amount of treatment I need to soak up the excess room reverb with the C800G is more than I'd use with a manley ref or U87AI.
    I can use the Ref C on a stand, looking at my computer screen and it'll sound good in a treated room. I need my primacoustic vocal panels with the C800G, I can't put it on a stand, look at my computer screen and sing. the reverb bugs me, then next thing you know, you need some DeVerb plugins to get a good sound with it.
    If you already have a Ref C, use that, get a career going, then maybe switch after that, but you already have the right tools to make great music.
    To clarify, I can put my U87AI on a stand and sing, looking at my screen, and it'll sound good.
    I need to add the halo filter, sing into the primacoustic vocal booth (it's 2 fiberglass panels put in a wooden enclosure) to get the right sound with the C800G.
    Does the C800G sound better in that case? it depends, I find the mids are more consistent in the Manley Ref C and U87AI. if you sing a little hard, theres a noticeable mid spike that pops up on a C800G, and it may or may not be what you want.

    In my opinion there was only a subtle difference between both mics, and it was really only apparent with the female vocals. In all honesty nothing a little EQ couldn't fix, and definitely something that wouldn't be noticeable if you didn't have the side-by-side demos. There's a lot more than the mic going on when recording, such as placement, preamps, EQ, etc. and I don't think the Sony warrants the price tag outside of the bragging rights you might get by owning one.

Acapella shoot outs aren't the greatest when the point is to hear the mic(s) in what would be a real world practical usage scenario. The contrast of other instruments tells a lot about how a mic captures and represents sound. Would be super tight if you did a shoot out with the capsules a little closer together. I use the Sony almost daily and I’m in love (although it’s the most temperamental and least broadly applicable mic I’ve ever used-but when it’s right for a certain voice it’s magic) - I find the Sony to really have a sweet spot w the capsule - if the vocalist is an inch or two off the capsule, the tone is shot, here the Sony seems to be blowing the GA out of the water, but the thin sounding vocal tone I’m hearing in the GA kinda sounds like the Sony when the artist is looking at their phone reading lyrics not directly on the capsule - are these examples On the GA on consistent with when you have artists right on the capsule? Great video thanks for the content

    • @Lapography
      @Lapography  3 роки тому +2

      I appreciate your comment and attention to detail. You are correct. There is no general purpose mic that works on everyone except a select few like the Neumann U67 or U87 in my experience. I assure you both capsules from the shootout were as close as possible and the singer was directly on axis. What you are hearing is exactly what both microphones sound like. The camera angle can play tricks on the eyes but in reality the mics were as close as they can get to each other without getting in a fight :) I pull out the ruler and microscope on all the shootouts that are conducted on the channel. Thanks for stopping by and please subscribe for more content coming soon. Cheers!

    With the Sony c800g, the only thing I feel like I hear is this extra body maybe. There is just some extra something. But, honestly, they sound identical. They both seem amazing for vocals or anything really. I wouldn't knock anyone for owning the replica or recreation. They both are so amazing. I don't believe there would be any sound difference especially after mixing. But, you could compare an at2020 and the c800g and after mixing I feel like you could get a very similar result but, obviously, the c800g has a different construction and there would be a body difference, and they both process frequencies in their own ways.

    Thx for the video bro... I’m trying to figure out what mic to get. 10k for c800 is probably not possible. Also I can’t buy it in the EU. Can’t wait for the C-100 video... I also really liked your singer/rapper selection... doing mostly rap recordings. We did a mic test from a selection in the price range 200 - 5000 EUR and the 220 EUR Aston Origin won the Battle, beating all sorts of Neumanns and lots of classic/known mics at rap vocals. The Origin is perfect for aggressive parts that our German rappers often have. But Sony mics are really rare here - the c100 is available though. Also the GA800...

    Микрофон от сони прекрасно красит!
    На рэпе как ни старался услышать разницу, но ее просто нет из-за общего быстрого потока слов. Рэп читка зависит только от уникальной интонации исполнителя , а не от микрофона известного бренда.

    So I have very sensitive hearing on the high end and I listened to this on 2 sets of monitors in different rooms. As much as I want the clone to be the same I can clearly hear how the C-800G is way smoother and more open sounding (with less high frequency) and so would easily take to EQ, Comp etc better. I have a Manley Ref C, U87ai and just got a Studio Projects C1 (V2) and tend to choose Avalon 737 over my Neve SPX 1073 every time as it's more detailed. I paid £100 for my Studio Projects C1 and it's beating my £2000 mics in Pop / Hip-hop music from tests i've done over the last week. However I've heard so many clips of the C800G and it's just so smooth compared to every other mic in the upper mids and top end, it's like £8k more than a top end mic for a microphone that is 20% smoother. If you want the best then price is not so much a factor. Think i'm saving up for the real deal so I can stop looking at microphones!

      I just checked out your page....you already have some great sounding material, radio ready. I honestly don't think you'd notice much of a difference, well at least not enough to justify the cost of a C800g. I guess it depends on how much time you currently spend processing your vocals with your existing setup. You may find that you need a little less eq with a Sony, but man unless you just absolutely have to have the Sony and you have money that's burning a hole in your pocket, I'd say keep the money, or try some different flavored preamps/compressors.
