  • Fish lies, fish lore, urban legends. A lot of good advice floats around on the web. Unfortunately so does a lot of MIS-informaton that if followed could lead to disaster. Here are a few I've come across.
    What have you seen floating around out there that you knew was just not right? Post it below and share your thoughts. What "Fish Lies" have you heard?
    Then, after commenting, please share this video, rate it and sub (if you haven't already)!

    ** FULL TANK BREAKDOWNS (subject to change) **
    60 Gal Tank Details:
    Filtration: 2 SunSun 302s stuffed with sponges, Biohome Ultimate and MarinePure Cermedia and Seachem Purigen + one sponge Pre-filter attached to the inputs. Also, I just added a Marineland Emperor 400 Biowheel to the 60 gal. to help with water movement and oxygen. It's stuffed with Pinky floss, sponge filled bio-balls and the Emperor sponge/carbon inserts.
    Plants: LIVE Anubias and Java Ferns.
    Rocks: "Wonder Stone" (available on eBay).
    Substrate: Caribsea eco-complete Cichlid Specific (shells/coral).
    Heater: Eheim Jager 300watt submersible (taken out during summer months).
    Lighting: 48" T-5 on a timer.
    **135 Gallon Tank Breakdown**
    Filtration: Fluval FX 6 filled with sponges, Fluval ceramic rings, Seachem Purigen, ChemiPure Green and a SunSun 704B filled with "egg crate" pond sponges, CNZ bio balls, Pinky Floss, ChemiPure Green and Seachem Purigen. 704B UV is used a few days week.
    Heaters are two 300 watt Eheim Jagers connected to a controller from Jehmco.com, keeping things at 78 F degrees.
    Lighting 2 36" Beamswork LEDs and there are two SunSun Powerheads in there (dual adjustable head 1600 gph/800 gph per impeller).
    Substrate is Nature's Ocean Bio-Activ Live Aragonite "black" (looks more gray than black which is fine since it doesn't show every micro spec of detritus).
    Background and rocks are from Universal Rocks (use Jay Wilson's 15% discount code at check out!), along with some lava rock.
    ***
    Food: Mostly Northfin cichlid pellets 1 - 3mm, kelp wafers and Krill Gold (all available from NorthfinUSA or SuperCichlids). I also use Ken's Veg Sticks to help with digestion and provide some greens to the protomelas.

    Good points, Ben!
    I'd like to add a bit about fish death. When you buy grown, colored up fish, you never truly know how old the fish is. if you've had it for a couple years, it very well could have just died of old age.
    Keep the vids coming!

    I really love your tip videos. They keep me very grounded. On the topic of fish changing color... I have a yellow tail Mbuna and just taking him out of the tank when doing maintenance he goes almost completely white to where you would swear he was an albino. Sometimes it takes him a while to color back up when he's back in the tank. This is just the way fish act in order to protect themselves, or because of water conditions. Coming from a fish store is one of the most stressful things for a fish and most will color down... some for quite some time and depending on the tank it gets put into the change may be permanent because of the tank design or water conditions. I have never had a fish color down and not come back to at least 90% when he settles into his new inviorment. That said, this is just my opinion and everyone should judge their own situation individually. Thank you for all the great videos Ben.

    On plants, i found out that my peacocks love to bite & destroy java ferns. I have to remove the ferms torn pieces & also a whole leaf almost every day. I put anubias in my all-hap tank. They tend to bite anubias from time to time but they don't bite off the whole leaf. May be i should change to anubias for my peacocks tank.

    Hey Ben, I really enjoyed this video! Thursday is becoming one of my favorite days of the week because you have been very consistent with putting out videos, and I always enjoy watching them. Sometimes, I'm not sure if it is always fish lies, but it can sometimes be the ignorance of the hobbyists, and I don't mean that in a negative sense, but rather the hobbyists lack o research and experience. Anyways, my tank is finally getting moved over with me in my new residence Saturday morning. I really think your idea of doing that video you mentioned in a couple months is a great idea. I also think you doing a weekly Livestream is an awesome idea that would take your channel and hobby to incredible heights. Thanks very much for sharing

    Great video Ben. Regarding juiced fish, outside of the things you mentioned; I find substrate and lighting also play a role in fish coloring down. If the fish was on dark sand with excellent lights it could look washed out on white sand and a shop light.

    Hi Ben
    New to hobby and learning a lot from your vids.
    I thought I heard you say in the “substrate w Adam C” vid, that you had gray aragonite.
    I have not been able to find that online.
    What brand?
    Where can I find that?
    Thx

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  4 роки тому

      The substrate was: Nature's Ocean Bio-Activ Live Black Aragonite. It was called "black" but was actually gray. Adam C was using what I think was black and white mixed together giving him a gray overall look.

    Ben,
    Funny to hear you say that about the fish eating the plants. I have a Venustus that has eaten my Anubias to pieces but does not touch my Java Fern. So cool to see you have this happen as well because it is not talked about a lot on the internet. Another plant that might work great could be Jungle Val.

    The juice fish is a good explanation, I just recently purchased a pseudo from the LFS. It had a lot of blue in coloration. When I added to my tank I watched it color down as it fought for dominance with an more dominant pseudo.

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  6 років тому

      They will lose color if they are sub-dominant. They try to look invisible, not attract attention, to prevent getting beaten up.

    Not saying fish don't just tip over sometimes they do. For me they tend to struggle along for weeks or months first and I wish they would just give up. Sometimes I think I should keep more aggressive fish so they would put the old ones down as they get to old.

  • @marylanddahl
    @marylanddahl 6 років тому +1

    Great video. I see that some of the fish in the tank scratch their bodies. In other fish I had, that was a pretty bad symptom, for ick or white spot. Maybe the cichlids are stronger and resist the ick easier?

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  6 років тому

      The sometimes itch, sometimes mark territory and sometimes it's because they have parasites or the beginning of ich or some other disease. I keep an eye on it.
      I do think these fish are pretty hardy but the clown loaches, being a "scaleless" loach will show signs first, so I use them as an "early warning system", so if the cichlids are flashing (scratching) but the loaches look good, I don't worry too much.
