Last time I went to Japan I ran into a group of these people. Nothing but respect for our culture and our people. I spent almost that whole day teaching them some Spanish and some stuff about Chicano culture. I ain't mad about them doing this, if anything its an honor with how respectful they are.

I'm Chicano. East Los. Great points. Being Chicano is the way you think and the way you live your life. Being Chicano is to be able to be proud of both cultures. Switching from English to Spanish in the same sentence. Enjoying the best of both worlds. Experiencing the culture, food, raza, familia, barbecues, Church, working hard, struggle, never giving up. Chicanismo is keeping your word, helping others and never forgetting where you came from. I Enjoy all your videos. Keep them coming. Thanks

Nice vid, makes me think of the kids here in Texas who walk around acting and dressing like they are Mexican rancheros listening to narco corridos while me and my parents fled Mexico to escape the FN narco violence. I get it though, to them it's a foreign concept and it peeks their interest but sadly take no time to realize that the narcos they idolize in narco corridos Is the the reason their parents left their home country.

But Chicano culture isn't all crime dude. Read up on the history of Mecha and the Raza Unida Party. The Chicano slang is actually CALO and it was built on adding more Nahuatl /otomi influence on it. Go listen to CAFE TACUBAS chilanga banda . Orale, Qvole, Chota , are Calo terms from Nahuatl(Aztec). Funny that when Maya***s jocked our style, lowridrs and lingo in the 90s , the g ingos glorified them but with us they ridiculed us. Anything that is positive for Mexicans like Cafe Tacuba, Art and Agriculture they ignore and dont say shi*,
but when its to do with negative stuff like Narcos then they love to bring out about us. is their hipocriticale evangelical( thee elect) nature.
It's only been until recently with hipsters in LA that our Chicano Art and food got appreciated.
So no, I can't compare Chicano Culture to Narco culture. Yes there was some dumb stuff that is in Chicano culture like the violence and pinta bs , but all sub cultures have this too.. if you thikn about it.
Wall Street Culture ( Wolf of Wall Street LARPS) have criminals.. .BERNIE MAYDOFF who ran away with your parents 401 K money and they don't say shi*. Neo Con culture, had criminals like Kissinger who caused wars in Chile , and they don't say shi*.

Hi, Tino, I live in central California, where I see some people embrace the Japanese culture. They learn the language in high school, learn how to cook home-made Japanese food and visit Japan. When they return to Cali, they remodel their entire home inside and out to look like a "typical" Japanese house with a Japanese garden, tatami flooring, restroom with a bidet and a deep bathtub. They know more Japanese than I do and I'm full-blooded. Whoo!

I think the mutual respect is something we all need to be able to see first and foremost before passing judgement...know what I mean?
I thought it was strange AF seeing so many people just change everything about themselves when I first came out here... and I remember just getting angry at times. "What the heck have you people done with your true identities!?" But as time went on... I was able to see the love and respect they had for other cultures and it became something totally different. Now I understand.

Right on homie holding it down on the other side. Real talk. Thanks clarifying to those that don’t know the nuances and differences Chicano.... cholo..... etc. I can’t hate on others digging foreign cultures and concepts. So I don’t want to be preachy to them. When I grew up outside the neighborhoods, born and raised Downtown, it was not always looked at as a cool thing and sometimes looked down upon. Inside the neighborhood we did not ask for permission or solicit input from outsiders.
The culture has deep root and some of that style came wirh pain. For example, old Pachucos back in the day were hunted down at times. there can be lot of deep meaning behind wirh this. For some it really cost. So as long as it’s treated with respect I don’t personally have a problem and am actually taken back by it.

It's everyone's job to spread the truth about their culture, so that the people in love with it, understand it better, and hopefully develop an even stronger appreciation for it. I would hope that the Japanese traveling abroad would teach their new friends who love Japan in other countries, about true Japanese culture. It's not all anime and J-pop, and it's not all bushido and sushi. It's sad though, because a lot of the teenagers in Japan don't understand their own culture, because they are so busy trying to imitate other cultures... But yeah, I think they really are trying to understand what it is to be Chicano, and given the correct information from you and others, they will appreciate it even more.

