I much prefer the regular wall connector and getting a J1772 adapter for the occasional non Tesla Evs. I see the Universal connector as an extra failure point, as you essentially have to plug in the NACS to the adapter every time you unplug…
You neglected to mention this one also supports power share so you will be able to run your home off from your Cybertruck if you get the other equipment required. Hurricane season is on the way. That is why I bought the universal wall connector.
Your correct and I wish I had watched this video a week ago.. I had my charger installed this morning and found out I should have bought the universal in order to powershare. My Cybertruck is still about a year or so out so I will get the universal later and sell this one.
Great video! Have you considered setting up power share between the two wall connectors? That would allow you to get the full 48a out of each charger in situations where only one car is plugged in, or one of the two cars is done charging without pulling too much power from your main panel. You could tell the chargers they are on a shared 100a breaker, which would be 80a continuous or 48a + 32a.
Instead of limiting the one charger to 32 amps, couldn't you instead utilize the Power Share feature that allows multiple Wall Connectors to be connected together and dynamically share power depending on what is available at the site and what is being requested from the vehicles? In older versions of the Gen 3 manual I think you had to physically wire the Wall Connectors together; however, in the most recent version it seems to indicate that a future OTA update will allow this to be done wirelessly.
sure I could, but this allows me more flexibility when testing other chargers. My 32 amp charger is hooked up to a 14-50 which I use to test other chargers.
Or vice versa, but then you need to deal with the multiple manual adapters. This is more elegant and worth it for $120 more, less when it's on sale on Amazon.
The NACS Tesla charger has some security features to lock it down to only certain Tesla's, does the J1772 model have anything like that to prevent non-authorized J1772 cars from charging?
Nice video! Can you elaborate more about the locking system? Coz for normal wall connector, we have to have the phone key nearby to unplug the charger from the Tesla vehicle. But there is no locking feature for non-Tesla vehicle, people can just unplug the charger from the car. For this universal wall connector with the J1772 adapter on and plugged to a non-Tesla, I believe anyone can still unplug the charger (NACS+J1772 adapter) from the car. BUT how about the adapter itself? Is the J1772 adapter still locked to the NACS end? And we need to plug it back to the connector to unplug the adapter? Please tell us more and show us. We don't want that adapter to be stolen, appreciated!!!
Love your show! I agree GEN3UWC is worth the upgrade for the Magic Dock feature…but it also has added hardware for future bi-directional charging capability with Cybertruck. Regular GEN3 does not do this. Makes the added cost SUPER AWESOME!
Hey BTG, this is great info. Now, just curious if your local power company is offering charging solutions for flat rates… I’m also in Florida (Broward) and recently signed up for the FPL Power Evolution plan which installed a wall box charger (40A max), for unlimited charging during off peak hours (10am to 6pm and 10pm to 6am) for only 30 usd x month. We have 2 teslas and TBH I can’t think of a better deal than that. Again, just wanted to share, but sure if where you live, this is available, but I think power companies will start doing this in more places.
Great video! I have a question that maybe you could help answer. I have had my Universal Wall Connector for a month but haven't installed it yet, because I need to have it live inside a lockable wall box. But all the boxes I have found so far are built for the regular Gen 3 wall connector, and I'm not sure there would be enough clearance to pull the new universale handle out with the adapter connected, given the significant added length. Would you be able to hold something upright (like a 2x4) next to the unit, on the right side, and let me know what is the minimum distance that allows pulling out the plug + J1772 without cursing or skinning your knuckles everyday? Would be super helpful to know the minimum distance/clearance for both chargers and how they compare. Thanks for considering! 🤞🤞
Isnt the new connector capable of restricting which cars can use it? So you can have it outside with no risk of some stranger charging their car without your authorization?
Another future proof is the Universal Wall Connector mentions powershare for vehicle to household. Would the standard Gen3 WC be able to do that via a software update in the future?
Great video on a new product. In addition to my model 3, i have an Nissan Ariya. Am considering buying this as I plan on keeping both car for awhile. Did you get a chance to test the new software which Tesla said coming in late 2023? I also recently installed solar on the roof and charge the Tesla during the day. I can charge up to 25 amps on a sunny day. Enphase recently came out with a charge that foes with my solar and the software is suppose to manage the sun to car charging.
BTG, does this new WC have software to support multiple users at a HOA or condo complex for direct billing to an EV driver? There are very few brands with this capability. But know Juicebox Pro can do it, albeit priced much higher
Are the wire boxes the same between the standard wall connector and universal wall connector? I.e. if I have an existing wall connector can I just remove it and replace it with the universal one but still use the same wire box?
Can you adjust the amperage on the universal type as I have a Ford lightning and it doesn't allow adjustments to charging amperage through the truck so it would need to be done through the charger
Thanks for your excellent guide. Can you install wall charger by yourself? Doesn't it require activation by a licensed electrician? Thank you for your answer in advance.
@JasonKrasavage Thank you for your reply. I was initially confused by the Tesla wall charger commissioning guide, but I figured it out and installed it by myself. It is now charging at 40 Ampere and beats handsomely 16 Ampere charge rate using a mobile charger on a 16-20 outlet.
would be a good idea so that you are future proofing your charging setup. Even Fords will ship with NACS in a couple years and you would have one of the best wall connectors on the market for reliability from the start.
@BeardedTeslaGuy ya they will start 2025 I think with nacs My biggest problem is if I get it I have to get military housing to leme get it installed x.x
it took months. It turns out that they had a big deal with Hilton and shipped all of those before starting to fulfill customer orders. They started shipping these to customers about 1 month ago.
Good to know! I initially placed my order last August with Tesla directly but they wanted payment up front with shipment not until late October, which is why I changed my order to Best Buy. I will just be patient!
Specifically if you are going to do just one charger, the Universal charger would be more robust for both forms unless it's never going to be used for 1772. No adapter getting lost is nice too
I am having a glitch with this where I have to plug in the j1772 adapter twice in order for it to work. Anyone else having same issue?? I have to plug in j1772…unplug…replug then it works. If I don’t it doesn’t work.
Why exactly would you want a wall connector if you’re only charging one EV and 32a or less? You can buy two mobile connectors for less than one wall connector
The mobile charger by itself is cheaper for sure, but you have to add the cost of installing a heavy duty NEMA 14-50 outlet, which could tip the overall cost in the other direction.
@@keetonkatt4621 the cost of installing a 14-50 vs hardwiring is really just a matter of the cost of the plugs. Wires would be the same or cheaper and labor of an electrician would be about the same. And the mobile connector comes with the 14-50 adapter.
@@johnpoldo8817 I feel that’s more of an opinion than a fact. Sure, IF you’re unplugging it often, you’ll want a higher quality outlet, but I’ve used just the cheap outlets and they’ve been fine. Granted, it is a 14-30 and maxes at 24a, and the 14-50 is exactly the same as the 14-30 aside from the neutral pin so maybe if you actually run it to 40a continuously, you could see some benefit in the higher grade outlets, but I highly doubt that the 32A mobile connector would fry any outlet built to code. You don’t even need that conductor mass to pull 50a 240v, the 6-50 has a much smaller L2/neutral pin vs all other 30a and up connectors. The big factor is how frequently you unplug it. I probably unplugged my first receptacle 6 times in the 2 years I had it, and only replaced it because of the bizarre wiring situation I have and it was easier to switch to a surface mount outlet to get the ground facing up
I much prefer the regular wall connector and getting a J1772 adapter for the occasional non Tesla Evs.

