Hands of Uthalgethdaz could be the creation on a Necromancer, they sometimes build odd creatures so good Luck
You'll find out next episode. :)
A more economical way to deal with light aquifers is to smooth the walls. Smooth walls do not leak and once you get a stone carver trained, they are really fast.
The smooth-walls-stops-aquifer bug was fixed long before steam edition. The only way now is to build it in with walls.
@@peternomeliea2791 I just did it in the Steam version, so you might want to check your information.
And do not confuse light aquifers with stronger ones. The latter cannot be contained by smoothing.
@@peternomeliea2791 A bit of an open mouth insert foot situation here 😂😂😂
The stairs tip OMG! my dwarfs were literally being haunted by 5+ dwarfs because i fucked up the staircase like you showed and they just couldnt get to the tombs so the bodies were just rotting inside the fortress. Hopefully i can try to make things right by the dead now
I started in a swamp, 10 layers of aquifer, then after 4 layers of dry stone 3 more layers. Steam release might have extra thick aquifers for some reason.
Maybe! I've also come across multiple levels as well in some starts. Ten layers is massive!
That happens on vanilla pre steam too matey
you may have stumbled on a particularly super low drainage region. At least I've always assumed and got the idea that drainage is related to swamp formation and aquifer presence
@@Maravone It's as good a theory as any for DF.
I thought someone said polishing walls would also prevent leakage?
Thanks! I'm not so scared to start somewhere with a light aquifer after watching this :)
If you don't start with wood you can just smooth the walls. I'll be doing this in a later episode to show the process. In a nut-shell you should have some dedicated engravers to do the smoothing.
Thanks for making this series! I haven't played DF in years, and this helps me get back into it! I also really enjoy that your general Let'sPlay style is basically an in-depth tutorial in that you explain what you are doing and why! That is so valuable, and I wish more content creators did that.
Glad you enjoy it!
Most detailed DF tutorial I've found so far. Thank you, thank you! 👍
This dude is straight up the most underrated tutorial guy on UA-cam for so many advanced strategy games. Plus he’s a bomb ass dude
You're very welcome!
I don't know why but I've always thought aquifers were like actual pits of under ground water. this makes light aquifers so easy to deal with. Thanks!
"Pits of underground water" describes heavy aquifers pretty well. They used to be the only type of aquifer at one point, which is probably the cause of confusion there.
Amazing new series!!! Really hope you upload another one today :D HYPE
They will be one per day because I need to illustrate the thumbnails.
@@DasTactic one per day is great! I'll here again tomorrow for the next one haha
Oh man. Your original series has been helping me through my own Let's Play! I'm so glad you posted this.
Glad I could help!
I've watched quite a few different tutorials starting from the beginning before I found yours. I really didn't want to watch another but I could tell from the way you spoke you would cover more details on things. And you did not disappoint. I'm only about 12 minutes into this episode...your 1st of the series and it's worth it alone for you explaining the stairs issue. I've been dealing with that constantly and couldn't figure out a fix. I either end up building a separate stair case or I have my miners build stairs down to like level 0 from day 1 lol. Thank you for explaining how to fix my freaking stairs!!
It's so awesome to have you to instruct us in the ways of Dwarf Fortress all through the years. It's certainly an exciting era for the game! I really hope it gets more publicity with the Steam release.
I absolutely love your original series, the tile-set you used was perfect balance: Not ascii and too raw and not graphical and defining too much ! The tileset had the simulation but allowed your imagination to feel in the rest. And of course your dulcet tones covered the rest !! Thank you very much.
Thanks for that. :)
Ahh, back to DwarfFortress
when i think of Dastactics channel, three things come to mind - tutorials, Shadow Empire, and that one DF video visually explaining how ladders (and space tiles) work in this game xD
Just discovered your channel. Really enjoying it, looking forward to more.
Welcome aboard!
I enjoy your videos pretty much. Reminds me a little bit when I was a child and watched Löwenzahn with Peter Lustig (German Kid Television Star in the 80´s) 😉. Strike the Earth ⛏.
Thank you for demystifying aquafors. Can't wait for the next episode!
I'm a new Patreon! excited, ty for all your vids man, really enjoy them and have learned alot on many games. I really appreciate your time and efforts in making these.
Enjoying watching, and learning for my own play through. The dog/moose art is fantastic.
Thanks for that. I experimented with a style I can do fairly quickly. :)
I swear once I finish this damn PhD I start playing these time-eating monsters
Seeing this huge aquifer made me feel better. I saw another youtuber do a tutorial in getting through them, but he only dealt with one layer, all the aquifers I've seen have been pretty deep.
Three thumbs up! Great video. Thanks!
Ah, good to see Das back in the aquifers! Think one of the first videos I watched it his was the how to go through an aquifer about 7 or 8 years ago when I first Struck the Earth!
What did he say?? 30:05
Jokes aside I'm really looking forward to your playthrough, you strike an amazing balance of being entertaining, informative, and passionate and have as a creator for many years. Hope it continues for many more!
Lol. I had to look at it six time to work out what I was saying. :) Something about a stray guineacock growing up. :)
I'm playing my first ever game and thought an aquifer must be a dead end to move around. Thank you so much for showing me how to deal with it.
My honest guess is that the named character f rom the start message is either the Goblin leader, or a necromancer- and the hands are his minions. That, or a particular character's hands that have been raised as undead.
Great guess. :)
Hey I originally learned to play df from your old videos! I love the steam version but I swear stairs are even more confusing now then before.
I have never had it that deep before! "That's what she said" ^^
Loving it! I actually would never have had an interest in this game if you hadn't started this series. :) Thanks, and I like the idea of keeping some suspense on whatever the looming future holds! :)
Glad you enjoy it!