So true, brother. One of the first things I let my students and their parents know is... English is a tool that they are going to use to share their culture with the world. Getting from others is easy... It's almost effortless in a way. You just sit in a chosen environment and just soak everything up.
I think the most difficult thing about teaching here is letting my students know that they got to put in work in order for this global thing to work.
      Thanks always, brother.

Nothing wrong about loving or wanting to learn about a foreign culture. In the same way Japanese culture is what it is because of their admiration towards ancient Chinese culture, Chicanos are a great mixture of northern Mexican, Native western-american and American? (call it Anglo-saxon, etc.) cultures. In the same way you are a Mexican Samurai, they want to be (and CAN be) Samurai-chinanos. Who knows if in a few years time, they will give birth to a culture that will help unite Mexico and Japan in a way nobody could have ever imagined? I'm always try to be optimistic about any of these cultural trends. ¡Saludos Tino desde Fukuoka!

I wonder, as a Chicano. Do you think they would glamorize it if they knew the struggle we have to succeed, the pressure we have to succeed since our parents our immigrants? The struggle with gangs giving people a strange sense of comfort? The racism by our own people because some don’t know Spanish or how some are not fully accepted by Mexican cultures but still not treated like Americans because we still look “brown”? We should inform them on everything. It’s not just low riders, tattoos, and bandanas, that’s why it’s called culture. There is generations of struggle, there are customs, things we as a people relate to. They could try to relate, if they find our culture fascinating so be it. As long as they are respectful.

Chicano culture can only be summed up by Lord Cuauhtemoc’s mandate ..
    CUAUHTEMOC’S MANDATE
Our beloved sun has disappeared and has left us in total darkness. But we know that it will again return, will again come out and will come anew to shine upon us. But while it stays there in Miktlan (region of eternal repose.) We should rapidly gather and embrace ourselves. And in the center of our heart we will hide all that which our heart appreciates and considers a treasure. And we know like a great jade we will destroy our Teokalwanzintli (houses of youth), our Kalmekawanzintli (Universities), our tlachkowanzintli (ball courts), our telpochkalwanzintli (houses of young men), and our kwikakalwanzintli (houses of song.) That our roads may remain deserted and that our homes may preserve us. For now we do not know until when our new sun will come out. That the fathers and the mothers may never forget to teach their children. The fathers with the boys, the mothers with the girls. And that they teach their children while they live precisely how good has been that which has been until today. Our beloved Anawak! The refuge, the protection and the care of our energies. And as a result of our customs and the behavior that our venerable elders received and our venerable parents with effort sowed in our essence. Now we deliver the task to our children that they guard our writings and our knowledge. From now on our homes will be our teokalwanzintli, our Kalmekawanzintli, our Tlachkowanzintli, our telpochkalwanzintli, our kwikalwanzintli. And do not forget to inform our children intensely how it will be. How we will rise! And exactly how its destiny will be realized and how it will fulfill its grand destiny. Our beloved motherland Anawak

Be aware…, stick to the teachings of those before us, pass on knowledge and be accountable…make it essential that our young ones ready themselves to pass on the teachings they are receiving now with the same conviction in their hearts.
      Yes. 🙏🏽

You can’t be Mexican samurai… but japanese will honor your desire if you wanted to be seen as such. The japanese see people repping their culture in the USA and they are so appreciative of it even tho over here we hollering appropriation. Which a lot of it really is because it’s not honoring. They aren’t like living in it daily. Just throwing on a kimono or watching anime or getting a kanji tat… these people are really immersed in their limited understanding of Chicano culture. lol there could be arguments made that what you have on your back wall is cultural appropriation. I look at it as appreciation. If most of the actions are honoring the culture and it better your life for it… can we call that a bad thing? One japanese girl in the chicano scene said that chicano culture taught her to respect and honor her family even more. I think a group of OG and young chicanos should start an online group with the japanese in the Chicano scene and become friends like penpals. Educate them and maybe one day they visit Japan and vice versa. That would be the most wholesome amazing documentary and I would watch the hell outta it! May the spirit of Chicano and culture live forever.