The universal will be great for all your used cars in the future since all the manufacturers are going NACS!😂
yea, it will be useful for well over 10 years in my opinion
I have two NACS Gen 3 wall connectors , with an $100 adapter from Lectron, it also chargers my F-150 fine.
Do you have the two Gen 3 on the same circuit sharing power load or each has a dedicated circuit for concurrent 48amp charge?
One 60a circuit shares across both chargers.
VTG from CT is the selling point for me
Great video! Have you considered setting up power share between the two wall connectors? Yea I’ve considered, but don’t need it as is right now
Good video. My UWC charges at 48A with 50A breaker and 6awg wiring.
Need a 60 amp breaker

I was thinking the same thing. I plan on wiring my new universal wall connector to share 60a with my current nacs only gen 3 wall connector.
If I have the regular Tesla wall charger, can't I just buy an adapter for J1772 to connect to a non tesla vehicle?
Yes

you can lock these down, but honestly, there are other chargers on the market (Autel comes to mind) that are more suited for authorized usage.

No, the terminals that accept the universal body are not in the same location, or same thickness as the standard wall connector.

Can you adjust the amperage on the universal type as I have a Ford lightning and it doesn't allow adjustments to charging amperage through the truck so it would need to be done through the charger
This looks like a cumbersome design. Wish Tesla would make a J1772 OEM adapter for $50 for when family visits….
So true a cheap adapter does the same thing
Yes, that’s all you need is a good quality adapter. The Big J1772 just looks hard to use, unless you own a nontesla vehicle and I’m all in.

can you charge both wall connectors at max 48 amps at the same time? ie. 2 tesla charging at the same time...will the speed be nax on both cars?
Spiffy
I been thinking about getting that for my mach e gt

Will that Green Light on the front of the Tesla Wall Charger always stay on?
Until it’s charged, then it turns blue. When not in use, it’s solid green
@BeardedTeslaGuy Thank You bro
So which one is better. I got a Tesla should I get the Tesla or universal charger. I do want to help others but can’t they get a reverse adapter
Universal connector is a Tesla charger too. I’d go that route if you have anyone that has a CCS vehicle in your circle

Heading to the Tesla Store in Charlotte NC/Mathews. They have a Cybertruck on display.
Hello, How long is the charging WIRE on the Universal charger
24 feet
if you have a 14-50A Nema outlet, Can you use the existing wire to get to this Tesla Wall Connector?
sure can. The wall connector will automatically set its limit based on the existing breaker powering that run.
