Tom and Jerry Cat Concerto - Arranged version of Hungarian Rhapsody No.2 by Franz Liszt
Can we take a moment to appreciate how Tom played this difficult piece by using just 4 fingers in each paws.

The fact that she’s able to synchronise the video and the piece simply amazes me! Absolutely fantastic job here!
😂😂😂😂😂
I am pretty sure she improvised. She was looking at the monitor so often
For musician of her caliber, that’s child’s play actually. It’s amazing that cartoon video is synchronised with the audio. That’s very hard infact.
Also a difficult piece

Sometimes I feel that we don't appreciate these masterpieces much. In my childhood, I was just laughing all along, never realised how difficult was this to play for the person who played this.
the animation was golden
And the animators of course. All they had was pieces of paper, transparency’s, and an overhead camera. Then knowing 24 frames per second, they had to draw this and snap photos in perfect sync with a piece of music that isn’t remotely consistent in tempo.
This must have been a massive technical achievement and no wonder it won an Oscar.
@@ryanpwm and Tom's fingers move so fast and accurate to the song while his body is all moving and everything is so smooth and expressive. It's a masterpiece!
Great music with great animation went fast to our hearts our brain did not felt it

Sometimes, we just don’t know what can influence someone’s life
From being a kid to now turning 21, Tom avoiding the scissors and stretching his pinky across the piano has me crying to this day😂
Can we just take a minute to appreciate the fact that Tom was a cat that was once homeless but progressed to the level of a concert level pianist, who played on stage in front of crowds. But all he is remembered for is a bunch of cartoons?

@Violinistories ofc not completely, it would be boring to watch if it's completely accurate, i think what Defy's talking about is how great the timing is.
The academy did. This won the Oscar for best short film (animated) in 1947.

@@daleluna8439 i agree

She is not just playing the piece, she is matching to the video frame exactly when Tom is playing the animated piano. superb control and timing !
Vamps my dood
Indeed, although to make things easier, the episode itself follows the same piece, so in a sense she doesnt have to rely too much on the visuals.
@@Jake_Garcia yes but the beat is going faster and slower during the song and she has no metronome reference so the video sync is important
Bruh if the sound matches, shouldn’t the fingers MAKING those sounds match too?
It helps that the animators did such an accurate job as far actually matching Tom’s movements to what was actually being played. Pretty rare to see, even nowadays
(Obviously the hammer movements are pretty exaggerated in many scenes, but the key work is almost spot on)
Yannie thank uou so much for such a beautiful performance to a wonderful childhood memory.
This is why I love classical music and jazz literally from Tom and Jerry and amazing musicians!!!

@@gabrielesteves7498 If I had to guess, does impromtu mean when a pianist has to improvise a part that they kinda/almost messed up?
It amazes me this was animated in the Late 40's-50's. Modern cartoons nowadays don't even make their Drums accurate but this just sent dedication to a whole another level.
I just came here from a video of a scene in the musical animated film Sing which completely destroyed the piano scene. The funniest part is it's a musical movie so they should be getting it right.
Cartoons back then is more than just for children's enjoyment, they are our time's cgi thus creators can do whatever they want and their audience ranges from Youngs to adult.
Because back then cartoons weren't just for children but nowadays because it's made for children children don't care about the accuracy they just want to watch it so animators think they can get away with animating it wrong i might be wrong
What is this?
You know that Tom and Jerry was an Outlier right?
Most Kids animations back then didn't get the notes right either.
One year per episode of ten minutes
I love how during the piece, The Entertainer by Scott Joplin was subtly thrown in. 👍 love the performance as well, it motivates me to practise lol

@@parkuuu You said it. As an animator myself, I understand why they had to go with cg, its faster than hand drawn animation and less tiring too. But yeah, hand drawn animation is just built different.
@@Kopie0830 forgive my ignorance, but would it still be possible for the current technology to imitate the old hand-drawn feel? I mean it would make sense to draw keyframes quicker with the current tools, I think but I might be wrong.
Just like the cuphead game, if you are familiar with that.. they used rubber hose animation style and it is damn beautiful.
@@parkuuu It is possible as drawing and animation apps can simulate the feel and quality to hand drawn level. So you are right, they can animate to 90's style of drawing but 2d animation styles are getting rarer and rarer and most are switching to full 3d.

Yeah!! Couldn't agree more with you. I am still looking for all of the classical songs that were used in different episodes.
And all done by hand, no computers. Each cel was drawn individually with none of the technology that are available today.
The thing I loved most about that show is they never spoke, everything was done through expression and it still was funny, this was such a beautiful animation I’m glad it’s still getting it’s recognition all these years later.
That's not entirely true. Tom does talk in a few episodes. One that comes to mind is the two episodes he falls in love with a female white cat and is competing with an alley cat for her. Once at the beach and the other in his neighborhood. There are others though I'm sure. There are also many episodes where Tom sings as well. Most famous is when Tom does opera and sings Figaro. At the end Jerry finishes singing the song. Only episode that I can remember where Jerry actually speaks/sings.

In that episode of Tom and Jerry when Jerry goes to interrupt/harm Tom it causes him to fumble sometimes making him hit incorrect notes but still staying on key , she was hitting those correctly even tho it didn't sound right at all.

Imho having listened to other recordings of this piece it really isnt that good. I mean from a classical music perspective, this recording is a trainwreck.
@Adel Eng Sheng Jun Student And most all piano recordings are also played on a stage aswell, so my point still stands. And as far as playing the piece well is concerned, clarity plays a role. If she cannot do that, then even the talent argument falls off

@@carbon4183 Yes it's a bad recording, but it's not her fault. The mic is shitty, it's pretty obvious...
@@reveirg9 Is it? Well I'll tell you what I found at least in the opening section of the Friska (3:30 to 4:30)
a) The opening section of the Friska (3:30) is waaaay faster than normal (and louder too) and doesn't have the notes played again after the arpeggiated chord (idk its hard to explain);
b) When the Friska transitions into the bit with the repeated C# note (3:39) - it really is uneven and the whole thing is played so loud it is very hard to discern the left hand chords and the "pulse" of this section
c) When this section begins to involve octave jumps (3:44 onwards) the whole thing devolves into a mess - tempo is off; dynamics are uneven; the balance shifts making the left hand waaay more inaudible;
d) Skip a bit ahead to around 4:02 and you'll hear the lower note accented waaay more than it should be;
e) At 4:12 the dissonant notes are played as if theyre chords even though theyre meant to be arpeggiated/crushed (whatever you call grace notes)
and f) At 4:18 the lower notes are again, extremely loud and it overpowers the higher notes - as opposed to a more even balance
All of this might sound like innocent mistakes that I'm picking at, but the general point I'm trying to make is that the pianist does not appear to have good control over said piece
I’m still listening to this great pianist I love her
This filled my heart with nostalgic joy ❤
