- RARE OLDIES SOUNDIES WITH MR NAT KING COLE & MISS IDA JAMES ! Nathaniel Adams Coles (March 17, 1919 February 15, 1965), known professionally as Nat King Cole, was an American musician who first came to prominence as a leading jazz pianist. Although an accomplished pianist, he owes most of his popular musical fame to his soft baritone voice, which he used to perform in big band and jazz genres. He was the first black American to host a television variety show and has maintained worldwide popularity over 40 years past his death; he is widely considered one of the most important musical personalities in United States history.
You can watch all my rare oldies soundies on :www.msplinks.com/MDFodHRwOi8vb... or www.myspace.com/swingcocktail ! Many thanks , NICKY .
I realize Tom sings this song in one episode.
I meet this song before with glenn miller but i see t&j when i was a child and today i realize is the same song i loved that episode haha
chris. s the version is by glenn miller is in Spotify
@@chris.s7147 try searching for Ira "Buck" Woods. Literally every classic singer covered the song.
I find myself playing his trio recordings much more than the later ones, which often were too heavily orchestrated for my liking. He was,I think ,the finest accompanist to the voice of all time.simply a genius on the piano.
Yeah, but the ORIGINAL was sung Ira "Buck" Woods. 💯

I'm so glad for the invention of UA-cam that we can access these treasures.
Absolutely, we are blessed with having the technology that gives us the opportunity to see the efforts of these master artists of the past despite the fact that they are long since dead. Just think, until the advent of film and recording past artists were just legends who over time melted into the memory of the population eventually to be forgotten. Now we also have UA-cam to bring the past artists to life again.
I imagine that at least a few times, a piece of media must have been forgotten by all that viewed it, and later uploaded here.
Nat was known worldwide for his smooth vocals but such a damn fine underrated pianist.
Yes, that piano break kicked it and I was wowed.
The late Oscar Peterson said the same thing about NKC. And Oscar was no joke.
dagoelius He was also an amazing trumpet player
@@camerond47 RAMONE he say LADIES AND GENTLEMEN WELCOME TO THE RADTIOR SPRINGS TALENT SHOW TONIGHT🌃 THE JUDGES ARE CEILA MAE AND MIKE AND SULLEY CARRIE WILLIAMS THEY WILL CHOOSE LITTLE BLUE OF ENDLESS ALPHABET HE AND VAMPIRNA THEY PLAY THE CELLO AND PIANO FOR THE SONG
When Nat moved into an all-white area of LA, his racist neighbors said they didn't want any "undesirables" moving in. Nat said something to the effect of, "Well if I see any, I'll let you know". Great comeback.
Yep.. this is exactly what he said.. I soooo love Nat.. if there were one person I could meet, it would be Nat.., such a gentleman, such a talent.. the greatest voice of our time..
@@shaise Stop my friend.., it's not white people, it's ignorance that drives racism.., God Bless..
ironic since those "undesirables" were already in front of Nat's face lol
@@jasm760 sad isn't it..
That’s crazy, cuz I’m watching love craft country and them colored folk jus moved to a white neighborhood and they throw a party and jam to this, and u see lawns of white folk That have the undesirables not welcome yard sign
Tom & Jerry brought me here!
Likewise me
me too.
I'm here because TCM almost reduced my TV to ashes with this red-hot video. Nat King Cole & Ida James are great singing together.
just found out Ms. Ida James is my great Aunt ! I've be researching my grandfather Roland James of Son and Sonny & stumbled upon this gem
Woah! What are the chances?
Seeing Ms. James for the first time, she was a beauty.
She was very pretty!
Smoking hot
A young Lark Vorhees (sp?) favors her.
Tom Killed It.
I love this song ever since I saw Tom and Jerry. The beat is so groovy in the Tom and Jerry version it’s more upbeat but other than that a beautiful classic.
This indeed is Nat's voice at the age of 18. Part of it is his youth, part of it the microphone used for recording the pre-recordings for this film, which brought out the higher tones in vocals.
He was 24 here.
The guitarist is Oscar Moore, he was in the trio from 1937-1947. A very talented guitarist and the star, IMO.
I like the tom& Jerry version cause it swings
Everybody likes the Tom and Jerry version. First time I heard it was watching the cartoon short. I liked it immediately, so I was elated as an adult to find that Nat covered this classic with the trio!
Sorry sweetie! The guitarist was a very handsome and young undiscovered George Benson!
johnzaq1
Me too it’s more upbeat
Yeah they should make a swing cover
Was there a cooler man than Nat King Cole? Nat had a voice like satin, and had a ton of class to boot. Ida James is a total babe as well!
Wow, what an unusual voice Ida James had! Don't think they make voices like that these days :-)
Actually… Fantasia sounds a bit like her! Great voice!💖
@@tishholley-howse9662 good parallel! they do sound similar to me as well!
Michel'le
She kinda looks like Lisa turtle lol
I realise I'm late to this but she sounds a tiny bit like Minnie ripperton.
She is absolutely breathtaking 😍😘
Facts!!!
Nat Cole is as usual playing his effortless smooth jazz piano the whole time he sings, looks at the camera and looks at her. He is the epitome of cool.
Nat King Cole ... the best friend a song ever had (Jack Benny)
Ida James can melt the whole room..🥰❤
When ever I hear anybody say these words, Tom comes to mind. I cant escape it, ha ha ha.....! me and my 5 year old always have a good time watching that episode.
tom and jerry great yeeaaaa
Tom & Jerry was influenced by this beautiful piece of talent .
WOW, that was very, very good. Go
Ida James.
This is such an incredible video. The sweet voice of Ida James coupled with the smooth and mello voice of Nat King Cole, make this a video treasure. Sadly there are only two Cole/James videos that I know of, even though I believe the trio backed up other Ida James recordings.
This is so beautiful I’m glad black folks had this experience back then because these are the moments I want to share with my kids one day ❤ thank you so much for the black community of the past ❤❤❤
Damn she pretty
Shadow Games That lady probably dead or old as fuck

