I read this story a year before my health took a downward turn 3 years ago and ended up being a double leg amputee. The year before, my wife experienced a miscarriage. While not easy road to go down, this story meant the world to me. God has given us grace that we are unable to describe. I cannot imagine the grief this poor man went through. Such an inspiration. I have nothing to complain about. God is good. Beautiful job on one of my favorite hymns.
I have sung this song so many times in church and never knew this story. As soon as you said all 4 of their girls had died, my eyes just filled with tears. This will defiantly make me look at this differently.
I started in ministry as a choir director (minister of music/worship arts). This was the most powerful devotional story to share from any school of worship. Never a dry eye in 20 years (even during the Worship Wars). Thank you!
Excited to see this video so soon after our discussion about it in the stream yesterday. Also glad you included the third verse that gets skipped so much. Powerful song, powerful story. Thanks!
Hello Chris - we sang this an abridged version of this hymn at my church back in the spring. I enjoyed the composition but knowing the history of these words make it so much more powerful. Thank you so much for sharing. God Bless ❤️
Hey Mr. Chris, it makes me so happy that you made this video. I’m a college student, but back in high school, my concert band played a song called “On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss” which is a variation of Horacio Spafford’s original song. It is a beautiful concert piece that I recommend you listen to, but when we got the sheet music to it, I spent hours researching Spafford’s tragic story. It was so much more meaningful and powerful to understand what that song actually meant. Thanks for always producing such great content and reminding us how valuable family is.
I just did a lesson on this story with my music students. We lost two students to a terrible car accident and everybody is so heartbroken. I have known the story for a long time but it’s so poignant when you listen to it during a time of such sadness. What a great lesson for all of us. As a vocal teacher- you have a beautiful and steady voice ❤
The Spafford story has a fascinating epilogue. The Spaffords were to have three more children, and they all moved to Jerusalem in 1881 where the Spaffords engaged in charity work under the auspices of the American Colony. One of the three children, a daughter Bertha, ended up living in Jerusalem most of her life and even wrote an article in the December 1964 edition of National Geographic which was semi autobiographical in nature. I'm not sure if Bertha Spafford Venter lived to see the Six Day War, but even if she didn't, this fascinating woman, the daughter of the writer of this famous hymn, was an eye witness to history. The Spaffords continued to be blessed materially as well and I understand their descendents have decent land holdings in Jerusalem today. These days the American Colony is a hotel.
Amen, it is well with my soul. My wife's niece just suffered a miscarriage and is just through her and her family's faith that they can face their sorrow. God be with you my brother. Keep the faith. Thank you.
As a Christian Catholic, this song always bring me immense comfort. I grew up Wesleyan and heard this song often in Church, and it sticks with me. I often have struggled with depression and anxiety, but this song reminds that Christ is there for me and that it is well with my soul. Thank you God for never giving up on me, and I will continue to serve you and your church forever.
Speaking of hymns, you should do a video/cover of "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms." I'm not religious but it's one of my favorite hymns of all time, especially the version done by Iris Dement (which I highly recommend listening to).
I’m an atheist but even I really can appreciate stories like this. I just love how my man was able to make something good out of a situation so tragic.
Hey Chris, have you watched The Chosen? It's a multi-season show about the life of Christ. Would love to see you react to episodes or scenes from it as an ordained minister.
It is Impossible to imagine how a beautifully peaceful song such as this can have such a tragic background. I got goosebumps. Thank you, brother.

This channel should definitely have your music covers along with the history vlogs, absolutely beautiful.
I just want to say beautiful video, and I love your rendition of the song.
One of my favorites. Brings tears always. Thanks for your well-studied and well-crafted channels and content.
This song has had helped me through many difficult times. I can rarely listen to it with dry eyes. Thank you
Excellent video.
I’m constantly blown away by you, Chris.
I love this hymn as well. Thank you so much for the backstory behind it. You are a blessing Chris.

I e always heard this sing like a funeral dirge. Your version is so much more in line with the message. Thank you.
Nicely played and sung. It may surprise some people how often that tragedy leads to powerful music.
Our men’s choir sang this for a college senior project! Such an amazing song
God bless you, good sir.
That is a beautiful story and a beautiful song

Hi Brother, I am curious to know: how does a Methodist, a believer in what John Wesley taught turn out to be a Catholic?
So easy to forget how dangerous the sea is. Such a sad story.
The third verse of this song makes me weep with gratitude.
You need to do more of this I love it
Great song 🎵
loved this ideo. maybe if you have timyou could do more "history behind the hyn" videos. so many of them have very deep stories, such as Amazing grace
Thank God you are worthy

VTH coming with the best vocals
Nothing beats Guy Penrod and David Phelps singing this song with the Gaither Vocal Band.

Hi Cris, do you happen to have videos of your preaching/sermons online? I want to learn the Word of God from you! thanks

The Lord givith and takith away
If you have a chance, look up an arrangement for Symphonic Band by David Holsinger (Lee University) called “On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss.”

Very sad story. However, the song (While performed well) just didn't get to me at all.