Ooh, boy. We're going to be seeing some Experiments (a necromancer creation)!
Great Addition to my exhausting monday. thx
Fortress name: The Furs of Moosebane
Lol. :)
I'm loving these videos! Thank you for making them:D
How many levels of light aquifer makes a heavy one?
Dwarven humour
Lol! :)
Back when there was only one kind of aquifer, I embarked next to a major river. I had to pump out 12 levels of ugly without the use of stone =)
Never seen such a deep aquifer, might be something about the world gen or the 1.0 version. =)
Ouch! That would be nasty.
1.0? Lol, maybe in 20 years! The premium version is at version 0.50 (technically it is 0.50.03 as there have been a couple hot fixes), so DF is about 1/2 done.
did you know smoothing the stone will block the aquifer?
Nice tip!
Yes, but that is slow. Good if you don't have wood or if you have pumps to keep the area dry. :)
Note: You can also smooth stone to stop an aquifer. Aquifers don't leech through smooth stone. Of course, this doesn't work with sand, loam, slay, silt, etc., so those will still need a wall as shown in the video.
you also can smooth stone to block the water if you didn't know :)
I wish i would have started with 5 in swimming on all the dwarves this run. Real nice map with multiple river branches and water falls. No matter how much I forbid the areas they run over there and suicide constantly. Once swimming is trained they just stand there all day.
Amazing thumbnails!
I love your tutorials and your voice/personality
Thanks. I really enjoy making these. :)
I'm glad I saw this today. I picked up the steam version and wasn't sure what to do with aquifers at all. I have a fortress built just around one and it looked quite silly
The Heavy aquifers are a real problem. I think I'll make a video showing how they work as well. They need to be tackled very differently.
very helpful video, thanks. Why use logs instead of the right-there conglemerate, mudstone, etc. to wall off the stairway? Would that rock not hold the water out or something?
Mainly aesthetics so I can just use all of one material on the layer. I can indeed mix and match the various closest materials. Also dwarves can walk much faster carrying logs than boulders so if I'm unsure I will tend to use logs or blocks before boulders for aquifers.
First of I wanted to thank you for your tutorials. Be they Distant Worlds 2 or Dwarf Fortress. I ventured into that on watching some of your videos. Thank you for that. It is a great game. There is one thing that perplexes me a bit, I played my first non-tutorial game along side yours and noticed that your time is passing more slowly than mine. Finished the aquifer (episode 5). Your date says mid summer and I am a t late fall. So I did a second start. Did everything like you, started the game and dug my first 10 floors of stair to find the aquifer. You got it accomplished in one day (16th of Granite) and I am already on the 17th. Is there a setting I am missing. At this pace it is quiet a feat to get ready for winter. Is there a way to make the days last longer? not understanding the difference.
i had 2 games in a row with 10+ deep aquifiers and i thought it was the reason why people didn't like them XD
Is there any disadvantage to converting all your dogs into war dogs as soon as you embark?
11:14 It seems in steam version it is changed - if you dig down-stair on already existed up-stair, it will be transformed into up-down-stair automatically
My rule of thumb is to move to the next up-down stair or designation.
This game reminds me of Avadon.
So is there an equivalent for Dwarf Therapist to sort or distinguish the skills of our dorfs for militaristic tasks in the fortress?
no. at least for now
@@Maravone What? There's a Labors section, though trimmed, serves the same function.
When you're adding dwarves to a squad, it will note any dwarves with relevant weapons skills - but only depending on the uniform selected.
I'm looking forward learning from your fort.
I hope it helps. :)
I had a 14 layer aquifier today... first one ive had to deal with too... I managed to get through it but oh my god did it take a while.
That's wild.
I can’t get my dwarves to go down and work on building a wall before the stairs flood, I have the order up to demolish the stone and they just won’t go
Are you sure it is a light aquifer? It sounds like a heavy one. (it is possible that in different areas of your map there will be different styles of aquifers.)
34:29 Michael Scott is rolling in his grave
thank you for this
No problem 😊
hm.. what sorts of mischief could be done with such a deep aquifer?
The same sorts of mischief one can always do with an infinite source of water, I suspect.
Let's goooo new video
Now how to use that aquifer to make a waterfall ... as my river waterfall keeps flooding my dining room every winter.
I've got that in the back of my head but I think I need to find a way of draining it off the map so it doesn't slow down my frame-rate too much.
i thought smoothing aquifer walls stopped them from being leaky?
Yes. I tend to not do that but will show it in a future episode.
So excited!!!!
Also, construction suspended due to something blocking site usually means that there was a stone, rock, another dorf, a cat, etc. on the build site, and the build site must be clear for a dorf to build there. Usually the dorf doing construction will move items themselves, but I've found that sometimes they are unable to (maybe it was designated for another task, or there are no nearby blank areas to put it, I dunno), and that (or a stray animal/dorf) leads to construction suspension. As DAS showed, just unsuspend and it usually works.
I’ve mined down in concert with Das, but instead of finding an aquifer I found a cavern. Is this a good thing!? Time will tell?
Good luck my friend
I wall them off as quick as I can so that trolls etc can't break in. Then later I try to find a safe way outside.
Love it
Sweet!
Rock and stone boys 😊
Can we get a new MoM video up, please? I've been checking back every hour since getting up this morning... ;(
That series is done now. I'll be recording a new series after the game is launched. :) Love that game.
@@DasTactic Ah, okay; thanks for the clarification!
@@DasTactic By the way, how would you compare AoW 3 and MoM? I recall religiously watching your AoW 3 preview videos, too ;)