Imagine if they just knew that their music was being played worldwide on the internet still a century later
This is so incredibly entertaining. I wish there were more than just two videos by Ms James and Nat! I have watched them many times and love them more each time I view.
So lovely, simply one of the best.
Nat King Cole is awesome & Ida James was so beautiful. I love this short!
Beautiful
My favorite Tom and Jerry episode ❤️! I can be angry at the world, and all I have to do is see Tom sing that tune, and all is good 👍 😂!
I just got all my grandfather 16mm films, and this one of many musicals, that i have.
Nice own a copy.
Greg Parsons wassup Hun, what's the name of the musical ?
Tom wow..... Am able to see this song
Nat King Cole and Ira James are Fantastic.
Magnificent. good post.
She's stunning 😌😍
This is the best version!!
She was an angel! - Miss Ida James!
And young Nat King Cole - he was the greatest!
Can't say i much like this rendering.
Thank you Tom and Gerry
Close your eyes, and she sounds like Eartha Kitt.
Changing her name to Ida James, she was a singer, actress, and bartender at Harlem’s Sugar Hill Cafe. Her sugary sweet voice was a great contrast when singing with Nat King Cole and his band.
In addition to a smooth vocalist Nat was a supreme pianist.
My father had this beautiful film in 16 mm. Thanks for the memories!
Wow, what a beautiful voice. I wonder shy haven't I heard of her.
I have this on 16mm film, nice condition too. Gives me heart palpitations every time I watch it. I was wondering who this lovely lady was as Ive never heard this version anywhere else. Thank-you so much for posting it!!
Nice
Such class and elegance ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I love this song!
Best version. ❤
Super nice. Great singers.
Her voice is so cute
@GogolBordelloLover
It said that this was in 1948, so Nat King Cole was 29. But to me he always looked older than he was. All through his life people thought he was older than he was. Not only just because he looked older, but also the way he carried himself. He was an old soul in a young body.
She beautiful asf
j'adore !!!
Greatest covers of all time:
Whitney Houston: I will always love you
Johnny Cash: Hurt
Tom Cat: Is you is or is you ain't my baby
Love, Nat King Cole.
BTW I really really like this song
Everytime I see this clip of the beautiful Ida I can't help but think that Nina Ricci has a similar face and eyes - both gorgeous ladies.
Smh…. This makes me want to cry😢
Wow that lady is angelic
thanks for upload, respect! 8-)

