If there are some complicated angles or hair you can get the fine details using the smudge tool on the mask. Creates a natural looking effect.

How about adding a transparent layer set at darken blend mode and use a brush with eye dropper set at the nearby background color. The white fringe should disappear.

That can become very tedious and time-consuming. Especially if the background is not a solid color and you have to keep sampling the new color.
