I hope you enjoyed my previous video with the chirping cricket ( • Field Cricket Chirping... ). Today we're going to add a little bonus.
During the filming we became friends with the cricket so much that he ended up helping me film other invertebrates. He expertly attracted bugs from the surrounding area to his burrow, because he knew exactly what they would fall for - his own droppings! I gave him a nickel for every poop he squeezed out, and we established a mutually beneficial business.
Okay, now let's get a bit serious. I was filming a close-up of the cricket chirping, concentrating on composition and getting the focus right, when suddenly something big ran into the picture and almost startled me. At first I wanted to hiss at the creature, "Hey, I'm filming here! Stay out of my shot and keep moving!" But then I noticed that the bug wasn't going any further. It was a carrion beetle, and it had come to enjoy the cricket's delicious poop.
Carrion beetles eat almost anything that's a bit disgusting - apart from hunting live invertebrates, they also devote themselves to nibbling on corpses, poop and other decaying remains. Cricket poop was obviously an irresistible delicacy and I caught the carrion beetle red handed on several occasions. The stridulating cricket didn't look the most enthusiastic, but in the end he seemed to have calculated that such a free cleaning service is actually not completely useless.
As I watched the carrion beetle munching away, after a while I began to find his actions quite inspiring. Fortunately, I had my empty lunch box with me. So if you feel like it, come by - I still have a few cricket droppings left in my fridge. I recommend them as a crumble topping for pies or as a Christmas candy garnish. And if you believe it, I might have a few water fountain watches in the drawer for you as well.

Nice 👍👍🙏
🧡
😁
