- A couple of years ago I experienced a hard lesson in how to provide oxygen to my fish.
Here I am a couple of years later, a little more experienced with a few tips that I hope can help you to avoid what I had to go through.

Hey fellow fish lover, you reading this right now ... YOU ROCK! - Домашні улюбленці та дикі тварини
This video should be a "required learning" video for anyone looking to get into the hobby...so many people don't know this very basic requirement that the surface of your water needs movement.
another great vid thanks ben!!!
great info Ben
Great advice, I have airstone now but had a lot of troubles before and I didn't know about all the symptoms of low oxygen, thanks!
I think many of us starting out believed that the airstone was putting oxygen in the water.
Great video Ben.
Some, even a few more "very" experienced aquarists, still do...
Hi Ben, your 150 gallon is awesome! I took the idea of the top and made it for my 150, thanks for the idea and great info
Awesome! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thank you! I got this video right as Im adding more air. I wasn't sure if my cichlids where needing more air but you differently confirmed it. I learn alot form you. My first cichlids tank and Im mostly going by what learn form your videos. Diffentely wanna give them the best. I feel I can now.
Thank you Brittny! No need for you to make the same mistakes I did and experience the fish fish loss. Good luck with your tank.
@@BenOchart I diffentely appreciated it and my fish diffentely thank you. Air filter was a good move.
It take time to learn but it is made easier with teachers to learn form.
There not alot of tank people on youtubes.
Thank you Ben great video full of good information 👍
Thank you George.
Awsomme video and information and me and my fish thank you!
I have a spray bar pointed upwards towards the surface of the tank, an HOB filter, sponge filter, and wave makers in my 55 gallon lol. Great reminder for newbies. Thanks Ben.
Your fish are breathing easily. Thanks for watching.
Always good info Ben ! Surface agitation is a must..
Tremendously valuable information, even for the heavily planted tank. I partially learned this lesson, myself, but now feel even better informed. Thank you!
I know that heavily planted tanks are eating up that CO2 and creating O2 from the plants, but is it enough to sustain a well stocked planted tank? I don't think you can go wrong with increasing O2, but planted tanks get CO2 added. I guess it's a balancing act. Thanks for stopping by Dannette.
@@BenOchart Indeed, the hobby teaches us it is a balancing act, between many moving parts. I do not inject CO2, but rather, rely on the natural gas exchange of a rippling surface and an air stone. Fish are happy and plants are thriving. Granted, I stick with the easy to moderate plants, but they grow like weeds! A lot to be said for plant supporting substrate and a good fertilizer.
Awesome info ...I love this Channel 👍🏼
Thank you 450, I appreciate the nice encouragement.
Good tips Ben. Great video.
Thanks Joe.
I run airstones in every tank, either in the tank itself or in the sump. Great info!
Very smart. More is better when it comes to O2.
I use one air pump with a splitter that has control valves between two tanks, I contributed this to saving my fish (goldfish). Oddly enough I use fish as live fish bait for other larger fish and use air stones to sustain them. It isn’t the fish that cause tribulation to me I believe that it’s when I realize the potential for personal failures. This is what is no fun to me, but yet very reward over the hurdle. This video validated my consensus!
Took your advise. I got a new canister filter, put my old filters away, but I had pretty much no surface motion anymore and my fish did seem to gasp a lot. I replaced my trusty Marineland HOB with just polyfloss to create a nice waterfall and I see a lot of improvement. Thanks
Awesome video Ben. Definitely a topic that is completely under-discussed.....is that a word? Enjoyed as always
Hey Adam! It's a word now! Thanks for stopping by.
Ok buddy thinks for the tip i lernd alot from your video thanks again
Yes. Warmer water equals less oxygen. My filters do break the waters' surface but last week I added airstones to help in those dead zones. I did put an airstone with my betta too but I have to keep the flow very slow and gentle or he will panic.
Temperature, salinity, and pressure all play a part in oxygen saturation levels. Pressure doesn’t really play into the aquarium equation for most of us I would think, but colder, fresher water is able to maintain higher oxygen saturation levels than warmer, saltier water due to the solubility of oxygen.
Really enjoyed this video as it had a lot of great information that beginner aquarists really need to know to provide the proper environment for their watery pets.
The way I break up surface tension in my 20/10 gallon tanks with an HOB filter I use, I added small clear tubing in an L shape configuration (tube size about 5/8 inch). On the L shaped tubing, the shorter part of the tube is positioned in front of the HOB filter outlet letting water in and being held up by suction cups under the top glass cover. The longer part of L shape tubing also being held up by suction cups and is facing towards the other end of the tank. It has drilled holes about few inches apart to drip water down and whatever water is left inside the tube just flows out the end tubing. Before I have seen that one end of my tanks when water was not being moved would have some water film on the surface of the tanks. After I added an L shaped water drip system that I made, my problem went away.
👍 great tips love vids 👍
Thanks Charlie!
