The source material is more consistant in its usage. A contract is what sprit and contractors have. A covenant is a contract that’s inherited through the generations, such as the one between the Divine Dragon and the Royal family. A vow is simply a formal promise. And then there’s the fact that promises themselves are much more culturally important than in Japan. Breaking even a minor promise will likely strain a relationship a lot more in the Re: Zero world than on Earth. This likely due to the magical significance of promises, especially in regards to binding contracts. Spirits are revered pretty much everywhere, so the absolute promises that make up spirit contracts probably had a knock on cultural effect in regards to promises in general.
Roswall want Ram to end him, this is her only role in his plans, as if to atone for whatever evil his has done for his goal he will let one of his victms decide his fate after everything is over, that is why she is his hope, the hope she will make him pay for his sins
Roswaal even trained Ram in the use of torture for this very reason too. It's a bit sad that not only is Roswaal explicitly suicidal at his goals end, but wants his death to be truly horrific and his soul to burn in the fires of hell after. It's so interesting to see a villain who has such a strong sense of justice and genuinely wants justice done upon them. A man with a good and kind soul (which is what Ram was able to notice and fall in love with. Not actually Stockholm syndrome like many people think.) that commits truly evils deeds because of a broken heart at the loss of his family. Roswaal really does feel like a foil for Subaru, representing just how far a person can fall. If Subaru should lose Emilia, there's a strong chance he ends up like Roswaal.
Yeah Roswaal’s use of magic here was the coolest show of the power system in rezero from a top tier mage, really wished the anime did a better job adapting it, but there’s obvious animation budget, runtime/time constraints they’re working with. This fight is what definitely hooked me on the rezero power system originally.
Him being this strong and yet always getting in the way of Emilia faction so far is such a troll writing by Tappei🗿🗿
