My best friend is a intp, and almost nobody, even mutual friends can tell our personality types apart and it is because they are very similar in many ways. The main difference is the order of the cognitive thought process. One example I could make that will possibly be helpful for you to determine if your friend is a intj or intp would be to say something that is obviously contrary to known physics, or scientific facts in a mildly subtle way. You'll have to do it in such a manner that they think you are serious. An intp Will have an emotional response of being irritated or offended often they will tell you that it is a lie, it's false, BS! Etc... but you will almost certainly see that it caused an emotional outburst. An INTJ on the other hand is more likely to very matter of factly tell you "no its not" and then matter of factly tell you how it's wrong while not getting their emotions ruffled with a possible exception if you try to argue the point.