Good video thanks 👊
Perfect informations, thank you a lot for this video! I added new fishes to my aquarium and they all died one by one. Old fishes i have in there are ok, only new ones was looking bad. I was testing water and everything looks good. But the new ones was at the top of the aquarium and heavily breathed. Today im going to fish store and buy oxygen stone to my aquarium. Really thank you. Wishing you all the best.
Let me know if the new one survives.
I like it Ben u are such an amaizing teacher, ty. 06:48
Very kind of you, thank you!
In my case I run a overflow system that runs into a sump. I have no oxygenation whatsoever in my tank and my returns run undergravel reversed through a undergravel filter. All of my oxygenation occurs in my Sump using for air Stones inside of the biomedia chamber it works pretty well
Great video buddy i use a airston i might be adding a power head
Watch the fish. As you add stock or as the fish get bigger the O2 needs increase. If you start to see them working their mouths 24/7, time to add more O2. Mine were showing signs of being on the edge a couple years ago and a minor drop in on (repositioning the canister outputs) dropped the O2 below the minimum needed and I had a die off. So, I suggest just keep an eye on them.
Great topic Ben! Unfortunately I experienced low oxygen and lost one of my yellow rainbows. 😔 I now have sponge filters running and my return is aimed at the surface to agitate it.
My oxygen lesson was much more devastating. It's a hard way to learn but we never forget and are better fish keepers afterwards. Sorry about your rainbow.
Things you only learn through trial and error... Thanks bro.....
Very important topic Ben, I must admit when I was a kid I thought it was the bubbles that was the air. Luckily for my Angel fish I had lots of air stones.
Now I have great breakage of surface tension ( 2 F 306 ), water polisher, bacteria, chemistry checks out the Jing Jang..LOL
Some have made a case for the bubbles exchanging CO2 - O2 as they travel up, adding O2 to the entire water column. You have it wired in your set-up.
Love your fish and set up. Ben I thought you had canister filters. Just a thought for new hobbyists. If you have glass tops crack your tops about a 1/2 inch locate air stones near the opening to exchange gases if tops are closed the purpose is defeated there should be some evaporation from time to time. Which is a good thing let’s you add fresh water to the system. Remember your aquarium becomes a living entity as it gets older. 20 percent water changes monthly adds minerals back to the system that fish and plants use up. Always add prime to chlorinated water. Yikes I ran over sorry Al😌
Good tip Alfred! I'm currently running 4 canisters. Two on the 60 gal, and FX6 on the 100 and a SunSun 704-B (mechanical only) on the 150.
Thanks for stopping by Alfred.
Hi Ben, there’s nothing like the oxygen that is produced by a sump or a pair of sponge filters in the tank. Another great video buddy 👍.
Thanks Denny!
Do you leave the powerheads on 24/7 or on a timer, so the fish can sleep more peaceful
I did a water change before leaving to go snowboarding for a weekend. I didn’t know my intake was stuffed with discarded krill shells and they weren’t getting oxygen. I lost 8 total, including some really nice adult OB’s. I bought the uv filter, which doubles as a surface agitator. They have also enjoyed frozen foods for the last time.
Ben can you help me out i have a 55in fishtank and its very cloudy I need help with advise what to do?
What kind of sickness if 2 fishes out of 15 cichlids in the same tank has opened wide and not closing for 2 days now. What could be the cause.
Ben my question is how come all your fish look good at the same time. All of mine look good sometimes but none of them look good all the time or rather they don't all look good at the same time. I got predators together peacocks together etc. Your thoughts?
Great question Scott. I have all males, so there isn't a female in there firing them up. I really don't know why, except maybe it related to my maintenance schedule and using hign-end food. But you're probably doing that too. I do have some fish, like the Malawi Trout, that have colored way down around bigger predators.
I would just like to add that smooth ripples from a lily pipe are not enough in my experience! You need some white water I think that shows that the surface is actually physically breaking. Also, bare in mind that plants will go from creating oxygen with the lights on to using oxygen with the lights off, I have an air stone on a timer at night, to complement the CO2 I add during the day, the requirements flip at night! I don't know why this isn't as talked about as the Nitrogen cycle when it comes to stocking, it seems to me that oxygen is just as pressing a bottle neck on stocking capacity.
Great points. Would love to see dissolved O2 measurements in a planted tank, day vs. night. Would be a good topic for a video.
I had a 10-gallon tank with 2 dwarf-gourami. The water was very cloudy and only had one filter. And a few days later, I lost that fish. is it because of oxygen or ammonia spike
Sounds like a bacterial bloom and likely was caused by Ammonia.
Hi Ben.
It's good to see you Sir.
How are you?
Awesome video. I think you have covered the points very well, many will certainly find it helpful.
Yes, I use an air curtain stone that goes from one end of the aquarium to the other and two wave makers, I also have my returns at the top of the aquarium, so there is a lot of tension break.