I was so surprised when I heard her voice :O amazing !!
Classic!
I'm here because TOM💖
I miss you Grandma. : )
Wow Ida James was a looker😍😍😍😍😍
*Tom still sings it the best*
Ohh tommy 😢
I must sample that voice. Hers!
Is my music favority and 1944 1937
This is the way this song is supposed to be sung!
What talent back then. Seems to be totally lost now. Today they need technology to perform "live " .
Tom and Jerry RULZ! 😍😍😍
here are the lyrics
I got a gal who's always late
Any time we have a date
But I love her
Yes I love her
I'm gonna walk right up to her gate
And see if I can get it straight
'Cause I want her
I'm gonna ask her
Is you is or is you ain't my baby?
The way you're actin' lately makes me doubt
Yous is still my baby-baby
Seems my flame in your heart's done gone out
A woman is a creature that has always been strange
Just when you're sure of one
You find she's gone and made a change
Is you is or is you ain't my baby
Maybe baby's found somebody new
Or is my baby still my baby true?
Is you is or is you ain't my baby
Maybe baby's found somebody new
Or is my baby still my baby true?

Who's here after Tom sings this in Tom And Jerry?
Just to add that Nat's voice during the Trio years is not very much like his later sound, such as the mid-late 50s. Some say it was his smoking habit that effected the change, but I disagree. Nat's voice simply matured, but his vocal style evolved more than his voice changed. I know lots of serious jazz fans lament that fact that Nat was such a good singer, because it took him away from his Jazz roots and his fabulous piano playing. But while I have many Trio recordings, I much prefer the later 50s Nat. In any case, just a stupendous talent that only appears when the stars align juuuuuuuuuuust right..
Absolutely agree! Nat's style evolved as more of a ballad singer, and stand up at the mike performer. Starting around the time of Nature Boy. His wife was very influential in that transition. Check out his biography Nat King Cole by author Epstein. Incidentally, if you listen to Nat's original recordings of his songs, his voice still had the lighter quality of his early trio recordings. Compare his three versions of The Christmas Song. His most popular being the 1961 version we all know. That was also the year Nat Re-recorded all his great hits in stereo, versions we are most familiar with.
So, yes! By 1960 Nat's voice had reached seasoned maturity naturally. However, that was evident by the late 1950s. As far as cigarettes, Nat felt as if smoking helped him reach his lower notes later in his career. However, he still wanted to kick the habit. Ciao

Read that biography a few years ago. Great read, very in depth.

I know that Nat thought the ciggies helped his lower register (and that he would smoke several in a row before recording), but given that it took his life in his early 40s, I weep to wonder what more he could have done if not for those insidious bullets.. His voice was such that he could have sang for many more years. Sad and tragic.
Ida James resembles Sanaa Lathan from Nappily Ever After
Ty uncle Snoop 😏
MANN 😃Wow
this song was used in tom and jerry scene bfr
2018 Anyone ?
Brother proposed with this song
I can't imagine if that man sing like Tom.
Tom & Jerry. Lol
Yous!
@MrJulesNapier
I don't think that it was the makeup that made him look older in films because in the book that I read about him, he was always told as a young teenager that he looked older than he was. And that was before he became famous.