I also have my temperature set to 26.7 (which is 80.06 Fahrenheit) Degrees Celsius, plus I have a cooling fan which will automatically kick in encase the temperature rises to 26.8 (80.24) so it will not get to warm.
Have a great week my friend.
Take care.
UFS - you have it totally wired! I'm positive your fish are breathing effortlessly!
I have planted tank with filter and no air pump.. still my fish lingering near the surface of the water. I am facing this problem from many weeks now.. i tried changing position of filter but doesnt works. need suggestions please
What’s the temperature? If too warm oxygen will not dissolve in enough quantity. In the meantime consider adding an air stone or a small wave maker pointed toward the surface.
I must be your number one fan first comment. Nice video grate info thanks Ben👍😉😊
Thanks JMF!
Only 2 of my fish out of 6 are coming to the surface. Its a cold water tank and the filter is causing very small waves hardly noticeable. I'm a little worried , would an oxygen stone alone help?
Try it and see if you notice a change in behavior
Can a tank be over oxygenated?
Some people are running planted tanks with co2 and their reason why they don't want surface breakup is because they say they're losing too much co2 because of that...
Yes, I see very heavily planted tanks that are totally still and CO2 is being injected. I imagine if it was heavily planted and heavily stocked with fish one would have to find a balance.
Thanks for watching Aqua Peet!
I’m watching several videos trying to get the answer to my question considering too much oxygen. I’ve got a spitter in my little over 100 gallon pond that seems to be getting a lot of bubbles, but I wanted to add a solar powered aerator, just in case the power were to go out. Then I saw my paradise fish lingering close to the rocks very still and wondered if there can be too much oxygen. My goldfish are also down deep hanging out. It’s chilly but not cold. Just wondering if there can be too much oxygen? I thought I’d turn off the air raider for a little while until I get an answer From someone who knows more than I. Maybe the fish were just sleeping? I don’t even know if they do that. Thanks if you can answer this question. I really appreciate you
I never heard that too much oxygen could be an issue. Doesn't mean it can't be, just means that I've never heard of it being a problem. Fish can lay very still when resting or sleeping and water temp can impact activity level.
Only if your pond got very warm would I worry about O2, and that would be more of a too little, not too much, O2.
@@BenOchart thank you For answering I’m such an old video.
Hey Ben, there a several phenomenon going on in an aquarium that will affect the amount of available oxygen for our fish. Here are some that came to my mind:
- the oxygen exchange at the water-air surface
- you covered this well in your video
- the oxygen exchange from air bubblers
- the oxygen content of the water at any point in time
- the biological oxygen demand (from bacteria and the like)
See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biochemical_oxygen_demand
- the oxygen demand based on the number and size of fish in the tank
- oxygen levels in your fish room. (like near the air pump)
- oxygen levels in the water used in water changes. (think of Flint Michigan water problems)
- the chemical oxygen demand in tank water (aka COD). (from chemicals in the water not biological) From the various chemicals we use in cycling a tank for instance.
- temperature of the tank water. See the following (at 1 bar)
www.engineeringtoolbox.com/oxygen-solubility-water-d_841.html
- use of medications in the tank water (COD see above)
- the saturation of other soluble chemicals in the tank (both organic and inorganic)
This is an interesting article www.tfhmagazine.com/aquarium-basics/columns/aeration-and-oxygenation.htm
Also those of us well above sea level do not get the same level of oxygen in water. It decreases as you go to higher elevations. (Also is much higher at the dead sea, low elevation)
I guess enough oxygen helping to growing fishes and their colors m I right and I research when enough oxygen in water they activate more and they look happy and stress free even they bullying by other fish.... I telling u coz I have 125 gallon mixed Malawi tank I added there 2 spongefilters and my sump on continuesly and your aquarium is looking beautiful both way as like natural as well looking healthy thanks
Thank you for stopping by and yes, you can really tell a difference with the points you mentioned.
Cooler waters holds more oxygen.
Thats settled that , fish love to swim in a jet of bubles keeps em happy .
The fish have to chase the food a bit from the top but that settles it " test run "
shaun, that is true. Some just stay there, like a trip to the gym, and you can see the muscle development, LOL!

I have a spair powerhead set to the bottom of the tank with the inpella gard .
pumping currant along the bottom of the tank .
I have an air compresser pumping air through to the powerhead .
It is proventing infections too .
they love it !
Lol .... If someone was choking you .... That's Great ! Lol
My favorite people have a good sense of humor! Thank you B.A.
i cannot hear the audio..
try a spraybar
I think my wife needs oxygen because she's always opening her mouth.
LOL, add an airstone, LOL!
Yea mine too. I think i need to add a filter. lol
Love your videos, but I can never hear you.
I don't get it... I've played it on several devices and the volume seems fine. I'm sorry you're running into this. Is the vol. okay in my prior video (Rockstar Fish)? I ask because I used a different mic on that one.
Some are, I don't have a remote now. It's frustrating.
U too far from the Mic or you did not calibrate it.
Seriously Ben please get a damn microphone that works.
